Hi im just looking for some advise to see if im the right or the wrong.
So my base system at the moment is Gelfiven in hi sec. Im hanging round here learning the mechanics of exploration doing some ratting. Making my first moves into low sec etc.
My question is about stealing from yellow wrecks (not salvaging)
Quite often when i have a fly round the belts looking for some rats i steal from the npc wrecks that the miner have created. today i was told i was ganking/ can flipping/ and basicly a bad boy for stealing their stuff and they are 10 day old characters etc. And they are trying to buld up their new corporation and they are protecting their investment etc. blah blah blah.
And actually the thing that wound me up that i should ask permission before stealing from them.
I understand that rookie systems its a no no to try to blag them into shooting through stealing their stuff and this wasnt my intention.
but if they shoot at me i will shoot back you know.
so 1, Is gelfiven a `rookie` system and is what im doing not acceptable and im going to get my wrist slapped by CCP
2, Do theives normally knock on the door and ask permission before they steal.
3, Am i within in my rights to continue what im doing ?
4, What do the people here think about what im doing is it wrong or right or normal or if the miners should lighten up a little
as i see it its a free universe i can steal but i have to understand the consequences which i do. dont do the crime if you cant do the time etc.

Your not doing anything wrong.
However their reaction is understandable (to some extent), especially with them being younger players and not fully understanding the game mechanics them self yet i imagine. (Please note i might be wrong about this and they are fully aware over how EVE works) A lot of miners will get this very..black and white view of things and instantly think that every person that steals from their cans (rat loot or ore) is bad people that is trying to sabotage them and are going after their members personally. And of course, in some cases this is actually the truth but by the sounds of it you just picked their cans at random because they happened to be there.
In my opinion the best thing you can do is explain to them that what you are doing is a completely valid game technique, and that they have the chance to stop/punish you if they choose too do so. If they decide to do nothing but smack talk in local..well their loss and they need to either learn to accept it, or get outside help (like hiring mercs on you or whatever).
But most importantly (again my own opinion) make them understand that stealing someones loot does not make you a bad person. You can be a yarr screaming pirate in EVE but that does not mean that you are a bad person in real life, or that your ingame actions represent who you are in real life. If the miners decide to get to know you they might find that your a really good person and you can help them protect their investments in the future
Short version, your not doing anything wrong, and no you dont have to ask for permission to steal stuff. Some people will ask if its ok that they salvage the wrecks you leave behind and so on, but at that point its not stealing anymore and its a completely different play style (in other words they are trying to be the good guys).
Please note...i consider my self one of the "good guys", never stolen anything (well ok..stole a retriever from a bugged marco miner who had ejected once), never scammed anyone, and never done any can flipping my self, but some of the nicest people i know in EVE are pirates and "bad guys" and they have taught me that i need to respect their play style as much as i want them to respect mine

Stealing from yellow wrecks is fine, although it's considered a little naughty hence you get flagged. If the miners want the wreck contents then they should take them, if they shoot at you, go back in something nasty and turn their ships into your wrecks. You should also try salvaging the wrecks, they hate that even more because they can't shoot you for it.

Surely the whole point of that rule is to protect players who don't know any better.
So, if they were complaining then they obviously knew exactly what the score was and therefore the rule doesn't apply to them. |

Look at it this way. High Sec has some of the most congested systems in the game. It is your social duty to clear wrecks that others leave, and cans too. Get stuck in and remember, you can't hear anybody crying in space. |

If they aren't going to take care of their wrecks, they can do what I've done on occasion and at least abandon them. Sure it maybe a small amount of money on the table, but if it takes more to move my slow ass barge over to get one scrap metal and return later with a salvager, then I figure the time is greater than the reward... so those wrecks go blue out of courtesy to others.
I figure they can do the same. |

Nothing wrong, totally legit. They're wrecks in belts, you didn't can flip them or grief them in the nub system.
Since you "stole" you get suspect flagged, which means they have the ability to take matters into their own hands if they so desire - ie, shoot you, and so can anyone else.
This is all valid game mechanics and there are solutions in-game too |

This is quite friendly compared to other forms of legal grief. One of my favourites is finding a way to young character in a Battleship doing hisec anomalies. First you steal some loot for the flag, then you start bumping. He will have a hard time getting away, and an annoying flashy bumper right next to him. Chances are he will engage out of frustration with his failfit shiny, thinking your ship to be no match for a Battleship. You can even add some surprise logi in the mix if you don't mind those getting Suspect flagged too. |

Can flipping / baiting
This refers to the practice of (ab)using the Criminal Flagging System to cause a fight between yourself and an unsuspecting party in high-security space. See main article for more.
Can flipping is officially considered griefing only in Rookie Systems. Some people do it just for fun, without the actual intent to cause the feelings of harassment and frustration in the victim. It is, however, also a typical form of griefing in the classic sense.

1. I do not know
2. Not normally, but it has been known to happen similarly in even real life.
3. It is Eve. Is there anything you cannot do?
4. My personal opinion purely ---> If you are in rookie system, it is WRONG. Otherwise, and understanding Eve, I would say it is right and normal.
I would also point out that p[laying as you claim you do would give me the right if I were prowling around in such a system and saw you go all flashy, to attack and kill you and take all your toys.
But of course, you might kill me instead, etc. Or a bunch of us might jump you. Or a bunch of you might jump us.
