this has been quite a big story recently, and i was just wondering what you guys feelings on that matter would be.
more importantly, would anything like be included in eve in any kind of future, and would you think it would be worth it for the cutting down on cheating/macroing? --

Theoretically, anything that can happen has, is, and will happen. So the answer is yes. In *our* future? I'm not sure, but I would not be opposed to some sort of program that makes sure people arent using 3rd part programs etc,

My invasion of privacy is exactly why I dumped a year's worth of work in WOW and came to play Eve about 5 months ago.
That warden client is extremely invasive. It goes beyond merely looking for 3rd party programs.
I understand the premise but there is a line and Blizzard has crossed it. ItÆs like saying we want to secure the world from bad people so every time you enter your house, car, shop or job you will be subject to a strip search and all contents cataloged.
No thanks.
And before you say IÆm over reacting.. take the time to really learn what the warden client does for yourself.
If this is the direction online games are going I guess that will finally cure me of playing them. And if CCP or anyone else is going to start down this road too then I guess IÆm done here as well.
I support getting rid of cheaters in the games I play.. but IÆm not willing to sacrifice my privacy to do so.

In my opinion you are a carebear of RL. And comparing some mindless program that scans a bunch of 0's and 1's on your computer to a more than daily strip-search IS over reacting. ---

When those 1 and 0's are, my bank account details, personal emails, my companies financial details etc etc...
No, I wouldnt say thats over reacting.

No, I wouldnt say thats over reacting.
Technically Blizzard would already have your credit card details so there wouldnt be all that much use for your bank account number. ------------------

Lets do a little equation...
Eve - everything great about it = WoW
Would we really want to trust something that gets splattered all over the news and put in to WoW? Their Devs thought of everything except how to make a good game. Why should we let out "security" be thought of by them? Besides that, knowing a few hackers (computer, not in-game... they're VERY against smacktards) myself, I know they enjoy going after large, public icons.
If CCP is gonna do it, they 1) Need to keep quiet about it 2) Need to make every player download it to their computer 3) Make it so Eve won't launch unless this program has been installed 4) Make sure it doesn't screw up as much a PunkBuster did...
As stated before me about Punk Buster... I've seen many a MP-FPS go up in smoke because of that damn prog...

Edited by: Karnas on 31/10/2005 23:09:15 I don't have a problem with how Blizzard is using WoW Warden right now. It is obviously designed to look for very specific things related to WoW gameplay / macroing / cheating, and it's goal is to improve the integrity of the game. Such efforts are to be lauded.
However, I do have a concern about what may happen in the future if nobody challenges this. Assuming a company like Blizzard can require you to allow their "game specific spyware to ensure game integrity". They control what it does, not you - and such power can be abused. I don't think Blizzard IS abusing it, but if not them, then the next game company that comes along also has it farming your email addresses in your address book, or bank account numbers, or anything else on your pc that is totally unrelated to their game?
Security and privacy concerns are very real. In short I like what they are doing and why they are doing it. I'm nervous about what may be done with this kind of game integrity spyware in the future with Blizzard or any other game company - because it is human nature that someone ALWAYS pushes the boundary. |

Eve is a dumb client which has some fairly nice protections against the typical memory hack /lag dupe bugs in any case. Macroing is not something which can be reliably detected by this kind of program, even WITH blatent privacy violations.
A social/GM soloution is what, if anything, will be effective against Macro Miners.
Kurren, incidentally, you cannot legally keep this kind of program quiet either if you run it. otherwise you ARE breaking the law.
