Hi, I just recently finished the exploration tutorial and I found myself interested in exploration, but I am still confused by it.
I assume the best way to go about this is focus on certain anomalies and then just work on those? I like the hacking minigame, I have plenty of combat runnin missions, so I thought I d focus on relic sites or data sites. Is that how it goes or am I expected to be jack of all trades in order to earn some isk?
Also, I like to fly caracal, I just like the ship design etc... is caracal usable for exploration?
Thanks for your answers. |

Well, a Caracal isn't good for professional (data/relic) sites. You're much better off in a Heron or Buzzard with their in-built scanning and hacking bonuses.
A Caracal can work for combat sites (specifically 3/10 and 4/10s). Ultimately you'd actually want to move to a Cerberus (T2 version of the Caracal) for high sec combats. |

So how does it work? Is it that explorers focus on a single type of anomalies ?
And high sec cobats, I thought that the higher the sec of system the easier the combat anomaly, no?
Also what does it mean if combat site is 3/10 or 4/10?
Thanks |

I Google "Eve exploration guide" and this came up among many others: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3167689 "Measure Twice, Cut Once." |

In the video he goes through the exploration tutorial. I've done that. I have more specific questions. |

the types of sites are generally referred to as professional and combat sites.
most focus on a specific type of site, its difficult to fit a ship so that it can do data/relic (professional) sites well and also do combat sites. as a general rule the x/10 does show the difficulty level and you are more likely to find a 4/10 in .5 and .6 systems. I think i've found 4/10 s in .8 before though. |

Thank you for your answer.
Now I have much better understanding that I have a choice between "professional" and combat sites.
So the lower the sec the harder the combat site.
What is the reward for combat sites? In proffesional sites you get the can opened and you loot the goods, is there something similar in combat sites, or is it simply whatever bounty you get for killing and whatever you drop/salvage from wrecks? |

Alright, clarification time.
First, combat sites are not the things that appear on your system scanner without probing as green. They are red; you have to probe them and there's little way to know if you have a combat, professional site, or wormhole that you're zeroing in on without at least launching probes at it first.
Professional sites are divided into three categories, only two of which really matter to you right now: relic and data. Both lack rats and both require the hacking minigame to get loot out of the abominable wall of spam containers. Data sites get you datacores and decryptors for invention. Relic sites get you salvage and rig BPCs. Either has a (small) chance of faction pos mod blueprints and a rather larger chance of spawning BPCs for certain modules that don't have BPOs associated with them (ancillary armor reps, ancillary shield boosters, micro jump drives, and target spectrum breakers).
Combat sites come in two broad categories: rated and unrated. Rated sites have a rating (hence 3/10, 4/10, etc). Unrated sites don't. Rated sites guarantee an overseer spawn that will at least drop overseer's personal effects. Unrated sites have no such guarantee but may escalate. Either escalations or rated sites can drop deadspace modules (and both can also drop faction modules, but it's the deadspace stuff you're actually after in combat sites). Each rated site is associated with a specific class of deadspace item: 1/10s drop frigate c-types, 3/10s drop frigate a-types, 6/10s drop cruiser a-types, etc. Escalations are also linked with a specific class of deadspace item.
In high sec, you get 1-4/10s and a vanishingly small shot at 5/10s. In low sec, you'll find 4-6/10s. In null, you find 6-10/10s. It doesn't matter whether you're in a 1.0 sec system or a .5 sec system; high sec sites spawn in any high sec. Same for low, and more or less the same holds true in null.
1/10s only allow frigates, 2/10s only allow destroyers and smaller, 3/10s only allow cruisers and smaller (no T3s), 4/10s allow battlecruisers and smaller (no T3s), and 5/10s and higher allow all ships in. T2 and faction variants of hulls are allowed in their respective sites, so the aforementioned Cerberus could get into 3/10s and 4/10s in high sec.
Does that help? |

Yes very much! Thank you a lot.
Which ones should I focus on if I wanna make some solid ISK? Are the combat sites generally more profitable than professinal sites or vice versa? Or is it balanced? |

Highest payout sites in high sec are 4/10s -- and as a result everyone seems to swarm to them. If you're running 4/10s in Caldari or to a lesser extent Minmatar space you can pretty much count on at least one person coming into a site you've found and trying to get to the loot before you.
Otherwise, 3/10s can be nice (A-types can be very nice modules) but scanning for them is annoying. Moving out of Caldari/Minmatar space is probably a good idea until you get your scanning skills down and have a nice ship to compete with.
And someone else will have to tell you how high sec professional sites pay out right now; I'm pretty much dedicated to low sec. I suspect that unless you're in Sansha space high sec mags relics are worthless and high sec radars datas are meh all around. Decryptors seem to have at least stabilized though... |

I have encountered new problem now. I have heron fit for professional sites, and the problem I have that the system I go through either have no sites or mainly combat/wormholes. Very rarely Data/Relic sites. Which is frustrating because I end up running aorund system 90% of the time not doing anything but looking for data / relic site. |

That's normal. You never find what you're looking for. Except when you do.
Just keep scanning. More systems faster will get you the highest odds of finding what you want.
Also -- and I'm not sure if it's relevant -- get out of Caldari space. |

I guess I am in caldari space, where should I head out from there for better chances?
Preferrably still high sec, I have +3 implants I dont want to lose currently. |

Anywhere else. If you have standings restrictions head to Amarr space. Otherwise... anywhere else, really. There's plenty of high sec out there to work with.
Hell, take a look at dotlan. Find somewhere that looks like it's low traffic and just go there. It's exploration, right? |

Is that because caldari space is extremely crowded or something? |

Crowded, yes. Jita causes that. But specifically crowded with explorers (who are looking for 4/10s, but they'll take professional sites when they can't find anything else).
Now, crowded can be good: there's lots of turnover so re-scanning the same system isn't a bad idea. But in general I'd go for lower population -- and specifically fewer people with scan probes out -- while you decide whether racing other explorers for sites is your thing or not. |

Yeah but then I have the problem that when I am in combat ship I cant find combat sites and vice versa, which makes it really frustrating experience. |
