Yes it was dumb
There's no demand. They were selling like hot cakes. I reckon that no more than 400 would sell a year - if we're up to 86,000 sold so far, that's 215 years to sell the lot. I doubt players will want to wait that long, so they'll reduce prices. They'd be going for 80-100k (possibly less) before long anyway.
There's better things to invest your money in to make a profit more quickly.
If they were selling like hotcakes... there was a high demand. CCP said they were going to raise the price, so some people decided to take "advantage" of it. The price didn't get raised, and now everybody owns three. It doesn't make a failed business attempt stupid. It just makes it a failed business attempt. Though, I didn't buy any BPOs, that doesn't mean that the thought of making an extra 14 to 15mil off of one doesn't sound inticing. If the prices did go up to 15mil then we'd all be sitting here cursing CCP for raising the prices because we couldn't take advantage of it. That wouldn't make US stupid either.
er...um....no. Even if the price HAD gone up there would still be no money to be made because all of these people bought so many there would still be more tractor beam bpo's on the market than there are players, so in order to sell them off the original buyers would likely have to sell them at or below what they bought them for to get rid of them.

the point is, even if the bpo increased to say 100mils isk u would still of make a loos. i mean ever proper manufacturer had already bought the bpo, and thus the demand for the bpo would be near zero
so if they suddenly increase the bpo npc price to 1bil isk, u would still of made a loss

It is stupid, because its obvious that unike Small Tower speculation for RMR, everyone can pitch in with something as cheap as 81k. Now, unlike small towers again, there's not much demand for tractor beams, so anyone with 2 braincells to bang together can figure out they are not going to sell en masse. Simple as. The only reason they were selling like hotcakes was BECAUSE of the speculation, BECAUSE everyone can pitch in and buy some. Demand for tractor beams did NOT drive the selling, idiots did. Stupid idiots who wasted their money.
You fail to remember that the price was supposed to go up to 15mil or so. That's why people jumped on them the way they did. NOW, people buy them because they're so cheap, but the post-patch bulk sales were due to this speculation (by that I mean CCP said it might happen, then they didn't do it). People thought, well, I can afford to lose a million ISK if it might bring me in 100mil. I would've thought the same thing, but I didn't care.
Now, just because you see no point in tractor beams doesn't mean somebody else feels the same way. Everyone but me in my corp uses these things. I imagine gate campers would like them as well. Who wouldn't want to use something that can keep your hauler from having to dodge roids to get to the can when they can pull the can to them? What ore thief wouldn't want that as well? The demand is out there, but the price was so cheap that everybody got one, if they wanted one, immediately. What the bulk buyers were hoping for was the price increase, so they could sell to the folks that didn't have one down the road or to the folks that bought one immediately and got their ship blown up trying to get it to HQ or *something else that happens in Eve and causes you to lose something you just bought*. Nobody can predict the future. I imagine if you could read real life market trends professionally, and esspecially if you could predict the way "God"(given as example because CCP controls Eve life much as "God" controls real life... in my belief, please, no Jihads or whiny athiests) wanted things to go, you'd be out investing in stocks, or lottery tickets, instead of insulting people on the forums. There is no demand for insults and flaming on the forums, but we sure seem to be in high supply. *************************************************

Speaking of isk sinks, it occurs to me that this actually isnt that big of one. Lets say 200k of these things were sold overall, probably fairly accurate if a bit too much...at around 80k isk each thats like 16 billion isk down the hole, so about the cost of a set of dred or carrier ship+component bpos...and a fart in the wind compared to a single titan bpo.
Conclusion: too many rich people in eve, send me your moneys kthx. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

@ HippoKing:
I bought 1 Tractor Beam BPO two days ago, out of The Citadel. I'd always intended to buy one, but put it off until I saw the patch notes because:
1) Lacked skills to use the product.
2) Lacked skills at the time to manufacture them efficiently. This is fixed.
3) Lacked ISK to pay the Exploitation Fee charged by players for each Graviton Physics book bought up just prior to RMR by those lucky Sisi folks that discovered the pre-req skill and came up with the idea to exploit the market.

Well - judging by the figures posted here (assuming they are correct) alot of isk has beem speculated on a BPO profit.
I have to admit that the correct thing to do would have been to adjust the price (if it is wrong) but not tell anyone in advance. TBH everyone with a spare 1 mill isk must have baught a few of these just in case it was correct. (I for one baught 10 ) The problem appears to be that the offer was way oversubscribed, and i guess thats why the price change was removed.
I know its all been a big laugh, but I also feel that as a goodwill gesture to everyone who has spent alot of money, ccp should do the descent thing and post some buy orders so people can unload their prints. I guess having a lot of worthless prints littering the game does not really affect things but the market for this item is totally fubar'd now

So now there is 1 BPO for every Subscriber out there. :) Sounds like a huge market.
Seriously wether CCP changes the Tractor Beam Price or not, it hardly matters. Take a look at the amount of towers bought before RMR. You probably see 4 times the money spend on one type of tower in a single region. |

remember, there IS attrition on control towers, and as the playerbase increases, the tower amounts must increase too. because the control towers cost more, and they weren't publicised, they didn't have problems like this
there is absolutely no attrition on these BPOs, so theyre going to be around a VERY long time

Buying 10 was probably a worthwhile risk - buying 100+ was just daft though. They're low demand BPOs FGS.
Anyone who bought more than 5 or 10, especially after the first day of the patchnotes being released was deluding themselves - they should have looked at the price history first..

Nono, send me a Tractor Beam BPO! Anyone? I'll take one for free!
Too bad it's such a pain adding up numbers from different days in the price history, or we could start counting up how many actual tractor beams were sold.
I bet it's far less.

CCP Should not place buy orders to allow ppl to recoup lossses.
ANyone who lost on this deserves to because it was a purely speculative move. Getting blimnded by visions of huge profits is always a bad idea and Eve does not generally protect people from their mistakes.

so, i thought we'd get people from empire region to post how many their region sold. so here goes:
The Forge - 16644 Domain - 9890 Placid - 17543 Essence - 10231 Tash-Murkon - 5442 Heimatar - 4990 Lonetrek - 13593 Kador - 2242 Khanid - 0 Verge Vendor - 4100 Genesis - 1337 Sinq Laison - 9108
total of 86012 from just those regions thats more than there are accounts in eve atm, i think
95120 X 81000 = 7,704,720,000 Spent on Speculation
i'm updating this as more people post btw
lol, didn't someone predict yesterday that more would sell than total eve accounts?
CCP has even knows it. They've added the word BIGSHOT to the URL of my avatar. |

Its not stupid:
I spent 15M on 175 of those BPO's
15M is not a lot of money, and it was a gamble!
Everyone can figure that everyone who knew about this would try the same trick!
I "only" bought 175, because that way if i sold 1 (just one) I would break even, and I live in a region that has no NPC sell orders for this particular BPO, so it wasnt a bad bet.
Again: its not stupid to try your luck at this, whats stupid is putting all your money on a gamble, and then whining about it if it falls through!

I bought one. It was on my list anyway, and makes sense to grab it before the price soared.

what would make me LOL one final time is has anyone logged on after the patch and put up a sell order for say 100 items at 14 mill each, without checking the market.
The Sales taxes on this would really just rub salt in the wounds

Understanding the lazy nature of players I invested in 100 originals in speculation, now did I expect to sell em at 14.99mil each? No naturally not but as my initial investment was only 8.1mil I would only have to move a mere 9 prints at 1mil each to make a profit.
The profit however was not the main reason for getting the prints, the reason was so that I would have more than enough to cover me and friends with the prints untill I stop playing the game sometime in the future.
100 seemed like a good number as it would allow me to try to sell a resonable number to get my investment back and still leave me with ample prints for any incident in the future.
