So, i was wondering, with all the tweaks ships are getting with their appearance over the last couple expansions and such... is there any chance of getting the weird pointless lopsided engines removed from the Omen/Mach/Mega/etc? (or mirrored onto the other side.) Same with the thing on the side of the Tristan/its bomberT2 now that i think of it.
Thoughts? |

Omen does look kinda silly, Moa is just terribly ugly, the mega and mach aren't too bad though. |

CCP's CEO has said that symmetry is evil/bad/wicked... I'm a fan of symmetry myself, but.. meh So, you're a bounty hunter. No, that ain't it at all. Then what are you? I'm a bounty hunter. |

This game needs more asymmetric hulls! More vertical hulls! More horizontal hulls!

The Mega reminds me of a giant rifter, but without the side wings... Cloaking being on a ten minute manual cycle timer? (Author: Bree Okanata) Fine. As long as there is a ten minute timer for being docked in a station. Also, you can't stop moving in the game. Just add in a way so every ten minutes you are randomly warped to the nearest other player. Keeps people from going AFK. |

I like that name....
I'm fine with asymetrical engines... but they should at least look like the forces would balance, and the center of thrust is in line with the center of mass.
Ie, 2 small engines on the left, 1 large on the right: fine 3 huge engines on the left, a tiny one on the right.... blerghhhhh |

Symmetry is a genetic trait humans are attracted to because it shows healthy development in-vitro. I have no need for it in my space vessels. I think the innate need for symmetry has made the ship models boring. Models should not look sensible and conservative, they should be made totally free from boring biases. |

Too late.
It now looks as if my dog swallowed it and it passed through him.
All the pointy bits are now gone, its shape got rounded and its surface glitters. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

Amarr has plenty of symmetrical hulls, I don't see a problem with a little bit of variety. You presume that these "tumour engines" don't do anything, why? I think some of you are forgetting the mess of frigates that smashed together to create the Bantam too. :P |

Well, to begin with, they are ugly. If caldari want to be asym because its their hat or something, then by all means, have ugly lopsided ships, but amarr and gallente are supposed to have a appreciation of aesthetics, and minmatar are supposed to be functionally minimalist (read: armour plates welded to scaffolding) and that would be served best by keeping their ships in line.
Secondly, its non-functional, anything those tumours can do, they could do better with two, and having silly pods sticking off the side of the ship would throw its centre of balance off, borking its thrust efficiency, since they would have compensate for this silly tumour on the side of the ship.
Ultimately however, i want to fly nice aesthetically pleasing ships, and if enough people feel the same way, then thats all the reason we would need to ask for it to be changed, or even if there are any plans for it to be changed. The mega would look better with either no tumour, or two. The same for the Mach, and all the other ones i and others have mentioned.
Unbalanced hull designs are a symptom of a unbalanced mind! :P |

I would prefer CCP spent their time fixing the hulls that currently broken in terms of gameplay rather than trying to please us with aesthetics. I happen to think Amarr ships are rather gorgeous, Omen included. I think you're taking things a little too seriously as far realism goes. These are internet spaceships, as long as they get me from point A to B and let me blow up other ships, I don't see any reason to change their designs because you don't like asymmetry. In my opinion, imperfection is perfection. |

I hate all the A symmetry ships with a passion!!!! :) nah seriously it looks like the thorax is dragging a massive turd around with it.. i hate the enyo's stupid pointy thing.. Raven is pretty on one side and .. well less said about the other side. Mach/mega models look ridiculous with the extra engine on top Tech 3's need to be multi role ships not cruiser hulls with battleship tank and insane resists ABC's are clearly T2 in all but name AB's need a buff-á like a big mass reduction ... module tiercide FTW role based instead of tiers please. |

Ah, but thats just it, my original premise couches on the fact they are already spending time tweaking or outright redoing the appearance of many ships, compared to that, my request is perhaps, a hours work at absolute max per ship, they could literally do it in a day. Cut the model in half, and mirrior the side you want to keep, repeat with the textures/shaders/etc, about the only thing that requires original work is moving hardpoints/engine thrust emitters (and for all i know they might be attached to the mesh, or a mesh of their own, and as easily mirrior-able)
That said, i was more asking if there were any such plans, hoping that there was already some momentum in that direction, but if not, perhaps if this thread gets popular enough, they might look into it.

I prefer ship designs which are mostly symmetrical in design for several reasons. Primarily because from a physics point of view, asymmetry in a moving structure is just way harder to balance. In space, where EVE takes place, we have no resistance to movement, so physical symmetry is not critical but mass and trust symmetry are. Not just for main engine thrust but also for maneuvering thrusters for ship rotation.
Ships in any space type game should be mass and trust balanced front to back, top to bottom and left to right. Visually I see no reason where there should not be some asymmetry though, it makes the ships a little more interesting.
Now other non-moving structures in EVE can be as asymmetric as you please. Because they are not moving under their own power, symmetry is not an issue. My two favorite looking ships in EVE are the Nocits and Manticore. The coloring and shape are just great, just wish they were T3 and modular so I could fit them for different roles. |
