I live in Hemel Hempstead.
Where I live is two miles away and my house shook, windows are blown out.
The industrial estate next to the oil refinery has damage.
Sides blown off factories, windows blown in.
The police where all over it eventually.
Where we were looking - we were looking through a factory/building that literally had nothing left.
You can't see the sky where I live because the tremendous amount of smoke.
Everyone nearby felt it. People were shouting out their windows for information.
You could really feel the heat, just like sitting next to a bonfire.
My mother works at Hemel Hospital and its a burns specialist - she has been called in to work. |

possible terror attack?
Possible, but highly unlikely. Terrorists nowadays tend to want to cause civilian casualties, not economic damage: blowing up an oil refinery won't kill many people.
Someone probably got careless.

Edited by: FireFoxx80 on 11/12/2005 08:59:59 My mum lives down near there, about a mile away too.
Hemel is also famous for it's Jedi (Again, near my mum's)
Seems to be a big-ass explosion.
Edit: Leo, are you in Adeyfield then?

id put on a gasmask if i where you...
as for explosions...
a guy was welding inside the tank of a tanker truck...
the idiot caused a MASSIVE explosive (imagine a 10 meter fire*****er going off)
knocked my mom over and *****ed the windows of our house...
we live about 2-3 kilometers from the gas station where it wentoff...
think the blast was as big as a 200kg (500 pound) bomb going off ____________ The cargo bay is overloaded and cannot be made to fit Expanded Cargohold I. It is currently only capable of fitting 8772.12 units and it is currently jammed full with 9558.33 units. |

They've just said on the news that the explosion was heard as far south as Wimbledon, and as far north as Warwickshire.
Now that's a loud bang.

Warwick (Warwickshire) is 2.5/3 hours drive west of Hemmel, not north, your news reader must be a foolio Didn't hear it up here in Scotland... obviously

Am I right in thinking that the smoke etc from fires such as these can, if there is enough output (which there seems to be here), cause their own weather patterns inc acid rain?

it's not a refinery it's a fuel storage area, they store some demostic fuel, but mainly store fuel to supply luton airport (not sure about heathrow?), if you watch the news people who work there have stated "there are underground pipelines going to luton airport" and a couple of others from grimsby an canvey island refineries i believe?

It was an accident, not terrorists, so people don't need to worry about that.
As for the loudness, I heard it at 6am, woke me up. It has been heard as far as france and holland too apparantly.
People shouldn't worry about fuel prices either, people are being told to stay at home anyway.

I am a resident of Hemel Hempstead too, though I am away at university in staffordshire currently, Something startled me this morning about the time of the blast, then my fiancee who lives in St. Albans rang me, stuttering and shaking as she was talking (you could tell from her voice).
Saying that she thought a plane had come down, as her windows and doors shook and her loft door came open. She could see the flames from her flat.
My best friend in Leverstock Green (Hemel Hempstead) had his window blown in and his front door blown open.
My Family live in grovehill, they got a fright when it went off, and saw loads of people running aorund outside, they are all ok though.
Best wishes to all who were affected by it.

I stand corrected - but I cuold have sworn that the bbc reported it as a refinery earlier today.

It's probably the biggest bang in this country since the Blitz, if not even bigger than those. Not surprising it frightened the hell out of a lot of people - including my two nieces, age 9 and 7, who live in Luton and got hurled out of bed this morning at just after six am.
