Seven years as of today I been playing this game.
Not in the 100M SP club though - took a break in 2007.
Been lot's of changes. Not bitter about it.
In my day:
There was no warp-to-zero and the first things I learned was AB and ECM. Those were the days.
But...
You didn't get ganked in lowsec unless you had something worth taking. It was actually a lively place where people had fun and enough pirates were still honoring ransoms they could make a living off it. Then people starting heinous camps and would put the names of everybody they killed in their forums and make fun of them. Things went downhill from there.
(at least the same crowd that did that are still crying over WTZ but hey, yeah this is a sandbox but when you take the pale and shovel and hit everybody over the head with it, and then make your game all about pointing and laughing, you can file WTZ under "what the hell did you THINK was going to happen?")
You had to really work to scan anything down. The old probing system was esoteric and difficult. You had to launch your probes uphill in 3' of snow - OK it seems that way compared to now.
To get into a BC was still considered a big deal.
There were no Drakes, Canes, etc. The Cyclone was just as cool then as it is now.
Gallente ships were effective (sorry, couldn't help it).
I used to put lasers on Brutix's. Luckily those ships were put out of their misery.
Missiles were OP.
Before the icons for modules had little indicators for T2/3/faction/office/deadspace, I would right click to sell them, see no market value for them, and not knowing much about contracting items, would reprocess them. (true story)
There was no Faction Warfare back then.
There was no skill queue. You had to get up at 4AM to start up another skill. There was "Ghost Training" where you can be unsubbed and continue training a long skill, but I don't know how common it was and I never did it personally.
I also recall that if you got killed while training a skill you had to start that training over again but not entirely sure about that.
The servers were powered by hamsters.
Should I be a bitter vet and say everything is crap and all that? No. I would say the game has improved. The player base I would say has become more polar though. The worst of the worst got even worse but at the same time the good guys or "white hats" have gotten better.
Probably the best improvement is the story itself and also the fiction side of the game. I tell people that this is not so much just a game but a sci-fi story that has broken the bounds of novels or comics: you are in the story. The live events and the fiction, the in-game news and novels, round things out perfectly. This is an often overlooked selling point of the game. I also think that CCP does a good job managing to keep the fictional aspect going under the weight of development and other demands. Back in 2006 things were much more quiet story-wise, but the progress is impressive.
Would I play it for another 7 years? Yes I would, and intend do, unless I drop dead or the world goes Mad Max or something. For me much of the game has been "skill queue online" due to lack of time, but it never fails: after months of non-event, things happen that I never forget about. |

You forgot a few things.
Way back when, the Hulk used to be THE mining tank. Barges and Exhumers did not have dedicated ore holds. Drones in missions used to drop alloys, and we had craftable space mines (some of us still do). |

I believe what he is saying here is seven years ago (when he joined EvE) he brought the worst fail fits to the game...aka he cant fit ships for sh*t. Correct me if I am wrong OP.
As a side note. Your bit about piracy and them no longer honouring ransoms, if I were a pirate, I would honour a ransom. In my eyes, no sense in wasting good ammo if you already got isk outta them...hmmm tempted to pirate now...proper stuff, none of this sit on a gate wasting ammo on anything and everything though... It's human nature to want to explore. To find your line and go beyond it. The only limit, is the one you set yourself. |

Whenever I see the question "what's the worst ship in Eve?" the answer is "mine".
Of course now I fit them a little better but to be honest, it's because of PVP. I don't want my fit being posted all over C&P. It can cut both ways though: if I want to kill somebody in RL I just have to lose to them in PVP there is a chance they die laughing at the KM.
Piracy was different back in the day. I used to play cat and mouse running probe scans in Amamake (because it was challenging and managed to steal ships that way too) and so I had enough run-ins and convos with them to get the concept of that career path.
Many threads have existed on the topic, and many have waxed poetic on it. So I'll just say that piracy was different back then because on those days the people doing it actually enjoyed it.

I like that analogy, kill them via the kill mail. Now I'm curious enough to look for some of your losses
Although, you comment about the worst ship in EvE hmmm I wonder what the actual worst ship ever in EvE has actually been like? But then again define worst, is it the amount of isk lost or the guy who loses a ship that has one of every weapon type fitted and an absolute tonne of modules that you bash you head against the wall looking at?
Hmmm I wasn't around when that sort of piracy was on the go, honourable and what not. You should attempt to bring it back!!! It's human nature to want to explore. To find your line and go beyond it. The only limit, is the one you set yourself. |

If you can pull up my old losses from prior to 2008, I'd like to know how you did it. There's a cyclone from 2008 that might still be in there that could afford some entertainment but the hurricane after that is still giving me PTSD just remembering it. |

Nah only showing 3 losses on all the boards, nothing prior to 2008 so your safe haha. Damn, was looking forward to that. On the other hand, my killboard is attrocious It's human nature to want to explore. To find your line and go beyond it. The only limit, is the one you set yourself. |
