I do think they're currently busy trying to make it so 20k people want to keep playing.

It's going up nearly 1K a month at the moment so I guess CCP are frantically trying to get some headroom to allow for this.
I await the first fleet battle with 2000 ships on each side!
5 years time we'll have 500gb internet connections, CCP in the top ten supercomputers league and 5 million players online in a single sharded universe all shouting "wtf CCP, nerf the motherships so I can kill em in my frigate"

Many people thought that the infrastructure didn't cope too well with such a high number of people online at once. And really, what does it matter how many are logged on if they can't actually play?
I would think CCP would like to make things more stable before they start bragging.

Thats to be expected with the free-trial period. Its what that figure does after the trial is over that makes the difference.

Whilst things might be 'less than optimal' at the moment, at least CCP recognise this, and are working towards making improvemements. Considering the size and scale of RmR, I don't think they've done a bad job at all.
If you want to see how NOT to release a patch/expansion, ask someone who was playing Anarchy Online when funcom released their Shadowlands expansion... truly horrible. They were fixing bugs for 6 months afterwards.

I would guess the marketing department has something up their collective sleeves for this. If not, announcements will be made soon.

I hope they don't announce it. We will see another hundred "20k and Eve can't handle it" threads on the forum if they do.

tbh im still sceptical it was not just a bug that caused the counter on the log in page to register people loging in but never log them out.
with all the other stuff thats been on the blink it would't suprise me

I think it would be much better to crow about this when the servers are stable at this level of occupancy :) -
