I was curious if any of the fine folks at CCP had given a thought to tossing together a small applet for the LCD on this keyboard that displays otherwise available information in a condensed form for easy reference.
Off the top of my head, I can think of putting any of the following on the secondary screen: * Capacitor % left (or units left) * Current speed * Selected item's distance * Combat log * Next system/waypoint in autopilot * Shield/Armor/Structure (either mine or locked target's)
Basically, it's useful for a quick look at info that is always available but might be in an odd spot on the UI.
Heck, with 4 soft buttons dedicated to the LCD itself, you could pack 4 screens' worth of information, toggled by grouping. Something useful that doesn't break anything for the people who didn't shell out the cash for the keyboard.
This is the kind of applet/plugin that I'd write myself if a) I knew where to find the information in EVE and b) it wasn't considered 'modding' (and therefore punishable). -------- "Risk... is our business." - James T. Kirk, "Return to Tomorrow" |

Oy, realized that this should be in Features/Ideas forum.
Would a mod move it when they see this? Thanks. ^^;

Would be a very nice feature. I'd like to have other remote stats viewing features too tho, not just restricted to this keyboard. -----

I'd like this too. Dunno if a player could write it rather than CCP though, they have enough on their hands.

The game client has to be changed to make the relevant stats available to outside programs or contain the applet within itself, so its not really something players can do.
Another vote for G15 support from me though :) . ----- Apologies for any rambling that may have just occurred.

Actually, the information IS available, in running memory.
So, the question I ask myself is, if someone were to program something for these keyboards (or, hell, a systray app that would do it, which has an option to display stats on the G15), would this be considered an exploit???

I would love G15 support in eve. Right now I am using it with a teamspeak plugin.

As per my other thread, I've received a response from the GMs which has given me guidelines to work within. I'm starting this project as of now.

Is the G15 that new fangled super-dooper keyboard with an entire keypad dedicated to multiple action key assignments/macro's.. if so, could it be used as a legitimate key stroke binder ? :P

Thanks Laqum!
So, I've got it sort-of working on the test server, but there is some difference between that version and the official version that I'll have to track. It is still quite buggy and has been to blame for a couple of CTDs I experienced.
Anyhow, just posting an update. Back into the trenches with me.

As an owner of a G15, I would love this feature, to show all that information and (especially the log), being able to have the log running in combat in real-time while being able to watch it would be cool.
Yes it has an extra 18 keys (3 function toggles for a total of 54) but those keys can only be used as keyboard binds, they cannot execute mouse binds as far as I have seen and I would think you would need a mouse bind of some sort to do most things in the game (not for easy easy stuff like fire all weapons or whatnot, you can just button smash and do that

The only problem I can see with making info like this available to outside apps is the ease it adds to designing macros. If you can get that data into your keyboard it shouldn't be much of a trick to get an automated program to read and interpret it. Imagine seeing not just mining macros but rat hunting and various other automated task macros. Combine the outputs with programs like the Trade Finder and you could have auto-traders, and all sorts of other crazy stuff. *shudders*
The main thing that keeps various tasks other than mining from being automated (and that makes it slightly harder to automate mining, though not difficult enough to deter many people) in my opinion is that you don't have easy data outputs for your program to tell what the client is doing, you only have visual (which is so layered with transparencies and such that it's damn near impossible to get reliable indicators out of it). As it stands you have to go into the actual program code (can ya tell I'm not a programmer? lol) to get that kind of stuff, and that's something most people don't know how to do.

Edited by: Mechaet on 08/02/2006 04:09:48 Actually, reading a program's memory space is a rather simplistic task of determining the PID for the process you want to monitor, then looking up the process's memory space within the Windows API. There is actually a function in Visual C++ that handles this sort of thing with a fair amount of grace.
Finding what you want to get out of it, however, is the challenge. Currently I am looking for a 10-character needle in a 400 million character haystack.
EDIT: It should be worth noting that with the exception of a direct request from CCP the code for this applet will have to remain closed-source. I'm not going to be known as the guy who handed the macroers their meal on a silver platter. If they weren't such lazy people to begin with they wouldn't even need macros.
Also due to the fact that I will be using a non-standard set of search algorithms that are designed specifically with this sort of task in mind, and code like that is not easy to come by, it will remain closed-source. Nothing in my program will be providing an interlink to other programs, as well. And to keep the hackers at bay, standard code onfuscation technique :)
Scum of the galaxy, those folk.
