Given the new map being rolled out in Dust, I was wondering if there is any lore precedent for planetary warp gates?
This could just be a weapon or some kind of energy generator or something, but it sparked a thought. |

The closest thing to an on on-the-ground stargate, jump gate or warp acceleration gate in the EVE lore would be the DUST drop uplink, which serves as effectively a cyno field for a very small, very local wormhole to drop a clone trooper. The lore also says that travelling through it comes with the serious downside of being unbelievably painful, and also giving the trooper a fatal dose of radiation.
Given that the life expectancy of a clone using one is measured in seconds this latter downside is something of a non-issue. For ordinary people commuting to work, however, being fatally irradiated might reasonably be thought of as a major inconvenience. It could be considered a bit of a fau pax to take the wormhole to your job waiting tables in Caille, only for your skin to slough off into the customer's soup.
Starships, being heavily shielded, can jump and warp and gate and so on around the place without negative consequences. People on foot or in cars are a bit more vulnerable. So, I'm going to say that there's no such thing as a planetary jump gate in EVE. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

Dust Soldiers also have pretty heavy shielding on their dropsuits as well.

not starship heavy. And the thing about the radiation dose being fatal is from the in-DUST description of the item.
It really doesn't matter to a clone merc, the absolute longest their clone can usually expect to last in a battle is however long it takes for an MCC to blow up or be forced to disengage. So, fifteen, twenty minutes? If you're pretty much guaranteed to be dead of combat trauma inside the next quarter hour, a dose of radiation that will take three days to kill you is pretty much a non-event. Especially when "dead" has suffered a downgrade. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738
