holas space heads.
I am considering blowing my xmas bonus on a flash new monitor, actually my bonus probably covers the cable and the plug but hey.
Question is will EVE look ok on this baby
DELL Ultrasharp 2405FPW 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - - 1920 x 1200 (WUXGA+) Optimum Resolution - 16.7 Million Colours - 1000:1 Contrast Ratio - 16ms Response Time - 500 cd/m2 Brightness
The machine's graphics are a pair of XFX GeForce 7800GTX Extreme XXX Edition 512MB in SLI configuration.
Will EVE run at 1920x1200? Will it distort if I run it in 1600x1200?
Anyone out there got any reccomendations on whether to go for this monitor or an alternative one?
Advice appreciated.
Cheers.

I happen to be eyeing that same monitor, my biggest concern was the refresh rate though and the ability to run eve in widescreen mode (sans black bars of course). 16ms sounds a bit high, and I don't know how the EVE hud will react to really big widescreen resolutiona, will I be able to read anything? :O

Valid concerns, its a lot of dollar. Theres an 8ms model, the Belinea 102035W 20.1" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 1680 x 1050 (WUXGA) Optimum Resolution - 16.7 Million Colours - 800:1 Contrast Ratio - 8ms Response Time - 300 cd/m2 Brightness
which is 20.1". Still a vast monitor by anyones standards but lacks that 'Gargantuan' vibe the 24" model would deliver on nicely.
Anyone else want to chuck their hat in the ring and give us some advice?

My dell laptop has a 1920x1200 panel on it and had no problems running eve at that res, except for the fact that the screen on the laptop is only 15.4" so fonts were tiny.
My laptop has a Nvidia 5650Go in it and that managed to run the game at a steady 25-30fps at that res too, so you should have no probs at all!

For your screen mode, I run on my laptop widescreen Eve and when i choose my resolution to 1280x800 the game run fine and the picture is perfect. no problem reading chat or anything. Eve will adjust itself with the resolution youre monitor can support.

On LCDs response time is totally dependent on the LCD technology used. Certain LCDs can get away with >40ms response time without any ghosting effects. Others need <8ms to avoid ghosting.
Personally I don't like LCDs since they have reduced image quality in anything less than their native resolution (thought it has come a long way from the early days).
I'm not totally up to date with the LCD types used in computer monitors. I'd say check the web for professional reviews. I know there was one review out there that discussed the various LCD types, and I think one of their top monitors had a response time of 15-20ms or so, but due to it's type it had no ghosting.
Key idea is to look for reviews online, especially comparison reviews that are up-to-date. That'll let you know more regarding color saturation (usually an issue with LCDs), ghosting, etc.
And EVE supports non-4:3 resolutions just fine, and you'll be more than capable of running EVE at the max resolution of the monitor. (specially with that rig you're running ) |

I'm running two Viewsonic VX910's with 16ms Response Time. They work great for Eve. One Character per LCD. I have no ghosting or blurring and the images are wonderfully crips and well saturated. I run both at their Native Resolutions and they are wonderful! =D

I have that Dell monitor. There was a post asking about it before Christmas and it had 2-3 pages worth of players that also had it.
I play at 1920x1200 and it plays great and looks even better. Text is still too small for my tastes but everything can be read if set to the largest settings. The new RMR font makes certain things unreadable but the monitor doesn't have anything to do with that.
If you can afford it...I doubt you'd be disappointed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Still working on |

Edited by: Virt Orumovski on 04/01/2006 23:51:09 I have the 2405FPW. EVE running on it in 1920x1200 with antialiasing on is a beautiful sight. (Actually I'm now running in a window at lower resolution, but only for the convenience of being able to easily alt-tab, drag it around etc.)
It runs fine at that resolution (framerate a bit low but perfectly playable - with your graphics card(s!) it will be smooth as butter). No black bars - make sure the 'Widescreen' option is unticked to ensure that.
The response time is fine. Like Somai said, the number quoted is almost meaningless - I have a quality 25ms LCD which is just fine for fast gaming, movies etc. The Dell is too.
Only disadvantage of the 2405FPW is that it (or at least my one) suffers from noticeable colour banding in dark tones, which can slightly spoil some of EVE's lovely starfields and nebulae. OTOH the vastness of space really demands a huge widescreen monitor to do it justice, and with that much screen space juggling all those interface windows becomes more bearable...
Edit: Dell often do pretty decent discounts on their monitors if you buy at the right time. I got mine for 66% of what it's currently selling for, including tax and delivery.
