Alright so I have a Ferox with battle cruiser level 2 as the skill. Now the ferox skill bonus is 5% to all shield resists for each skill level, but I'm not getting all the shield bonuses except in EM damage.
Example, the Ferox has base shield resistances at these levels. EM: 0% Explosive: 60% Kinetic: 40% Thermal: 20%
Now to my understanding with level 2 battlecruiser skill, a ferox should have this as it's resistances when being piloted EM: 10% Explosive: 70% Kinetic: 50% Thermal: 30%
But what I have listed is EM: 10% Explosive: 64% Kinetic: 46% Thermal: 28%
The EM seems to be the only one recieving the proper bonus, and the lower base resistance the higher it seems it gets a bonus from my battle cruiser skill. Now how can this be? Is it a bug or am I misunderstanding the skill bonus?

The only one that will get the full 25% from 5/5BC skill is EM because of the resist stacking penalties.

5% resist that applies to the unresisted parts (meaning 5% of the 40% that are not resisted in the explosive for example)
meaning at lvl2 you get 10% of the 40% wich is 4%
4+60 = 64 so it's all ok ----------------

yeah, resistances can be confusingly worded at times. when it offers you an extra 5% to your resistances, that doesn't translate to "at level 2, 40%+10%=50%", it means it's boosting each resistance by that percentage. So what you're getting is an extra 5% of 40, rather than an extra 5.
sneaky, huh? I understand the same applies to armour and shield hardeners.

No, it shaves off 10% from the remaining "vulnerable" part of the shield. It doesn't add 10 percentage units.
Example, explosive resistance: 100% - 60% = 40% of "unresisted HP". 10% of 40% = .4*0.1 = 0.04 = 4 percent units. 100% - (40 - 4)% = 64% of reistance.
Or, to put it in a different way. An Empire sentry does 25 exp, 25 em, 50 kin, and 50 th damage for a total of 150 damage base. After resistances and turret damage mod, let's say you take 100 points of damage. If all resistances are increased the way you naturally assumed, the end resulting damage would be somewhere in the region of 80 points of damage. With the way the resistances are calculated, your damage is decreased by 10% down to 90. That is 10% (units) on HP layer without resistances at all is half as beneficial than 10% (units) on an HP layer with 50% resistance. The damage taken in the first case is reduced with 10% and in the second case it is reduced by 20%.
For each level of Battlecruiser, your Ferox recieves 5% less damage (regardless of source). That is how it should be read.

It is not due to stacking, there is NO stacking penalty on skills. It is due to the way that resistances are calculated that Ithildin has correctly explained. If you add one hardener to the above, you get no stacking (stacking is only between MODULES), so you take 50% off the unhardened HP (eg with explosive its currently at 64, 100-64=36, half off 36 is 18, resist = 82%). If you add a second hardener, NOW the stacking penalty kicks in, so you get less than another 50% bonus (you would not get 9% raw percentage points from a second EXP hardener). ---:::---
