I've seen a number of people type one of these in lcoal in various secure and 0.0 systems.
What does it mean?

gang me (tis funny when you enter hostile space and see that in local) You try to put your own gang request in and it sometimes works

Yep means gang me but also I belive the . is used by the majority of southern corps while our slightly backward cousins in the north prefer the x

hehe - i use '.'
a lot because it tests whether I have crashed or not. I get a bug where i'll just drop after long periods, so I put '.' in a chat box - if it shows up - i have not droped - otherwise i crash.
Sure thats just me though

No, it generally goes accompanied with a request on TS. Easier to gang if you don't have to scroll through 200 names but can just rightclick on the char.

no. Sometimes if a gang is on an op and you are trying to catch up to join, you won't be ganged until you reach them (in order to keep an accurate count on how many people are available that time). as it can be a pain in the arse watching military channels or alliance chat, the simple option is to put a "." or "x" in local when you catch up, which the fleet commander can easily see and then throw you an invite.
Of course, some people do try to use it to get into enemy gangs, but if the gang leader isn't doing show-info on everyone then he deserves to be infiltrated :).

They should really be typing it in corp or alliance chat tbh.
May not work great for the massive alliances I suppose.

Just a little hint for those who may not know about ganging - NOT a good idea to gang with people you don't know. This is often used by PVP pirates. You gang with them they gang warp to you and OPPPPS.

People don't generally read corp/alliance chat much on an op, but do watch local.

For the record, '.' was invented by IRON. We were also the first ones to discover you don't actually need to put a dot any more, after the text-changing patch - you can just press enter.
However after many many alliance meetings and a civil war, it was decided the dot would remain. -omg-

how did that come about?
who was the first to say 'x' and how did the other people know that was waht they had to do?
surely they'd have to say 'when i type "x" that means i want you to gang me' but it would have been much easier to just say 'gang me'.
chicken or the egg problem... :-P

Sometimes it could be a friend of the alliance asking for a gang (so possibly no shared channels), for example in the north we would pick sometimes some SA or .5. members to join a -V- fleet as we passed them in local. _____________________________________________________

The other responses you have gotten here are lies. I have no idea why these guys are telling you what they are maybe they just dont like your hair or something.
You were right the with your answer. It is a request to anyone in local to gang them. "x" or "." means this, when typed in local that is. Both of them also, (when typed in local) means that your are indeed a tit or twit, depending on your hairstyle.
There are tit and twits in every alliance, in every corner of the universe so when you see the request pop up, be a considerate player and gang them as requested. These are lonely ppl that need your help.

How one EARTH is it easier to say "gang me" (7 keystrokes) than "x" (1 keystroke)?
It came about ever since you could right click someone's name in the text box

a CLASSIC example of someone not grasping wot im talking about. im talking about how it was FIRST made so that 'x' meant the words 'gang me'.
i.e., three years ago, someone didnt just go 'x' and everyone automaticall KNEW wot it meant, did they? no.
somewhere, someone would have had to say:
'when i say 'x', can u gang me?'
But at that time when they would have said that, that person would have been better off saying:
'gang me'
than
'when i say 'x', can u gang me?'
Does THAT make it any clearer????

Actually, it was probably the other way round, the gang leader telling the others to make a dot in some channel so he/she can invite them easily.
Doing this in local always gets a laugh, though, especially in big alliances where leaders simply invite everyone.
