This char is about six months old, excluding pauses, mainly manufacturing oriented. I build mostly cruisers and battlecruisers. A single batch of ships requires a hell lot of tritanium, takes many trips with my mammoth to get it all. If I fit my best expanders I can get the cargo to around 15 000 m^3. 1.5 mil trit.
Right now Im building ten battlecruisers, 16 mil trit is requires, 11 trips for tritanium. Not all that fun. My aim is to get a freighter to get all the hauling done in one jump. But the cost of those are insane. I can earn 1 to 4 millions per ship sold, it will take ages for me to get 1 billion.
Wouldnt it be reasonable to add something between freighters and industrials?
I think Ive seen a discussion like this before, tried to use eve search but didnt find anything. So... comments? Anyone else feels the same, that is in the very same situation?

Put out a buy order and let someone with a frieghter fill it?
You don't have to do it all yourself. ______________________________________________

Avons idea works too.

Has a compression factor of 10 so I am told.
Ie, instead of fitting 1 mil trit in your hauler, make a bunch of passive targeters, and you can fit enough in your hauler to be the equivilant of 10mil trit. Then reprocess at destination.
Obviously need perfect production/refining skills not to lose Trit.

I could buy bigger expanders (very expensive) and get containers inside my mammoth... even refine loot from the few missions I do. But that will only give me a fraction more tritanium per trip. Ive thought about it and the more expensive expanders isnt really worth it.
And for the "put up an order" -part, one reason I go get them myself is to get down the prices. And since I do mostly manufacturing, Im not doing that much besides hauling minerals and mining.
Just me that thinks that the jump from 15 000 m^3 to 750 000 m^3 is a bit extreme?

A slightly increased buy price on your trit is still a damn sight cheaper than buying a frieghter - or decent expanders. ______________________________________________

You don't find them, you make them where the trit is available in large quantities.

I'll admit this is largely a selfish thing on my part but I'm slowly building up a small career as a freighter service for corps and players (and this isn't easy considering you need people to trust you with their goods that takes time and patience).
Having some mid range ship that basically removes the need for a freighter would kill off mine and a number of other people like me careers so I'd be against it.
The current situation has created a niche role for traders that would be killed off.

Competition isnt the issue, its a case of the sort of services we are able to provide being made redudant by making it easy to get a ship that no longer makes freighters useful for large scale movements except in very specialised and specific roles that most corps manage themselves.

Dont elite indys offer better cargo space? Also you might be able to sqeeze in more if/when t2 expanders are out.... although at first buying 5 might be as much as a freighter _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- "It is better to die on our feet than live on our knees"

2 ways to do this (I've had to move ALOT of trit in the past)
1) Don't move it. Put a buy order up thats higher than thouse around you. This sounds too "simple" but lots of times it works. Not spending a whole day moving crap might be worth 0.20 per trit.
The problem with #1 is that sometimes even with a really high buy order you might be somewhere that doesn't get much traffic. You cant buy enough trit. Proceed to #2.
2) But 4 or 5 passive targter bpos Reserach the bejesus out of them. Make sure the trit you want to haul starts in a station with a factory. Crank out passive targeters. Load em up, move em to destination that has a refine station. Refine em, you just moved ALOT of trit. This is called compression. You can do it with pyrite too. I've moved 50+ mil isk in trit and pyr in one load using compression.
Yes you need good refine skills and good refine standing. Even if you dont (you should though, you are an industrial specialist) calculate the % you would loose doing this. then factor in the time you save making 1 trip instead of 10. (might be ALOT of time if its a 40 hop move). The % loss may be perfectly acceptable if it saves you 10 hours of play time.
My refine skills are good, but not great. (damn scrapmetal processing). Even with just "good" skills its almost always preferable to suck up the wastage loss to save a huge chunk of time.

I had enough minerals to build myself a Battleship the other day, all except tritanium. I needed about 7.5m trit, so I put a buy order up at 1.7 per unit in that station. This was a very quiet system, off the highways. Not much of a local market for minerals at all, there wasn't 7.5m trit in total of all sell orders for 2 jumps.
The next morning I logged on wondering if 1.7/unit was enough. Sure enough, my entire buy order had been filled overnight.
I know quite a few people with freighters that hire themselves out at fairly reasonable prices. Better hiring someone to move massive amounts of stuff rather than move it yourself in a hauler. Either that or just put a buy order up for the minerals where you want them.

lol, dude you spent a billion or more isk on that thing. I think whatever you were doing before was making you money and you didn't have your frieghter you could survive.

Regardless of the reasons for wanting it , I agree that it would be nice to have something somewhere in the middle. Perhaps in the 200km3 range. Not quite as slow as a freighter, but not nimble either.

I was able to aquire the freighter from alot of dedicated work and a loan from a friend all aimed towards getting the freighter itself.
I've invested over a billion isk in my chosen career as well as several months of training to get freighter to level 5 (33 days on level 5 now). To see that all wasted becuase a smaller cheaper ship that is basically going to replace the need for freighters come out would be more than a little depressing atm.
I enjoy what I do and building up the contacts to further my career as a transport service, I'm not sure what else I would want to do if that niche was eleiminated in the name of convienience.

Think in more ways than one... My hauler can tug an entire jet can (and then some) in his expanded Iteron V. I think he's got something along the lines of 30.000 m3 usable space when hauling inorganics.
Note that I just gave you a couple of clues on what mods, what ship, and what to put in the ship.

Hehe.... Occator with 1 local hull nanofiber and the rest local hull expanders -> goes to 21009 m¦, that is with 7 giant containers exactly 27309 m¦. Then a named MWD (YT-8 for me, lacking mwd skill) and a medium capacicator expander II and perhaps a cloaking device.
Does about 600 m/s (if i remember right)
The entire Ship is then about 300 million worth, but as I said, 27309 m¦ at 600 m/s.

My occy moves at 42.5 m/s without MWD on (with 6 expanders) ..
It is acceptable for AFK'ish hauling - since containers will bring it to 34k m3 cargo ..
But if u venture anywhere near <.5 space - take care
I was actually webbed once - flew around 7 m/s with MWD on
I eventually escaped the pirate - since i had insane shields on it - and constant whining in local / corp / every other chat channel i could find eventually got 3 BS's to help me out

Edited by: Sergeant Spot on 09/12/2005 11:23:20 Passive Targetter I BPO
Make sure to research it a bit.
Passive Targetters refine to produce 12,500 trit
My Passive Targetter BPOs are at ME: 100. I forget the exact number, but takes somewhere between 12,520 and 12510 trit to build one, so when I refine I lose about 1/10 of 1% of my trit (I think of this as a "Compression fee"....), but I pack 25 x as much trit in a ship.
For example: One 3000m3 giant can (holds 3900m3) packed with 780 Passive Targetters = 9,750,000 trit.

Possible... I heard that armor hardners are absolutely insane... I don't want to sound stupid, but it was said that in a 20k m3 hauler you can squeeze a nearly billion trit. Now that would be a great compression factor. I'll confirm this soon...

The problem with using Passive Targeters to move trit is the time.
At ME168 my PT BPOs use 12503 Trit to build 1 unit. Let's say 1250 for ease of calculation
At PE50 and Industry 5, build time is about 6m2s (down from 8m). If we say 6m for ease of calculation, that means I can build 10 PTs an hour or 240 per day.
240 x 12500 = 3,000,000
Therefore 1 very heavily researched PT BPO can at best turn 30000m3 of trit into 1200m3 of PTs every 24 hours.
The OP's 16M trit would take 5d8h to convert with 1 BPO or if they had Mass Prod 5, they could do it with 6 in 21h20m.
