OK.. I admit this is a total newbie question. But I have searched the forumns and found no answer yet...
I now finally have a bc with big guns that snipe really far with good power... but everytime a rat gets in close.. I can't hit him to save my life (or my ship). What am I doing wrong... why do my Heavy Beam Lasers miss the target altogether when it's too close?
(yes I know I just answered it - too close)
But how do I fix it?
Thanks. |

Use an AB and keep at range, Or deploy drones.
Minimum effective range is Optimal - Falloff (I think) ------- Bringer of Squirrelly Wrath - Foaminian Card Cult

Had the same prob. with my moa.
Get a AB or MWD to keep your range or put a close range weapon on your ship If youve got a drone bay use it, they help up close and personal. You could also use a web and slow them down so you can make range...

I'm a newb, too, but I'll try.
Make a good use of "orbiting," or "keep at range." Maybe use some drones they're quit effective when there's a swarm of them. Maybe use smaller guns. Mix it a little bit. Having big guns has draw backs. Once the target passes that accuracy fall off, hitting them is hard. I learned this the hard way. Smaller guns are like your safety. They might not be able to hit targets far away but they can shoot those fast targets.

No, Falloff is a measure of how far beyond the optimal you can hit. At Optimal + Falloff you have 50% chance of getting a hit.
The reason the OP cannot hit the rats when they get close is that Heavy Beams have poor tracking, to counter this you need to keep the transversal velocity low, you can either do this by using the 'keep at range' option and sniping, or, if the rats are faster than you can fit a webifier. Check out the tracking guide for more info. Drones are also a big help, particularly against fast orbiting frigates,

Thanks for the quick reply. I can't beleive so many people viewed this post in such a short time...
I was thinking drones... thanks for confirming... But the idea of "keeping distance" makes me feel like I'm running from the battle... And that disturbs me. I guess I'll use a combo of the web thingy and some attack drones.
Thanks again. |

With Battlecruisers and above its a good idea to align to a warpable object so you can get out quick since they take a long time to get to warp, time you may not have if you start taking heavy damage.
If you are going to get in close you could look at heavy pulse lasers rather than heavy beam lasers (they take less cpu/pg too iirc). In each turret group there is a long range and short range version, pulse lasers, blasters and auto-cannons are all short range, good tracking turrets; heavy lasers, railguns and artillery are longer range but have poorer tracking.

Beat me to it. Even with the tracking guide the "optimal-falloff rule" seems to be a painful misconception - Proud member of the [23].

Get a good web, a 90% web (which will only set you back 5-6m) will allow you to hit mostly everything. Only thing you might have a problem with are the 5km/s spider drones.
Note that for webs the % effectiveness is everything, a 90% web is double as good as an 80%.

u could also try putting on tracking enhancers and computers, but your best bet is to use pulses close range as they have superior tracking

Had the same problem with a Moa equipped with 3x250 rails and 2xheavies. Decided to fill the last high slot with a 125 rail and some antimatter ammo. Punches holes in drones pretty quick and combined with missle area effect damage, gets me out of a few malfuntioning drone destroy missions. Let's face it, in an average kitted Moa/BC for missions, you won't outrun fast drones anyways.

Something I've always found useful that I didn't see mentioned here was to add "Transversal Velocity" to the overview. Anymore, I use that quite a bit when trying to hit frigs/cruisers w/ a 425 rail. The lower that number, the better you're chance to hit... *relatively* irregardless of their range.

If you right click on any of your weapons in space, it will give you the optimal distance, try and keep the bad guys there.
Also, the tactcal overlay is your friend. Turn it on, and mouse over each weapon, the optimal range is between the 2 inner spheres.
Also, IMHO, SMART BOMBS FTW! When they get close.

smartbombs are good if u have cap to spare......otherwise they eat it like no tomorrow...but they rule against drones so if ur doin a drone mission, especially the higher level ones......consider smartbombs. I put a large thermal onto my apoc once for a lvl3 drone mission...as soon as i warp in, im surrounded by 3 drones at 2km. CLICK smartbomb on. BOOM all drones explode at once that was cool, believe me -----------------------------------------------
