I'm considering changing the way I charge for my site, and wanted to get peoples opinions first. I realise this has nothing to do with this forum, but most of my users read in here, so its the best place for it.
A bit of history..
Allthough my costs for the server the site runs on are met by myself(And I'm quite happy to pay them) the amount of time I spend maintaining the site and not playing eve is growing rapidly. So to try and gain some of this time back I made the site pay only, with a flat rate of 10mil ISK per month for large corps, and 1mil for corps with less than 10 members, with a 2 month discount for paying yearly.. The ISK from the site just about makes up for the time lost playing the game. I later lowered this to 5mil for large corps when several people suggested it as a more sensible price.
My original plan was to offer the site free, but this would mean neglecting the maintenance of the site, as I can't spend 4 or 5 hours a week on it if I need to be off killing rats ;)
My solution.
So I am thinking to remove all the subscription costs, giving all members a full refund and putting Google Adsense on the site as discretely as possible. What would you think of this? And if anyone from CCP has recovered from new years yet, is this considered earning profit from the data feeds if I spend the money on time cards to be converted into ISK? Does anyone think it's un-ethical?

Edited by: Lufio II on 05/01/2006 11:53:49 Well, I personally got one problem with AdSense... it surely picks out EVE-Related Ads to show on your EVE-Related site. And it's a sure bet that it will show links to various isk sellers almost every time...

I don't know what your site is about, but you're not allowed to charge for anything that is based on information gained from CCP.

The site is http://eve.enkidu.cx, you can login as test and test.
I am not, nor have I ever, or will I ever charge real money for my site. I have charged ISK, which I believe is acceptable, and I am checking if a site using the data feeds can have advertising on it. I believe it's acceptable as I am not making money from the data itself, the value of the site comes from the functionality I have built into it.
What I really wanted from CCP is some clarification on the "Not for profit" thing. We are not allowed to sell the data itself(Like in an object browser), but can we sell a service we provide based on the data?(Like my site)

I'm interested in this also. I thought that selling information like this for ISK was allowed (and even encouraged). Of course we're not allowed to sell it for real money, but can we get some clarification on the issue of selling information on websites for ISK, please?

An interesting point, eve-i used information scraped from EVE, and they asked(And received) quite a lot of donations towards there server costs. This is maybe a breach of CCPs rules, but if its not, then advertising on a site using the data feeds should also be allowed as its a method of paying the site owners costs that does not force users to pay up.

I had to do some poking of various people. Charging real life money is completely forbidden of course. You can only charge in game ISK, but not for the information. However, you can charge ISK for access to your website, using the in game browser.
I don't think putting ads on your site is a problem considering most if not all of the fansites does it.

AdSense is like useless for EVE sites, since there's about only ONE real EVE ad (CCP's) the rest are ISK/Account seller ads which doesn't look too good when you try to run a fan site.
But it's all up to you of course.

I thought it might be something like that. But I just want all the people that can't afford my site to get to use it, as I believe its a very usefull tool. Any ideas? :P Enkidu Production Manager

I didn't know the IGB could do this yet. Where can we find the technical details as to how to go about doing this?

I think he had an over-comma'ing there..

The IGB is pretty much useless unless your site is text only, or has little to no interactive content.
Most sites I visit with the IGB never display any content, so I never even bother with it.

There's an ability to transfer ISK in the IGB? When did this happen? ---- Nifty |

The IGB works fine, if you know how to program to standards. And no, you can't transfer ISK in the IGB, just a bit of mis-communication. Enkidu Production Manager
