I am considering being a miner. What ship would you guys recommend as I am just a noob on the tutorials at the moment? Would like a big cargo bay, but not a sitting duck either :D
thanks in advance

i'm playing the game now since 3 month, and i never asked that... check http://www.eve-online.com/itemdatabase/ and then you will get your answer.
look that you learn the skills for a mining barge (1.Astrogeology III,Science IV,Mining IV and 2.Industry V), is the best for miners. at the beginning, look that you get a frigate with the greatest hull and with alot highslots for the mining lasers... but like i said, i think it's logical hope u don't hate me now --*--*--*--*--

Your initial goal should be an osprey for Caldari, a vexor or thorax for Gallente, a scythe for Minmatar, and an omen for Amarr.
You should set your sights on a hauler to use with that miner--badger mk2 for Caldari, iteron mkIII for Gallente, hoarder for Minmatar, and bestower for Amarr.
With a cruiser and an indy, you'll mine damn fast. - Proud member of the [23].

It depends on what races and ships you can fly. Good mining ship for fairly new players are Osprey (caldari cruiser) and Scythe (minmatar crusier).
If you want to become a serious miner in the future you will want a mining barge and perhaps a Dominix (gallante battleship) or Apocalypse (amarr battleship).

There is always a frigate for your first mining ship, if you are Gallente then it is the Imicus. Look at all the frigates and see which one gives you a bonus to mining laser use, thats the one to start with.
This worked for me until I wanted to leave .9/1.0 space. Once you start going to .8 and .7 systems you need to defend yourself from the NPC pirates and if you have 2 mining lasers on the Imicus you have no means to defend yourself. I did not want to jump up to crusier. A good crusier like the thorax requires frigate 4 and crusier 3 I think and I did not want to wait for those skills to train. The crusier also costs a few million. I decided to try a destroyer, easy to train and cost under a million. I now have a catalyst with 3 mining lasers and 4 125mm railguns. I also have enough room for one mining drone and one light combat drone. With my mining bonues I am getting about 160 units per minute and I can easily handle the low level pirates in .8/.7 space.
I plan to use the destroyer to mine while I train up my skills for crusier and the equipment needed for it. With school and a fulltime job I found I can mine easily while studing and I only have to look up from my books when pirates spawn or I have filled a container and need to go get my Iteron to empty it, about every 25 minutes or so.
Once I have some better skills and can afford a nice crusier I plan to buy one and start mining in .5 space for Omber. I've only been playing about 3 weeks but this is my plan. Hope it helps.

Each race has a frigate that's suitable for mining - for the Caldari it's the Bantam, for the Amarr it's the Tormentor, and for the Minmatar it is the Probe. Each of them has two gun mounts that can be used for mining lasers, and failry roomy cargo bays (at least, as frigates go) that can be made larger still with expanders in the low slots. While it's tempting to use the drone bay space for mining drones, you'll usually be better packing a couple of scout drones for defense - unless you're staying in 0.9-1.0 space.
The Mining Guide section of the New Player Guide will be helpful for you here.
