I have been mining in .5 and above space and sometimes I get overwhelmed in my destroyer from the rats. I need to be able to fight off the rats better in .5 space. I am almost ready to buy my first crusier to mine with and wonder which one and what setup your using?
I know the Thorax is the choice for fighting but is it the best choice for mining in low-sec space as well? With a Vexor I could get 3 level-2 miners and one med rail gun plus lots of drones and it has great cargo space. The Celestis has a lot of CPU and I could use the missles to fend off the rats. What are you using?

Use a thorax with 5 miner 2's and a mix of mining and combat drones, or a vexor with miner 2's and mining drones with some combat drones in reserve.

I was able to fit my Thorax with 5 miner 2, 1600 plate + repairer, hardners and a webber. With the giant drone bay you can launch heavy or medium drones for combat only or have 2 waves 1 mining drone wave and a 2nd wave of light drones.
Really neat little ship, I was amazed at all the stuff I could fit coming from minmatar ships lol.
Train up Cruiser to 4 and get a brutix, 7 miner 2's good tank, and good dronebay. One of the best mining ships in the game.

Go ahead take a thorax with it s small cargo bay and get wristpain after a few hours. As galente take vexor, drone bonus atm and large cargo bay.
or if you want the king of bs mining cpst efficiency wise buy a dominix, ok apoc mines a little bit more but costs the double. And after dromne changes I ll certainly prefer a domi over an apoc but I m a drone expert.
For real mining get a barge ok it has no defense but thats what friends are for and a covetor will beat any bs in isk an hour even when you re mining omber/kernite vs covetor doing plagio/pyrox.
Hmm maybe somebody will do the math and show that its wrong with the current mineral prices. It was true when I did the math a while ago.

Vexor is the way to go if your mining skills and drone skills are high.
The most cost effective miner for Gallente is the Brutix period. Don't consider a Dominix because at more than twice the cost and only 6 slots it's not worth it unless you're going to low sec.
If you have good drone skills you should be able to field a full rack of heavies for defence, whereas the Brutix is only good for high sec mining, but that won't be for too much longer when the new patch hits.

the Brutix is also a bugger to Fit, if you want miner II`s, last i checked you needed ether alot of Co-Prosesors (may fit 6 w/ lows fitted with Co-Prosessor I`s) or a Fair wack of skills and Co-Prosessor II`s

Vexor is the best cruiser for mining if you have High Drone skills if not Thorax. "The object of war is not to die for your corp, but to make the other b@##@#d die for his" |

Another vote for the Vexor. Four miner twos in highslots and use drones for additional mining power and/or defence. The cargobay of the thorax is painfully small (litarally so, RSI is not fun). ----- Sable's Ammo Shop at Alentene 5, Moon 4, Duvolle Laboratories Factory. Ammo at affordable prices. |

Vexor, at least in safe space.
2*T2 Miner + 2*named T1 Miner + 15*Harveys.
I think it's (2*60*1.25) + (2*36*1.25) + (15*30*1.25) = 150+90+562,5 = 802,5/min
And you still got dronebay for medium drones for NPC defence.

After looking around and reading your posts I'm leaning toward a Vexor but the regular one only has 275 cpu and I need 240 cpu just for my 3 miner-II's. I see the guardian-vexor but there is only one for sale in my region and it is priced at 500 million. That seems a bit high since al the others are 7 million and below. Do I just need to go to a different region and keep looking for a guardian-vexor? Are there any ship makers who are fairly priced in low-sec space?

Just drop the third Miner 2 off your equipment list, and add two T1 named ones instead. You can buy those of the market for less than one T2 Miner, and they use less CPU combined and add up as better than one extra Miner 2.
And forget about GVexor as mining ship =) It's an luxury item, with only 50 made =) --- SigPl/HQ&Log Coy/MNB(C)/KFOR |

In order to fit 4 x miner II on a Vexor, which is possible, you will need to have electronics at least ot lvl 4 if not lvl 5.
The same applies to the Brutix and you will also need electronic upgrades to lvl 4 to enable you to use Co Pro IIs as someone has already mentioned.
Don't be disheartened by having to do this as it all takes time and all your ships will benefit greatly from all the skills you train.
For now I would go with the Vexor, and maybe 8 - 10 mining drones, and named mining lasers.
Have fun
Justice.

Thanks all for your replies. They have all been very helpful.
My next question is, what is a named laser? Is that when the unit is named like "xecl drilling beam 1" as opposed to just "mining laser 1"?

Minix is the best mining ship in game all things considered and the skills to get it are very bacic. If you are a miner by profession you will have electronics 5 and you can fit 7 miner IIs or 6miner IIs and 1 xcl or something with a tank etc
