Good evening all,
Firstly thank you for taking the time to read this.
I havn't been active in EvE for the best part of 6 months and only had time to pay for 3 months prior to that roughly.
Most of that time was spent learning the basics of PvP in RvB, and I had a fantastic time.
NOW I want to go solo in low sec ( I think )
I expect to die ALOT and don't expect to take any ships with me but its the learning curve I'm looking for.
I'm either going to fly a Dessie or Frig due to costs etc and low skill points.
My options are, Kessie which is where I've had most experience but I feel is a bit weak for what I'm looking for.
Talwar which I have NEVER flown before but from what I've read is a good light missile kiter with good speed which is exactly what I'm looking for.
Corax just because I've used it once or twice and I have higher trained skills towards Caldari but from my reading they are not overly great due to speed etc?
Any advice on ships would be great and any options as to where to base from. Currently sitting in Jita with about 40 Kessies but no fittings (all from previous time I played, these can be sold though as I think a Dessie may be a better solo option as will allow me to target Dessies and Frigs alike)
Thank you for your time.

Consider LML Condor to start out if you like to kite.
If you care about sec status and would like to also be able to make money consider joining FW. |

Definitely make use of the faction warfare zones. You can go into a complex, and orbit at your optimal range around the beacon, giving you a great advantage on anyone who warps in on you.
As far as the kestrel goes (i'm assuming that's what kessie means) That is one of my favorite ships personally. I prefer fitting it as a brawler with a massive shield tank. But that's with my maxed out frigate skills and damage projection with rockets. As someone previously mentioned a condor might suit you better because it's easier to disengage if you get into a fight you know you can't win.
Remember. whoever can dictate range is also the one who gets the option of running if things go bad. And it's far easier to dictate range in a Condor than a Kestrel. |

Dual web Kestrel owns a large majority of frigates.
My corp does a lot of solo and small gang work. Message me in game about corp or the fit and good luck either way! |

In Faction Warfare, 1v1s don't stay 1v1 very long. If you don't have backup, you win fast, or you die. Keep that in mind.
For that reason I do not like frigates. You don't have enough DPS to kill opponents before their friends get on grid. Destroyers are OK but are really cold to cruisers, which are my preferred ships in 1v1 engagements.
A cruiser should run from a battlecruiser that isn't an ABC, and try to avoid Intercepters (easier said than done), but should be able to beat just about anything else.
An enemy is just a friend that you stab in the front. |

If you expect to die a lot then buy a variety of frigs your skills are the highest.
Play in EFT while reading Jita local (yeah), try to sieve some fits on battleclinic, fit few ships, go down to FW zone, enlist or not, and just let it happen.
Try to find a system with low local, sit in plexes, dscan like you want the arthritism CCP is funding us (auto d-scan, please, guise) and pick your fights. Soon you will find out what you can and what you cannot kill. To be honest, this is the best part of it and you want us to take it away from you.
Whichever ship you plan to use - learn it. Whichever ship you will be facing - learn it on the fly (you should have at least 20-30s until they show up in your plex. If you join FW then consider the faction frigs as they are quite good and versatile and when you pay for them with LPs they cost approx 1,5M a piece.
As for the cruiser buddy above - I don't know where you are flying but except for one silly thorax yesterday who got owned by two frigs (use your brain in those fights, OP) we don't see a lot of cruisers - you won't get a decent fight, and two smart frigs can own you. UNLESS you find another solo cruiser, which is one in a day tops.

Don't listen to the cruiser guy. solo cruisers don't work very well in FW, if for no other reason than they can't get into the novice or small plexes.
The rocket Kestrel is a decent ship, but you need to know what you are doing with it, it is no IWin button.
The Talwar can be played as a short range brawler or long range kiter. It is lethal in either configuration, if it can engage at it's relevant optimal range. But flip that around and it gets pwned. It also can't get into the novice plexes.
The way to go to learn solo PvP in low sec is definitely T1 frigates and utilize the FW plexes. I would suggest joining one of the FW corps, you can still go solo, but having the option of getting involved with fleet ops can't be bad, you don't have to attend them. But if you were involved in RvB, I'd imagine you would be that way inclined. I too followed the RvB -> FW route, it is a natural progression IMO.
What ship to fly? Well only you can decide that. Try out a few cookie cutter fits and see which one you like. You will lose plenty of ships solo, but nothing says they all have to be the same ship type. In time though you will learn that Eve is a game of paper, rock, scissors and different ships (or fits) suit different engagements.
For example a few days ago (10th Aug around 1330hrs - look me up on Battleclinic). I was sat in plex in a blaster fit Comet when a dual rep Incursus came in. It wasn't a good match up for me and I didn't play it well, if I had pulled range I might have at least got out, instead I died ingloriously. However, I reshipped into a Slasher and easily beat him in round 2.

Seconding the dual web 400mm plated Rocket Kessie as an awesome fit with a wide range of viable targets.
Range control is everything! And, a lot of peeps will come at you with EMP ammo assuming you're shield tanked.
You will quickly learn what you can and cant beat.
And yea, stick with Frigs generally, you'll get twice the fights. True facts: The Tarzier survives in the forest by disguising itself as a teddybear having a colonoscopy. |

The single most important aspect of PvP in low-sec is living there. The people who base out of high-sec and try to do their PvP in low consistently get crushed by locals. Low-sec is a mindset, an attitude, an outlook.
While it's not necessary, I'd highly recommend hanging out with a group of pilots with similar motivations. Justified Chaos is the first corporation that comes to mind. "Today's noob is tomorrow's cold-blooded killer." - Juan Rayo, Founder, JUSTK. |

Ahh fresh blood. Welcome to the party OP. Frigate pvp is something of an art as I look at it. Anyone can paint, but only the most dedicated will paint well after weeks and weeks of practice. Anyways, on topic, the Kestrel is a great frigate for solo pvp. As suggested, the dual web 400mm plate variant is nasty to go up against, as it can control range and hold you at an arm's length whilst pummeling you into oblivion. Another fantastic, and rather unexpected, frigate setup is the 200mm plate rocket Condor. You may see man of us suggesting to armour tank your beloved Caldari boats, and that is because midslots win battles. He who can **** the most with his enemy's ability to fight the wins the war. The 200mm plated Condor does so very well. With 4 mid slots you can fit the holy trinity of tackle, prop/scram/web. This last spare slot allows you to fit whatever your heart desires. The most common option is a tracking disruptor, which allows you to kite outside your enemies turret range, or speed tank under their guns. A step up from the Kestrel and Condor, the Caldari Navy Hookbill takes the midslot game to an entirely new level. With the ability to fit an armour tank, the holy tackle trinity, and TWO extra ewar modules, it is nigh unbeatable by most other frigates. So for yourself up some plated Kestrels and Condors, move into a FW lowsec system, and have a blast. When you feel comfortable enough or have gathered enough isk reserves to regularly lose them, upgrade to Hookbills.

Kestrel is a fine choice. I also like the 400 plate rocket fit but with a tracking disrupt/web instead of dual web |

But do not think that ANYTHING we post here is an instant win solution. It is a complex game and you can do everything if you got brains for it... or lose anything if you are careless.

Thank you for all the replies guys its greatly appreciated!!
Believe me I know it's going to be hard work and an on going learning curve, that's something I'm looking forward to! I'll work as hard as any.
For the time being I've relisted into RvB to get my feet wet with a little bit of quick PvP and to try a couple of different fits, then I'm going to look into going solo in FW before going full time in low sec.
My first priority will be to train up a trading alt to trade at Jita and deliver ships for me.
Thank you for your time and fantastic advice. Please keep any more info coming And anyone who's said to contact you in game believe me I will be over the weekend ;)
Thank you all again.
