I have not logged in for a good long while. My reasons for not, are various and irrelevant to this post. Evidently, unless I am missing something... there will never be an epic log in screen for EVE Online again. The new launcher (at lease to me seems to have) eliminated the epic log in page.
This Brings Me To My Important Topic (worthy of trolling no doubt)
An audience is a fan base. Be it a cult following for a movie or a video game, it does not matter. A fan base has an invested emotional involvement in a product/production. A log in screen is a big part of EVE's emotional involvement. A new expansion comes and we are greeted with a new and awesome log in animation. It makes us feel like we are in a new version of the same old tired universe and it compels us (or tricks us) to continue playing.
Such things reinforce an emotional investment. An investment that your revenue is based upon and yet your business model does not seem to fully comprehend.
A Jukebox and colorful asteroids were also a part of many individual's emotional investment. Simple things like engine trails, which were taken out and then returned, are another example of emotional investments.
Golden Amarr ships was another big one (pilots emotionally invest in their race) Geometric lights on alien-looking worlds (not earth-moon-mars look-alikes) Black not military (stupid) green Navy Megathrons were an emotional investment. (I remember when I started how awesome the solid black silhouette of a navy raven looked and how much I wanted to mission in one)
These are just some basic examples. Another one is our old portraits. No matter how hard we tried we could not come close to making our new ones look even remotely like our old ones. The Amarr had some pretty cool head dresses that I don't think they have anymore, and Eternum here was defined by a cool set of forehead tattoos. Not face tattoos, not why-do-i-need-ray-ban-sunglasses-in-space....but jagged black tattoos on my forehead. I was emotionally invested in the appearance of my character. Hell, even the old style of the old forums were an emotional investment to many. It is a simlpe thing I know. It may even be a stupid thing, but is is a very real thing.
So...
If there is a setting that will allow me to see a log in animation again I would love for someone to tell me about it. If not, I will just add it to the list of emotional investments that have been removed from the game. Just in case anyone of relevance at CCP ever reads this thread, I will offer you a small (and humble) pearl of wisdom for you to consider.
"Enhancing something does not mean changing it's original form. If you deviat from the original inspiration then you have not enhanced the original inspiration, you have only changed it. "
Now you may not care to consider this and adapt your current business model. But consider the following. A truly great idea is like lightning in a bottle and it does not come very often in a lifetime. You need to try and stay true to it, because if you change it you may end up altering what made it that "special something" in the first place. You may end up mutating it into something that was not so charming, inspiring and/or all around "more then the sum of it's parts".
End post.
Oh, and while I am at it... changing the EVE Menu design after how many years? Bad, bad idea. I still have not gotten used to the assets options in station. Every-time I try to mess with it , it reminds me that "this eve" is not the same eve as I originally subscribed to more then half a decade ago.

You can still get a log-in screen if you launch the gave via the exefile.exe in EVE/bin, but the current screen is generic, having no relation to the current expansion at all.

TLDR it all but I also think CCP made a mistake removing the login screen. It was iconic and brought a nice feel to the game and since I am on a Mac I still have a generic login screen (not the same thing) but most importantly I hear Aura confirming when I connect to TQ. I will miss that.
I hope they try to do something with the character selection screen or introduce a full screen launcher that resembles the old login. |

I read it. It was actually well written and a good read, although I found the passive-aggressive tone a little too much for my personal liking. But EP has a point, and a good one.

Wow. Amazing post.
Yah, I totally remember always looking forward to the next login screen to see what it would look like. Some were fantastic. I remember sometimes on the dynamic ones I'd actually watch through the whole animation to see that tiny little spaceship in the background. I'm going to feel the loss for sure.
Reminds me of those lines in English Patient.... "I don't miss you yet. // You will.... you will...."
One other thing that they have taken out (to which I was pretty attached) were the daily news updates on login. I used to love to see RL reflected weirdly or completely transposed in that crooked mirror. You'd get assassinations in Khanid, riots in Gallente, and puppet trials in Caldari. I always felt like I was logging into a dynamic political simulation. I didn't actually live in empire but I still read it. That's gone too now.

I read the whole thing, and although the launcher didn't bother me, the OP has a point and he made me realize how powerful the loading screens of the past were and I thought back and realized I did have an emotional response to it, something along the lines of awe and sensing a feel of vast power emanating from it and yes, it did make me want to log on.

Good read EP.
Besides CCP removing the emotional attachment, it does seem they are also removing any emotional reaction causing ideas or items that someone might take offense to. When I first started, one of my early missions with the Caldari Navy was to obtain a large stash of drugs to keep their pilots on edge. And Amarrians were very keen on keeping their Minmatar slaves in line. But with today's game, drugs and slaves are rarely mentioned by players and never by the gaming universe.
Remember when modules had individual names but CCP felt that exponential, limited, and prototype would be much more practical so people would not be confused?
Or is CCP desiring to cater to the dumbest player and making sure he or she will not feel offended and thus making everything "sterile"? |

Seriously, what collective of deranged and ill-tasted individuals sat down and decided that desert or even grass land camouflage on a space ship uncapable of atmospheric flight or landing on planet surfaces would be not only a good idea, but one that people with more than one brain cell would actually enjoy to look at and fly with?
And most importantly, getting rid of the login splash screen was a worse decision than most of us realize. It was a simple art asset that allowed customers to invest emotionally in your product and gives an immediate and stark hint that you just released an expansion to your game which you simply dont want to pass by unnoticed. Not everyone is reading dev blogs, boards or follows live streams.
In a year or two people will forget about the ship balances of the last 3 expansions, but they will remember the distinct art that came with it.

^ this.
keep eve harsh and hard. the base nastiness of player interactions was only one part of that dark feel. we've kept that. but the cyberpunk art and social commentary were important too. i mean, you're in Iceland for christsake. what's there to worry about? |

I'm also on a mac and am seeing what you refer to as a "generic" login screen. I've actually never seen it and thought this was the Odyssey screen. I thought it was real uncharacteristic for an expansion login screen. Good to hear it's not.

If the only reason you were playing eve was due to an emotional connection to the log in screen, then you probably shouldn't be playing eve to be honest. The new launcher is far better than the login screen which looks outdated already. |

At least dies in style and when you have one in your fleet every logi will lock it because it's the fleet challenge, kill the enemy is secondary (or not) but bring the thing back
