Hi.
Noob here. I'd like to visit Dead End and other 'tourist' spots in low snd nullsec space, and my thinking was just to go in a shuttle, but apparently some people transport hi-value stuff trying to stay under the radar orcwhayever, and I already got ganked once.
I'm not a noob complIning about being podkilled , that's Eve, no problem.
It strikes me that it might be interesting to aim for a ship build that's designed for tourism. If I go on safari in the African savanah, I don't go on a moped, after all, I drive something which can tank a charging rhino, right?
So some advice for what ship and fitout I might try to have as a goal for this purpose would be great. Ideally, I'd like to just be able to live long enough to run away if I'm set upon by the lions! :D |

If you want to fly around low/null without being hassled, a covops is a pretty good choice.
A shuttle actually is pretty safe in low, unless you hit a smartbomb camp. Don't go to Rancer and this is fairly unlikely, though.

It will depend on your skills.
However, a shuttle when not using autopilot is fast and agile (and very cheap) and hard to kill in low sec, but not impossible.
Alternatively, a frigate with an afterburner or microwarp drive in mids as well as warp core stabilsers in low slots will help.
Experiment and have fun, but make sure your clone is up to date in case you are pod killed! ISD Arooga Captain ISD STAR (Support Training and Resources)

Heh, looks like it was a smartbomb that got you.
Really, that doesn't happen all that often, and is usually only seen in certain systems. Don't go to Rancer, for instance. |

The combat log said it was indeed a smartbomb. It was as soon as I made the first jump to lowsec from hisec.
Is it likely that every system connecting the two will be camped like this? |

For just roaming around and looking at stuff use a shuttle, and plot your route carefully. Use the in-game map, and view the statistics of "pilots in space," "ships destroyed," and "pods destroyed." Avoid the giant glowing orbs as much as possible.
For transporting high-value items, either use a covops and cloak or (my preferred method) use a courier service like Red Frog. They have a low-sec arm and a high-value arm. It can get somewhat expensive, but the insurance it gives you against being ganked is worth it in my opinion. I know sometimes it's difficult to realize just how much you spend on incidental things each month or year, but seriously, EVE is very cheap entertainment compared to most things... If you are a smoker, smoke one less pack a week and pay for EVE, with money left over to pick up a cheap bundle of flowers for the EVE widow upstairs. |

A few systems are known for Smartbomb camps, but usually you can avoid them with two or three more jumps in highsec to a quieter entrance.
As Pinaculus said, learn how to use the star map. |

If you can't fly a cov-ops, qhich would be optimal, then any attack frigate such as a slasher or atron with speed/agility mods & rigs |

Get a Tech 1 Interceptor frigate... fit the low slots with Nanofiber Internal Structures (increases your speed and agiliy... which helps you warp and fly faster)... slap on a Microwarpdrive, a Damage Control, and some mods to increase your tank (try to avoid using armor plates as they will decrease your speed and agility)... now you have a proper "tourist" fit for low-sec.
In null-sec... Covert-ops ships with fits described above are one of the few things that will keep you safe. Know that when you activate your cloak your have a 2 second window to activate your Microwarpdrive as well... giving your temporary speed on top of stealth (to escape warp disruption "bubbles"). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |
