Good day everyone. Yesterday was my first day of trying to pirate. I spent just over 3 hours searching low sec systems for prey. Several systems had 4 to 6 people in them but I checked every belt and could find nothing. I eventually got tired and killed some belt rats for something to do. So if anyone could lend some advice on how and or where to hunt I would really appreciate it.
Thanks Fenius Black

When I go out to pirate, i work my way thur every belt for about 20jumps. It is about the start and end of my little jumps when i find people, but i do find a couple in the middle of no where (This helps make a little money, plus keep my SS in check,,, which leaves me KOS still) --- murder murder, yes indeed, K-I-L-L-I-N-G 17days....

1) look on the map, and find a place where at least 1 person is 2) go to said location, the closer the better 3) find the planets with asteroid belts around them, and do a 360 degree scan at each until you find someone, or realize the area is clean 4) if you find someone, narrow down the scanning angle until you pinpoint where they're at 5) warp to belt, attack, then head to a safespot to escape their counterattack/drop their loot 6) repeat ;)

You should not just thoughtlessly go through all the belts, that would be a waste of time! When you expose yourself in local, you have to work quickly, so maybe you should train on finding a specifik person in local in a random system in empire, BEFORE you do the real hunting. This will give you an advantage ------------------------------------------------

For Gods's sake have a setup that has at least a MWD and a 20k disruptor or you'l catch nothing.
Quick method -
Pick a system with no stations or complexes as that means the targets are in the belts somewhere, normaly
Warp to each planet (not moons, the risk of POSs is too high), and scan with overview settings at maximum range. This should tell you who and what ship is in that planetary system.
Weigh up your chances.
Check to see how many belts at that planet and if only a few quickly warp in to them sequencialy at 15k. Grab him and go to work.
Note a passive targetter helps with the element of suprise here.
Thats only quick and nasty but works for me, after that setup is everything but that is another discussion.

Get a second account create a character and get him into a respectable non-pirate corp. Have your main pirate character sit about 2 jumps away from system that your respectable guy is scanning then when you find some prey and pinpoint the location have your pirate jump into system warp to prey and do the dirty deeds.
Quick, efficient and the carebears dont have time to run before they check info on your pirate.

I dont say on my bio im a pirate however my corp is a privateer corp and my sec status kinda gives the game away.
Carebears these days are getting wise and aligning for quick warp outs to safe etc so pinpointing them using an alt generally does not get the warning signs flashing.
Scanning belts using Caleyjags generally gives these guys a chance to discover that there is a dodgy character in system. However if I use my nice cuddly character to find them I can get in and kill quickly and efficiently.

Undock. Do wide scan. Fly to point near belts/complex. Do short scan/directional. Warp to target. Kill/Ransom/Die. Rinse and repeat. ------------- Order of the Wombles: Recycling those untidy modules on your ship.

School of Hard Knocks is recruiting again. Send an EVEmail to Griffinator, him and many others can show you how to hunt, how to hunt well, and take you on hunting operations.

Waste of time? You can get some good items from the rats. Those "named" ones are great. and i need to get my SS to about -2.0 to go into high sec. "Empire" War decs after i make my corp :) --- murder murder, yes indeed, K-I-L-L-I-N-G 15days....
