so im a returning player and currently getting all t2'd out in my lil incursis, im looking far into the future o what I want to fly after my enyo.. this brings up a few questions...
would skipping cruisers and getting a brutix-> Astarte be a viable option?
if I fly nothing that uses missiles, is training to bomber worth the sp in missiles?
are t3s and with the upcoming hac changes deimos's very strong?
any other long term ships would be good for solo/small gang? I think staying sub battleship for now is prolly my best option...

Do you plan on flying stealth bombers at all? If so being able to use the torp launchers and bomb launcher are worth training.
T3s skills take all of like 12 days to train to usable levels. Train for HACs if you actually plan on flying it.
Brutix is ok but you might want to aim for the Talos. (Although it requires T2 Large Blasters)
Its all about where you want to go really. |

Yeah, its all about where you want to go. Talos is probably the best overall choice, as the Gallente cruisers are either niche, or underpowered, at least pending the upcoming buffs, though brutix/myrm are solid small gang/solo.
The only one of your ideas that is really bad is the Astarte. Command ships see little play outside the role of booster or brick tank FC ship, and the Gallente command ships are even more rarely used. |

I don't think you can call the brutix a good choice and the Astarte bad without contradicting yourself, since the Astarte is basically a better tanking brutix with more dps. I think you're referring to the eos as being the useless booster. The thing I tell people is: Battlecruiser and down all use the same weapons, Then BS is another path altogether. The exception now being the tier 3 BC's. Medium T2 guns are also a fairly fast goal to achieve. (Don't forget the support skills too, they are very important)
Me personally, I LOVE the Astarte. It has decent tank, can be fitted several ways, and can get 1000+DPS with medium gun tracking stats. It will chew through a lot of hit points and ppl don't usually primary it.
As mentioned, it's not very popular. Kinda spendy, so it's hard to undock it when you have cheaper BC's sitting around. Depends on your ISK comfort level really. |

The Astarte is used in solo pvp quite a bit. But its a long train for a not very special ship. |

I'd have to utterly disagree with you there, Gallente cruisers are some of the best around, the thorax and vexor can easily go head to head with any other cruiser, and even the celestis has things going for it with a few interesting fits.

Unless your planning on going with rails, this wont make a huge difference, and for Gallente ships it would only give you much better options.
OP I'd strongly advise you to skill up the cruiser line before jumping into BC's, since the buffs T1 cruisers are the best they have ever been. Additionally most skills will be needed by both (med weapons etc), and puts you on a path to jump into HAC's / Recons / Logi and T3. It also helps you decide which type of combat you prefer, something that AF's cant provide. That, and if your still a bit rusty on PVP, you'd get far more fights and lose far less ISK flying cruisers than learning cruiser sized combat in a BC.

I wish I had stayed battlecruiser and below from the start. and avoided missiles
frigate T2: covops/interceptors/assault with relevant supports spec V'd cruisers T2: hac, recon, hic, logi... with relevant supports spec V'd (scratch that, maybe hic later) battlecruiser T2: command ships with leadership
battleships are just... disappointing, in my opinion, considering the dps does not scale with sig radius, and battleship guns with their disadvantaged sig resolution in the turret/tracking formula. Solo nothing (IMO) outperforms the Vexor, in terms of PVP capability for ISK and time invested.
But that's a somewhat specific skillset to fly well (Drone Interfacing 5, tech 2 heavy and medium drones, Gallente Cruiser 5, tech 2 medium blasters).
Small gang (assuming you feel you can trust your gang), your gang will likely gain the most from you flying a Phobos (for the infinite point in high/low, or the bubbles in null) or an Oneiros.
An enemy is just a friend that you stab in the front. |
