I really want to try this game. I just returned to EVE after a very long break, and want to see this side of the game now too. I am also a veteran battlefield player, which seems the be the closest comparison as far as type of shooter Dust is. I've seem both plenty of hate and love for it, but not sure if buying a PS3 (used, not paying 300 for a new system for one game) would be worth it. At least Dust is F2P, or that's my undestanding. Does it have some pay to win aspect to it, ala PLEX? |

Not PLEX, but there is some controversy over the use of real money used to purchase Aurum.
And the Aurum is a bit different in Dust than it is in EVE. I remember Jita and CCP pretty much said "Aurum is going to be for cosmetics in EVE only" or at least that's how it looks.
In Dust, many claim that it gives you an Pay-2-Win advantage over the other team. However, all it allows you to do is unlock stuff sooner. Want some extra SP earlier? There are boosters you can pay using Aurum to help you increase the SP you earn. (Boosters in Dust are similar to Implants in EVE, not to be confused with the Boosters in EVE). Want to use a higher tier weapon before you get the skill to use it? Now you can.
But unlike other games with obvious P2W mechanics (I have heard of game where you can pay to unlock god-like vehicles or stats for your character and you could essentially stomp everyone else unless they had the same god-like vehicle/stats as you; don't know of any names, so unfortunately just hearsay until I can find some sources), Dust does NOT have a "Pay-2-Win" mechanic in it. Those SP that I've earned faster than you? You can still earn the same amount. That Advanced weapon I bought with Aurum? You can use your hard earned SP to buy the ISK version of it and gain a benefit of passive skills while I don't.
With the phrase "Pay-2-Win", it brings the connotation that people who purchase Aurum in Dust are able to use items and equipment that free players cannot. This is not the case. Whether a free player or someone who purchases AUR, you can access the same exact things across the board. The only difference is the AUR player will be able to access it sooner.
Another thing to note is that people will say that Aurum players have an unfair advantage because of BPOs. Yet another term from EVE but used slightly different in the Dust game, BPOs in Dust are Blueprints that have an unlimited supply. Think of it like this: In EVE, you attach a module to a ship, for example a Small Armor Repair. When your ship blows up, the Small Armor Repair most likely is blown up with it (though it may drop for loot/salvage). In Dust, you attach an Armor Repair to your suit and you die, you lose it. But let's say that BPO was not a schematic for building it, but rather a Small Armor Repair that you always kept with you, even if you lost your ship. On one hand pretty neat right? But isn't that a bit unfair? Maybe unbalanced?
The fact is, these BPOs are actually MILITIA grade items. These are modules that are sold for dirt cheap (can you say 100 ISK? 600 ISK?). Someone did the math and found that you would have to lose around 100 or even 1000 militia modules in order for it to really effect you. On top of that, these BPOs don't give you any real advantage in the battlefield. Would you go into a fight or a tournament with Civilian modules? Of course not, you'd use the best you could use or that you could equip.
(Sorry this is so long, I'm very adamant about Dust not being P2W.)
My advice would be to at least make a character and BORROW a PS3, whether that is having a friend lend you their system, or going over to a friend's to play it on their system for a while. Right now, Dust is in it's beginning stages and many people are frustrated with bugs, nerfbats, and crying on the forums (EVE had it too, just dig for 2003 or 2004 EVE posts; it's very intriguing to see how Dust players seem to echo what EVE players said about the game 10 years ago). I've seen plenty of hate and love for it as well. Only you can be the judge of that.
If you decide that you don't like it, at least you have a character made. Why that's important is that characters can earn passive skill points, much like how EVE pilots earn their skill points: a very unique trait not found in FPS games. Over time, I have no doubt Dust will get better and better, but if you decide to wait, you'll get to save your money on that PS3. Who knows? Maybe the price will drop further once the PS4 releases (oh and everyone is hoping it comes to the PS4; it's a silent chant many of us on Dust share :D). However, if you decide you like it, well, get that PS3! :D
If you do decide to get it, send me a mail, either to this guy or Kaze Eyrou (my Dust character). And yes, you can talk to people from EVE to Dust and vice versa. Even the voice chat. ;)
TL;DR: 1) Dust isn't P2W. 2) Borrow before deciding. |

Wait a bit, that's my advice.
Right now the new player experience is like a cheese grater to the face. You spend a bit of time in the Instant Battle Academy (10,000 WP; basically about 5-10 matches) and then it's straight to hell from there.
Best way I can describe it is it's like going through the new player tutorial in Eve Online and then getting jettisoned into a null-sec gate camp immediately afterward.
You'll notice a few similarities like the fitting system but it's pretty skewed when compared to Eve. There are no med-slots, just hi and low. Modules are a bit crazy as well with basically -EVERYTHING- going in the low slots and shield mods/damage mods going in the hi slots. So that takes some getting used it.
Be aware that specialization is the only thing that's going to save your life and even that isn't going to do you much justice as certain specializations are broken at the moment (Gallente Assault, for instance, has a 5% Shield Recharge rate per level and only 120 shields)
Another thing to keep in mind is that there are certain imbalances that go hand-in-hand with being thrown to the wolves right at the start and that is that there are some really stupid things that will kill you. Contact Grenades (basically grenades that explode as soon as they touch something) are only available to those that pay despite CCP Wolfman swearing up and down that there are ISK variants, however the only one available to non-paying players is a Prototype (basically Tech 2) with some hefty skill requirements and reduced splash radius.
So, yes. Wait. If you value not having to deal with constant annoying reasons for losing ISK through gear and not having any way of getting it besides bearing through the constant match maker grind, just wait. |

My teenage kids have both XBOX and PS -- as a result they play a wide assortment of games -- and DUST isn't getting what you would call "rave reviews" from either them or their friends.

Not Worth it. CCP let me down here, they should have released this game for the XBOX 360; much better online community. I Hope they fix this by releasing Dust 514 for the XBOX One. I'd bring my whole Corp on board if they did this. |

Honestly don't. I mainly bought my ps3 to play Dust514 and it's not worth it....
Matchmaking puts you against everyone with the best gear, all the people who don't play with friends have no clue what they're doing and just run around. CCP has very little sense of balance in dust atm, they purposely let a bug go through to recently launched patch because people wanted it to stay.
Just wait and buy a ps4 and play dust if it gets ported over, it might be fixed then, I don't want to write a massive passage but it's really not worth it unless you want to pay for constant boosters. |

You can blame Microsoft for that one. Sony was much more flexible in their dealings with CCP. Microsoft wasn't and demanded things like having to host the servers themselves etc.
Not only that but EVE is a one shard universe. To do what you're ranting about they'd need a wide open system that PS3 and Xbox players could plug into and maybe PC some day once CCP comes to their senses and realizes EVE on the console is going to be a dead end. |

well, as everyone said. it's not worth it atm.
i feel like the concept is just freakin' awesome.
but: - they made it exclusivly for ps3. < which - as we all know - is already outdated by the ps4 *lol* (so they may should've just delayed the release quite a bit or whatever) - basically right know it's just a common shooter, nothin' special at all. - to few players and because of that to few real battlefields from eve.
however. if u do wanna play with m/k keep in mind that there is a delay in between. i can't play with that so.. i mostly use the shockwave controller. or when i'm really bored i'll just use the move controller :P
btw: @ kenji -> tekken: revolution is a p2w game. (u get extra statpoints and stuff for ur characters to make em stronger even tho your lvl is way to low for those kind of stats) actually i gotta agree with u. i don't feel like dust is a p2w game, it's actually kinda fair in that case - as u already mentioned.

Not worth it.
CCP keep shifting skill requirements and you will log after each patch finding your fits no longer fit and modules magically unusable rendering all your already purchased assets useless.
If you think you might want to play it or could get a Playstation in the future: Start an account on a friends PS3. Create a toon - start the passive SP training, uninstall and in about a year or so when the SP have accumulated - re-install, log in and try it. (Likely by then on a PS4. - If it isn't completely dead by then)

I got a code from CCP for dust on fanfest 2012 and gave it to my brother. I played on his PS3 a few times. I didnt like it. I am not to versed in fps, but i did play counterstrike, halflife multiplayer, and several unreal variants, and even the old versions of those played better. My brother plays it still now and then because he is interested in the EVE lore and sometimes checks in if there has been an update, but after a match or so he always switches to battlefield because that game is much, much better. My nephews, who are fanatical fps players, consider Dust "lame".
I also hear stories here and there that Dust has basically tanked and that the game is close to dead. I wouldn't be suprised that, barring some wonder happens, Dust will be discontinued before the next fanfest.
Only thing they can do to save the game imho is to port it to a PC game, make a cool singleplayer campaign, and sell it on Steam for 19,99 in the hope it can be a niche fps multiplayer. There is promise in the link with EVE, and i think that still is a good idea, but in the current form i see no future for Dust 514. |

I bought a PS3 after I got the free Dust code at Fanfest 2012. Half a year later I sold the PS3 again. Thankfully it sold for close to the price I got it for.
I suggest you buy a second hand PS3 to try it with as if you need to sell it again all it will cost you is the price of the postage. Dominique Vasilkovsky Mashie Saldana Monica Foulkes |

It's not worth it to spend any money on atm imho.
The game is fun for the first few hours, but then you get of the 'academy' (newbie playground) and you'll get placed in matches with people who played the game for the better part of a year. Long story short, you'll get killed and it's not a nice experience.
CCP also doesn't seem to be very keen to fix big bugs. Explosions took months to work correctly and just now CCP made the awesome announcement that a really game breaking bug (when it occurs) causing players to get invisible is not going to get fixed asap, but will be fixed in the next upcoming patch. Which will be released begin of September.
Rumours on the internet have it it's being exploited already and so far CCP are keen on not doing anything about it.
Happy running around invisible.

Don't buy a PS3 for Dust as it is so unpolished and and a very unbalanced game. I thought with the Unreal Engine 3 and loving FPS games with the same engine I would enjoy this game. I was wrong. Only game I have played that I regret ever playing. Thank God it was free because if I had paid for this game I would done very bad things.
Buy a PS3 for the Blueray's and REAL FPS like COD and Battlefield or Unreal Tournament III for pick up and shoot people. |

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say YES.*
* Yes, but I'd recommend you buy a PS3 off craigslist or similar. I don't think Dust is worth "$300," but I do think it's worth the ~$60 I paid.
Also yes, BUT JOIN A CORP when you get into Dust. It is literally game changing. Dust is as harsh a place you can run into battle now. Gangs of high sp players pitted against the newest of noobs succumbing to being rolled on over and over and over in the public matches. Joining a corp allows you to easily squad up, and this in turn makes for better teamwork. Plus, you get better in-battle war point rewards. It makes the game less grindy when you have people there in the same boat as you.
Further, on Sept 3rd, CCP is releasing Uprising 1.4, which is going to have a lot of balancing changes, quality of life improvements, and most importantly, a redesigned matchmaking system. Hopefully it will cut down on the death squad-vs-newbie problem the current matchmaking system has. What's great is that Dust is made by CCP, and they're pretty good at "getting it right," even if it takes a while. Uprising 1.3 had several under-the-hood improvements as well as some things to make the game in a good place. Uprising 1.4 improves this, and on a one-patch-per-month cycle, CCP wants to be responsive to their fledgling FPS.
If you do nothing else--and this applies to everyone seeing this--MAKE YOUR DUST CHARACTER NOW (ASAP), though. You can start getting your passive SP even without logging in by creating a character. Imagine if you could have created your Eve character 10 years ago and it would have made millions of unallocated SP to spend! And FREE!
>> Just click on the link in my signature below and you can create your free PSN account, register for Dust and create your character. You get a free skillpoint booster and unlimited-use BPO Assault Rifle, too!
Step onto the battlefield, and you're already dead, born again at the end of the battle to live on and fight another day.
