I just came back from a 3yr break. I guess with some old skills that were removed I have ~2mil SP immediately available. I am trying to decide between a raven or Dominix to run lvl 4 missions. I only have 138mil ISK so while I can have the skills for a raven in about 24hrs I can't afford to buy one,
If I train a sentry Dominix I can have everything but T2 sentry drones in about 3 days. Then it is a 33d train fir T2 sentries. The big appeal to the dominix is #1 I like the dominix a lot, #2 it is WAY cheaper. I have about 10hrs per week to play so I can't afford to replace many lost ravens. Searching the forums indicates the Dominix is the safest (and perhaps most boring) level 4 mission runner.
So: Are T2 sentries necessary for the dominix? Am I better off to run lvl 3 complexes and fit a Raven?
Thank you in advance guys!
Here are the 2 fittings I'm considering: Dominix Raven |

For quite a while I ran a dominix without sentries at all just because I couldn't stand there sedentary nature. By the time I began to use them regularly I already had T2 sentry skills so I guess T1 would be ok for now, especially now with the NPC AI changes that eat drones. I would make a sig but it would frighten and offend you. |

Just fit a remote Sensor booster, lock on of your drones and use the sebo on it, this will automatically make AI only try and kill you. |

I actually haven't used drone ships since well before the AI change.
I bought a Tengu.

Dominix works fine for lvl 4 missions with mjd + faction drones (for me it is: gardes+bouncers, missioning in angel and serpentis area). Only thing I had problems with was Angel Extravaganza bonus room. |

Tech II sentries aren't strictly necessary, but they're a major improvement over Tech I drones in terms of both range and damage (over and above the damage buff you get from training Sentry Drone Interfacing V). Faction sentries kind of split the difference, lacking the range advantage and not hitting quite as hard as the T2's, but they are actually more durable than T2's - I've seen a Caldari Navy Warden catch full battleship aggro in a mission and simply tank it while I went to recover. If you cannot use tech 2 sentries, faction ones are a suitable alternative and only 5m ISK each. Tech 1 sentries are garbage.
85-90% of the performance and they take a lot less time to train into.
I used to be a mission grinder type (grew out of it :) ) and I did it with a Domi with a tech 2 tank, sentries, and swapping out the sentries for light drones (for frigates out of web range) or heavy drones (for anything at all in web range, two tech 2 webs will slow them down a LOT.)

if you don't like the 'sentry playstyle' don't use it eve's a game, play to have fun not what other people say you 'have to do'
highest dps drone is not a sentry drone its a heavy drone

Thanks everyone! I guess one more question in case anyone reads this far: Is the Navy Raven really that superior to the Dominix in the long run? I'm seeing the 2bil price tag and im not understanding what makes it so much more valuable than the Dominix. |

That particular RNI fit you linked in the OP is rather non-standard for a faction battleship. What makes the RNI and other faction battleships so great and so valuable in lvl 4 missions (and hence their high price tag) is their ability to fit a massive gank to the point where only a minimum tank is required. This allows you to blitz through missions much faster than in any regular battleship like the Domi and thus increase your isk/hr significantly.
So yes, they are definitely worth it, so long as you fit them right and are very knowledgeable of all the lvl 4 missions so you don't ever lose it to a silly mistake. |

Oh I see. Is there a more standard load out you can link me? I'm just looking at the highest rated fits at BattleClinic. |

Despite popular belief, Battleclinic isn't the best of places to go to for fits. It used to be a good place, but it hasn't been so in a long time now.
Anyway, for the CNR take a look at this fit: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Raven_Navy_Issue_(Fitting)#Navy_Raven_a_la_Liang I don't fly missible boats, but it seems to be fitted the way I fit my Mach for levels 4, i.e - max gank with just enough tank to last long enough for you to shoot everything to bits. And don't misunderstand, you WILL shoot things to bits fast enough that they simply don't have the time to apply dps to your small tank. Just be sure you are well experienced with flying lvl 4s in a standard battleship first, preferrably even a gank fit on that battleship so you can see what it's like. The idea is that you pulse your tank when needed, and use batteries as required, but your focus is on taking out the highest DPS targets first.
Here's a regular Raven fit based on the one above http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Raven_%28Fitting%29#Raven_a_la_Liang |

I'd try using faction sentry drones before throwing all that sp into T2 sentry drones. I think t2 sentry drones are worth training, but they might not be worth throwing a large portion of 2mil unallocated sp at. Also I find sentry drones limiting in some missions. Cruise missiles just got buffed, and the raven has an extra mid slot instead of 2 utility highs so overall the raven is better than it was imo.
a micro jump drive can be a get out of jail free card, at 100km most npcs can't hit you and if they do it will usually only be with missiles. for the most part I prefer to not use one as I've grown accustomed to brawling in missions and can survive without one and can put something else in that slot. but it will be a great tool to make things easier as you (re)learn the missions and ships. You can trust me, I have a monocole |

t2 Sentries are like t2 guns...
They offer more damage and better stats than t1, but you can bling them out (faction/navy) to get similar performance (although not identical).
