Hello everyone,
tldr: does CCP allow youtube partners to monetize EVE Online videos and if so can we get a link or forum post we can link to youtube when they ask for a link to the permission?
For those that want to know more about this, what's the problem? Small youtubers or youtubers that choose not to join a network go through a vetting process for the monetization of videos. Youtube will often ask for a link to the permission from the developer allowing it.
Well why don't you join a network then? As far as i understand it networks don't have deals with the developers but only have a deal with youtube that circumvents the vetting process. This means that when a company decides to enforce it's copyright you can get strikes and banned allthough you are with a network. SEGA did this for their music and even large youtubers like Totalbiscuit received strikes and had lots of problems.
I want to make clear i understand CCP or any dev is in no way obligated to allow this and i would fully respect that decision. I'm just a small youtuber who loves making EVE videos among others and only monetize videos about games for which i have the permission bookmarked or on mail. Having followed the discussion around this with final fantasy XIV where Square Enix ended up allowing it after realising this is something that's mutually beneficial i'm hoping to get a link for EVE aswell for myself and anyone else that wants to make EVE vids.
I have just a small channel (youtube.com/delonewolf) but i think it would be very cool if i could pay for my sub by making videos.
If you're wondering if any other companies allow this, here are a few examples: valve, chivalry, mount and blade special permission |

Pretty sure Scott Manley or Jonny Pew could answer you on this (not that I want to deluge them with similar questions), they're just my first thoughts of people with longstanding YT content of Eve & almost certainly Partnership. There's also tens of active series, hundreds of personal vlog/BRs, and thousands of clips that CCP seem to be fine with as usual YT content. Your biggest issue will be the music you use afaik.
I think your community contact person would be CCP Dolan. |

Sometimes youtube doesn't do the check and then you can monetize a video till they start putting them back under review, i'd rather not take the chance without explicit permission from the developer. |

Networks don't have special permissions with the developers, people did videos about sega games while under networks, they still got strikes and shut down in some cases when sega decided to enforce the copyright on the music.
I can only hope CCP is willing to provide a public policy so everyone is clear on where they stand, it would be unfortunate if people would get strikes for making a video with the 'below the asteroids' music in the background. |

I can't give you a clear answer right now, as I don't think this has come up before per say. But I'll raise this to our legal team for them to review and see if this isn't something they can take care of. We love EVE videos, after all Just a random dude in Team Security. |

thank you! it's good to know this might get looked at.
This is indeed a new development in gaming but not one that will go away i feel, streaming and youtube about games have all but replaced TV for me. I also understand that for some games (single player story driven games like the batman games or mass effect) a developer might choose not to allow this, for an MMO though i feel it can only be beneficial to the game, the players and the video makers. That said i also believe most gamers would respect the decision either way but what we really want is a clear message on the matter.

If EvE video makers get paid = more videos.
More good EvE videos on youtube = more people trying EvE.

Depends who is doing the paying. I know I am not going to pay to watch them, and there are many others who feel the same. I get its your time and effort so you should get something, but there is tons of free good stuff out there. I suspect Garmin lost quite a few followers when he went with abadon and the whole EVE is real pay to watch stuff.. but that's just my opinion.

Giving the subject is about YouTube, I am assuming the ads will be paying.
Just to let everyone know how much YouTube video makers really make. Without a 3rd party membership the video maker gets $100 USD for 100,000 views. Less if they are with a 3rd party (like myself). The reason why so many people are with 3rd party is for protection and maybe free stuff (music, promoting your stuff, etc). Google is famous for screwing people who aren't making $50k. Basically they look at a good month as. Oh you made a lot this month, you must have been click bombing your videos.
Anyways, I'm finding the lifetime limit to most gaming videos views with luck are arounds 100-300k ($100-$300). Obviously this doesn't come at once, and in some cases there is some videos that get a lot more than that. The only videos that you really see people get over $1k per video is famous people and videos of people doing something really really really stupid. Most people who make gaming videos are doing it because they are already playing the game, and/or they are offsetting the cost of gas, food, the game, or something.
Basically what I'm getting at is don't jump in and think you can make a living off of this, unless if you are in a 3rd world country. At which point you should think that.
Anyways, I think the legal team should say something like if you are making money only with advertisements then it's OK. However, CCP should get a cut if you are charging people to watch your video (giving people would actually do that). Hell is around every turn. It's your choice to go in it or not. They make it hard for themselves. That isn't our problem though.
All they really have to do is tell youtube that it isn't ok to monetize eve online content. |

One of the problem could be music.
If you check Eve related video on Youtube some with the most views are Eve music with a random space image. Monetization in that case is a little bit problematic considering Music is not the Youtuber property and the image isn't as well.
That said this case should be quite simple but what about people doing videos or commentary with Eve music in the background then?
These legal rules takes time and thinking I guess...

Depending if there is any royalty on the music will dep on the answer. Basically if there is any royalty then most likely they aren't doing something legal (giving they don't have permission). Giving you have some licensing like from http://www.audiomicro.com/ will depend on who you can use the music. http://www.audiomicro.com/buying-music#13 It's fair game giving there isn't a royalty on the pics, video, music, etc. Hell is around every turn.
