Will the new Asian Server be avaiable to the rest of the world or is it restricted to certain contries?

Why exactly are they adding another server? I thought that Eve was supposed to be a purely single world? -------- Get over it. (TM) |

Apparently a lot of Asians aren't really compatible with the more heavily Euro-American playerbase on Tranquility. Or maybe it's so that non-English speaking Asians can play EVE? I don't know, but supposedly it's going to be a big improvement for us here on Tranquility, and that's all I care about.
By the way, since Tranquility is being replaced by the new 64-bit bladeserver, does anybody think that Serenity might inherit Tranquility's old hardware? -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

Afaik the new server will only be aviable for the asian market, the main reason for this was named the speech barrier.

Its not an "Asian" server, it is a chinese server due to the new laws going into effect there.

Read up on it before you assume, China has it's own set of laws regarding mmorpgs and getting a connection from china to these servers isn't too great either. They're setting up an Asian cluster to cator to that since there is a large market there. As far as i know it won't be open to the rest of the world. _______________

As explained at FF, there are quite a few reason for the Shard. As much as I hate to see it happen I understand that it might be needed, especially when you think of things like law restrictions on game time.
At first I thought they would consider making a new start out section of the game for the asian market, something dangerously unreachable on most accounts although making worth wild trade items. Even for the sake of something interesting have that part of place completely in a different language... think of the social interaction and the desire to take up an asian language. Ah could dream that up for ages, needless to say I am sure CCP will post something about it (if they havent already) on the Shard.

Tranquility's current hardware isn't powerful enough for its current purpose, but it's still huge. Trashing it would be a crime. -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

Well, as I understand it there will be some differences in the game itself. Some things in our version of EVE isn't allowed in MMOGs in China. So I'm guessing there will be differences between the versions of EVE. I also think the whole game will be in Chinese.
But I have no idea if it will be asians only or if you can join if you go through the trouble of buying and paying for the asian version.

There are two primary reasons for the creation of Serenity. The first is that the Chinese government has imposed a limit on the amount of time a user may be connected to an MMOG. If Tranquility were to be opened to the Chinese population, we would have to impose this time limit for all of Tranquility's users.
The second is that the entire Eve client needs to be localized to the various Chinese dialects. CCP-China will handle all localization efforts on Serenity, thus allowing CCP-Iceland to focus exclusively on Tranquility.

Kieron,
Can you confirm that PvP is not allowed/un-available on Serenity as it will stand. In my understanding the Chinese Government has special laws that control Player vs. Player. for antone under age of 13 or is it 18?

The main reason for the Asian shard is that china has very strict internet laws, Tranq does not live upp to those laws so if CCP wants the chinese market then they have to set up a second shard.
Also if CCP decides to create a whole new galaxy for the new shard this could at a later time be connected to tranq to greatly increase the size of the playable world.
As china has recently altered their internet laws it may not be neccesary to set up a second shard however.
The problem with language is not as large as you may think as most Asians wealthy enough to afford playing tend to be fluent enogh in english to play the game in english.

Edited by: Warnasche Ulthor on 12/01/2006 19:13:25 3-hour time limit, with a 5-hour break. Looks like the Chinese servers will not have to contend with 23/7 macro mining :)
Edit: Yeah, that was gratuitous, but I couldn't resist.

I am not aware of any PvP restrictions being placed on Serenity at this time. However, if the Chinese government has passed laws governing PvP by minors, we have no option but to follow them and will gladly do so. The Chinese MMOG market is huge, and we do not want to do anything to jeopardize our investment with Serenity.

I wonder what effect these new laws will have upon EVE compared to other MMORPG's. People often say that one of EVE's more attractive qualities is the ability to learn while off-line and not be on 24/7 to "level up", unlike most other MMORPGs. In theory EVE's characters, with careful planning of skill times, will not be at a disadvantage compared to hack and slashers like WOW.
I would have thought that, although overall all MMORPGs will suffer somewhat, EVE will seem more attractive to many gamers in China after the law changes.

It will be leased hardware, it will probably go back to the supplier.
And they wont use it for sisi, they don't have the room. From what I understand sisi is located at their office or something. -

From the article.
"Minors should not be allowed to play online games that have PK content, that allow players to increase the power of their own online game characters by killing other players," Liu Shifa, head of the MOC's Internet Culture Division, which drafts policies governing the online gaming market, told Interfax.
