Edited by: Hurg on 19/12/2005 18:03:19 Edited by: Hurg on 19/12/2005 18:02:27 I played EVE for almost 2 years before taking a break at the start of 2005 and trying WoW. A game which I've now been playing for about 10 months.
Like several people have said in this thread, WoW cannot and should be compared directly with EVE. They are diametrically opposed in terms of what they are trying to achieve and how they are trying to achieve it. Both, imo, have massive strengths and appeal but they are I think, aimed at quite different audiences.
I'm still playing WoW on pretty much a full time basis but have started to dip back into EVE recently. If I had to pin down the single most significant difference between the two I'd have to agree with what others have said, in that it's death. In WoW, death has pretty much zero consequences. Apart from a possibly inconvenient corpse run and a bit of an equipment repair bill, it's meaningless. In EVE, well, I don't need to tell you lot what it means to loose a ship and get podded. Suffice to say that the adreniline rush from EVE when going into combat, be it 1v1 or a large scale fleet battle simply cannot be matched in WoW. It must be one of EVE's biggest strengths but at the same time, it is imho, one of it's greatest weaknesses too.
I had lots of reasons for taking a break from EVE, one of the significant one's being that I just could not be a**ed with the pain of constantly acquiring new ships and equipment after a death (I fought for XETIC against Curse in the last 3 or so months at then end of 2004. I lost quite a few ships). It was brought back to me a couple of days ago when, having decided to relocate some of my assets, I realised that I had a bunch of ships that needed fitting out. The kicker was that I just couldn't face the inevitable trawling around multiple systems to get all the bits I needed, ship them back to my home station and then haul them to my new "home". Instead, I decided to log out and go do something less tedious
Don't get me wrong, I still love EVE, or maybe I love the idea of playing EVE but some of the stuff involved in getting combat or operational ready is just putting me off atm. I hope to return eventually
