Edited by: xeno calligan on 26/08/2003 16:24:55 This might have been discovered independently and been around since c-day, but since I have gone to great extent to illustrate the technique, I have taken the naming convention my corp has adopted; "The Calligan Maneuver(tm)", or "Calling"... oh screw it: AFK chain-killing.
Just like The Zezman Manuver(tm) can be formulated as
"Don't kill the last 'rat.",
AFK chain killing boils down to
"Smartbombs have auto-repeat".
Here's the long version
To keep the smartbombs going, you obviously you need a high cap recharge rate; if the cap recharge rate can't keep up with the cap consumption, module deactivation failure mode soon ensures.
For my Thorax I used 2 med smartbombs (equivalent to 4 small wrt. cap drain), med cap battery (+260 cap or so), 5 cap power relays (+20% cap recharge, -25% shield rechrge). This will give you a cap recharge that will make you laugh your head off, but you'll stop as soon as you fire up those smartbombs.
Clearly the cap power relays will make your shield recharge FUBAR, so if you want to actually put the smartbombs to use, you need defences. I was able to run 1 70% hardener and a small shield booster at the same time as the smartbombs. This made the cap stablilize at about 35%.
For those just graduating from AFK mining school, be warned that auto-repeat currently seems bugged: any autorepeating module (booster, hardener and smartbombs verified) will deactivate after around 1000-1050 activations (which is 27mins for the shield booster with a 1.6sec cycle and 2hrs 45min for the hardener), eventually leading to the dreaded shield-down failure mode.
Hunting grounds
The easiest way to get a chain started is to find a heterogenous spawn consisting of a number of carebears (the snack) and a single pot-shot lover (the anchor...uh, I mean placeholder(tm)). I find that 4 Gurristas Terrorists make good loving carebears, as they will hug you within 3km. Gurristas Anihilators make good pot-shot lovers, they stay at 10km toss missiles in your general direction (which only become SB snacks).
Improvements
This way, while the hunters are AFK chain-killing, the traders are AFK jumping with ore bought from AFK miners. This makes it unfair for pirates, so I would suggest the following improvements:
- Autotargeting modules should consistently target every hostile object within the ships targeting range -- this includes indys and of course those much feared pods of doom.
- Modules that require a target to function, should be linkable to the autotargeting modules, as previously suggested on these boards. This allows automatic webbification, warp scrabling, jamming and firecontrol to be directed towards the target.
- The hauling drones that many ppl here have been craving, should be implemented as well. They would scan the area for insecure containers, loot them and deposit the loot in a secure container as designated by the owner.
With these improvements, pirates too can be AFK, thus we can all go out and enjoy the last few days of the summer while playing EVE
Cheers
(sorry, couldn't resist it -- no hard feelings I hope, Zezman )
EDIT: sbelling, grammars or semantics.
