3 day trials The most basic of tutorials (shoot this rat, mine this rock, now off you go) No 'career agents' for new players ISK had more value When Battleships and Interceptors were what the cool kids were flying. A time before BoB. No Black Rise, or Drone Regions. Miner IIs on a Thorax were the mining ship of choice.

Having started in 2005, I never did that - whenever I knew a skill would finish in the middle of the night, I switched to a long skill and reenabled the one that would finish at night in the next morning before work (or anytime convenient for me).
But more on Topic, I remember where you had to switch to the regular Keyboard for the decimal sign because on most european Keyboards Settings, the one on the numeric pad didn't work - not so long ago actually, but that made my game sooo much more convient (no sarcasm).

I remember:
-Nosferatu always transferring 100% of the capacitor, everyone fit them. -No cap power relay stacking penalty for shield mods, everyone XL C5-L ravens, apocs, anything they could. -Dual MWD Cavalry Ravens. -Dual MWD anything. -Standard missile launchers could fit 1 Cruise missile, and cruise missiles did full damage regardless of signature or velocity, so kestrels and crows were the best frigate / interceptors hands down. -Torpedo splash damage, blowing up pods was a certainty if you were torpedoing a ship to death.
And the final blow:
-I remember fitting 250mm railguns onto my armageddon, chaining the best belt NPCs that existed at the time (50k cruisers) and making about3 million isk after a few hours of ratting.

You know what I remember? Learning skills.
God, **** learning skills.
Incredibly stupid and arbitrary. A needless roadblock. Not fun or interesting or even useful, just an advantage that the veterans held that they didn't want to give up. They wasted two months on needless bullshit, so that means you had to as well.
I remember everybody giving slippery slope arguments, demanding the removal of other arbitrary skills, or of implants. I remember the kicking and screaming that the game was turning to casualization and that the sky was falling.
And then it came around, and people got their SP back, and I no longer felt uncomfortable recommending the game to new players.
When thinking of most MMOs, there are often points in time where you can say "here's where they went bad, and that game is dead now". Honestly, Eve has been going for 10 years, and it's better than ever. Back in my day, things weren't better. They were rustier. They were uglier. They weren't as good. CCP deserves far more praise than they get. They're the only MMO company I can think of that have managed to make a game consistently better over a period of over ten years.
Except for Incarna, obviously. I mean Jesus Christ guys, what the **** were you doing? |

I remember when there were no sentry guns at gates. anywhere.
I remember when the autopilot, that was introduced in the last couple of weeks of beta, would still randomly just stop working after the game went live
I remember when A typhoon with a piddly active shield tank could permatank CONCORD cruisers while pretty much doing whatever you wanted in 1.0 space. CONCORD didnt' have battleships yet.
I remember when ships had 10 drones max, instead of 5.
I remember when thorax could launch and control 8 HEAVY drones at the same time ;)
I remember the MWD / AB combos, when you could activate both modules at the same time ;)
I remember when putting an oversized afterburner on your ship had no agility penalty.
I remember putting 4 MWD's on my typhoon and achieving speeds greater than warp speed. ( Took over 10 minutes to slow down to a manueverable speed after activating all 4 in rapid succession )
I remember the 100k book mark copies I had for gate-to-gate travel before warp-to-zero was introduced. I also remember the lag created by the folks copying these things en masse creating so many database entries...
I remember when the smallest transaction you could make was 1 isk. ( no fractional isk ). When buying up tritanium at 1 isk per unit, couriering it to a battleship producer and selling in via the trade window for 1.5 isk per unit was a very profitable enterprise.
I remember when NPC convoys dropped useful items -- like Harvester Mining Drones...
I remember when Spodumain and Arkornor spawned in 0.1 system belts in empire!
I remember when NPC stations had constant buy orders for minerals at:
TRI :: 1 isk PYE :: 4 isk MEX :: 16 isk ISO :: 64 isk NOC :: 256 isk ZYD :: 1024 isk MEGA :: 4096 isk
because noone had any isk in the beginning :)
I remember when the Jovian General went rogue, got whooped by a fleet of player battleships ( after some serious struggles ) and it dropped the first T2 BPOS ( mining laser II's ). I remember that Techell and Taggart Transdimensional bought the ones they didn't get out-right, and had a monopoly for many months. cost to build was around 100k, adn they were selling for like 40m isk each...
I remember when the joint research station was being built in Crielere but noone knew what it was. Crielere was high sec at the time... But during the final days of the in-game event, something happened to CONCORD and they started shooting everyone, regardless of sec status. I remember those of us that had battleships would go and distract concord so others could try and get in/out of system for the event, since CONCORD had the gates camped :)
I remember when in-game events happened regularly and were fun.
I remember when The People's Front of Minmatar would have epic battles with CVA / PIE, and how people would run for cover and dock when either side entered the other's low sec systems.
I remember when battleships could target and track all targets just as easily as a frigate.
I remember when all missiles could fit on all ships ----- I miss the cruise missile Kestrel....
Oh there's more, but I doubt anyone will make it this far in the post.

The Jukebox with awesome songs such as the classic 'Below the Asteroids' but also, Solitary Pilot, Primordial Star Clouds, and a couple others.
The OLD CYNO EFFECT, they really should 'modernize' it and bring it back. You used to know when you were getting hotdropped
Oh, and the old laser sounds. Abaddon blasting away at my Myrmidon is one of my fondest memories of this game. We had just gotten into a decent sized cruiser/bc brawl with a corp that we were at war with, the CEO died and came back in his Abaddon, I wasn't able to bug out in time, I remember looking at his battleship slowly melting away my Armor and the piercing screeching sound 'piiiCHHHHHHHHHHHHOUUUU!!!!!!!! |
