It would be really helpful if I could train my characters' skills via the web site without logging in. Someone much have asked for this before, but here it is again.
Basically we're paying for skill points since these are gained over time and we're paying for time. It would be nice to be able to get our money's worth even when we don't have a machine with a working eve client.

Then we should be putting pressure on the dev's to explain; why not? This is a solid idea which all players would benifit from.

Because it doesnt fit into the way they want eve to be played, this option would encourage more AFKing, which is not what they want. ------------------

They could at least give us a option to select 3 or 4 skills that will be trained after your currnet finishes. Training 6-10 hours skills are pain when you dont have time... |

I want to pvp offline too, I cant.
Why should some aspects of the game be available to offline?
Anyway, its to make it a bit harder for character farmers.

Benefits of Web triggered skill learning.
Training runs sever side so itÆs not as if you can power level you character up like in FF where lots of repeated actions can boost your characterÆs power out of step with time spent in game play. So you canÆt ôcheatö
Most of us have real lives to squeeze in and around out EVE careers and as a skill can finish training at any time being able to set the next one going is far more work friendly, as you quickly nip onto the web site to set the next skill going rather than break work rules about playing games in work time (itÆs also unlikely that your works machine can even run EVE)
Its probably more friendly on server loading as all you would be doing is loading the game and all that just to set the skill going. ( the web server could sit on all training requests and then once an hour go in and apply the changes thus reducing the hit on the server)
Training via web , benefits players who are away from home and only have web access and not games machine access. (ie on the train, on holiday, conferenceà..)
Web Training allows people to maintain their characters peak training ability where ever they are.
You need the client running to fly, trade, fight, but you are simply setting an existing skill training to the next level which could be done via a secure web page. And would be a friendly thing to allow us to do, after all we need to sign in to check the status of our character on the web, surely itÆs not too much to ask to simply be allowed to set the next one going from the same page.

it's a game, so play it.
if you work, that's great, and if you know a skill is gonna finish slap bang in the middle of a meeting...set a different, longer skill. if you've forgotten to do that, *gasp* you lose a few hours training time

They are also afraid of people automating it, because unless they write some evil client side Java/ActiveX module to manage the skill training, it should be easily automated.
Just imagine the macroers being able to train 10 characters at a time with no effort. The old EVE character trainer program was quite tame really.

Edited by: Gwenvahar on 07/11/2005 05:36:39 Spare me any symantics.. AFK'ing happens while Im playing enough as it is, because of all the real time it takes to acomplish goals and sit there watching time pass. For all the time I am logged in not playing I should have the minor benifit of making be most efficient use of training time when not logged in. Because ther is no que system for skills, and to avoid having to implement such a yatem, the simple benifit of changing skills form the web page is very valuable to a player like myself. I loose the most training time when I forget to change over skills before i goto work. If a tool was available so I could do a skill change over at work to save me a few hours I'd appreciate it alot, it would not affect how much I actually play.

I agree with CCP that you should log into the game to set the skill training. Like Prakhgoth however, I would like to see an option to set the next skill to train after the current one finishes.
This would still require you to log in regularly but you wouldn't be disadvantaged by a skill finishing at 10am in the morning and not getting home until 6pm that night.
3 or 4 is probably overkill, just being able to set the next skill to train should be enough. |

Character Farming 4TL.
I know it's a PITA to miss skills, but:
A) I use VNC to change skills on my home computer just fine. B) If all else fails, I ask my wife, or brother, to change skills for me. C) It's just a game. Some people in these topics sound like they are going to top themselves if they don't change skills immediately.

Someone in another thread a while ago had proposed the idea that a skill should continue training to level V automatically. So you would not be allowed to queue a different skill, but you could set what level to train a particular skill to. Then those pesky low levels that are hard to work your life around would get trained through without having to log in. I always thought that would be a nice compromise.

Like i replied to those other topics about skil training settings:
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
it takes the first 2 days to train some skills to lvl 4, what i do is train the small "10hrs skills" when im home playing, and set training those lvl4 skills to lvl5 when i'm away, even on hollidays (minamtar bs = 32days training)
what do you loose from "the time you paid that small 14.95 euro"? zit, nada, i'm training 24/7, without loosing 1 minute....
so there is you're reason why CCP NEVER do that off-line training stuff... The choronzon tr1be is recruiting, plz contact XurM ingame...

XurM, that's fine if you can play every day, and can play for 10 hours at a time. Not everybody has that kind of free time.

I started off liking the idea, Now I hate it.
The joy of the game is that People have to log into EvE in order to change skills. If you can do it by Website, Whats the point playing the game. ------------------------------------------------ "Its not Feasible to Dismiss an Idea because of lag" |

My motivation would be to try out my new skills that I've been waiting for.. As I said, I spend plenty of time playing, doing nothing but watching the autopilot take me places... For all that time I waste getting things done in EVE I would like it very much if I could manage my skills from my character sheet on the EVE web page. For the times when I can not be in play..
[Hakera & FireFoxx80] I can not concieve any real down side that isn't already being exploited.. Farming characters happens already.. Making the practice easier is not going to harm the game any more that it is harmed already.
Now if you really believe the 'joy' of this game is all about logging in just to change over skills I believe you have a very skewed vision of enjoyment. My joy comes from acomplishing goals and making profit. My frustrations with EVE are many, and not having better tools to streamline my training investments is one of them. Set up a que system, of any nature, or make my character sheet at the EVE web page more dynamic. Either solution would make me a happier player.

WE NEED OFFLINE TRAINING!!!
May be devs can get money for service? 20$ to enable this feature for example. Good solution against 'macros' users.

Another idea from another thread on this topic... if skills could be started via the web, then thwarting automated character managers could be done with those text confirmation things where you have to enter 4 or 5 characters of text from a garbled bitmap when you make a change. Kind of hard to explain... Many web sites use them now to prevent bots and scripts from using their web applications.

if u have a Smart Phone, it's simple.
I've seen people play quake 3 on their smart phone, but it was kinda cheating coz he was using VNC and remote controlling it.
However, this can be applied to eve, get a smart phone (nokia 6630 or 6680 are good, in the UK at least), setup VNC on it (special version for smartphones), setup vnc on ur home PC, and leave ur home pc running. Then you can access ur PC anywhere u are, at anytime, by logging on with vnc on ur phone. then just run eve + switch skills -----------------------
