Edited by: Auen LaRoe on 14/01/2006 04:49:11 As I've been getting more and more into the roleplaying and pseudo-science that EvE employs, I've been wondering what exactly powers our ships.
I think it'd be easy to say the Minmatar use solar power, but those would have to be some damn efficient solar collectors. Do our ships rely on matter-antimatter reactions, fusion (or even simple fission), or perhaps something more exotic (ie stable mini-quantum singularity or a Space Hamster)?
Let's hear some discussion.
EDIT: Doing some research into ships and items in the Item Database, it appears that the tech 2 ships and their constituent components yield insight into the races' different methods of power production:
Amarr) Antimatter Gallente) Fusion Caldari) mysterious "Gravitons" Minmatar) Nuclear or fission reactors

Gravitons are the (at this point) theoretical particles responsible for gravitational force. You can see some hints in teh types of sensors used by each race too. -------------- Silver Night Director -Production and Science Have a question about Prime Fiction? Ask here!

Fusion....meh boring Fission....Oh noes!!! Nukes! Anti-Matter....get hit in the head with a partical of this stuff and Bomb...not only does your head vaporise from the energy release but so does your city block.
Graviton...well
Gravity doesnt have particale so much as it is a wave.....one big wave made up of...?????
For more information on a Graviton Drive system look up the "Space Drive"Linkage

well its a highly complex graviton induction system this is done through genetically modified space hamsters basically the wheels their running in, collect stray gravitons from other universes and turns them into graviton hamster pellets which in turn allow your space hamster to run even faster powering your ship and getting more gravitons

Thats the latest theory which is hyper-dimensional string theory. Its really hard to pin gravity down because mathmatically gravity extends beyond our dimension into about the 10th dimension.
However using Kaluza-Klein theory, the graviton theory is a product of quantum mechcanics....and gravitons are just a product of "Crap we dont know." We can explain how it works. But we can't explain why it works.

We can explain how it works. But we can't explain why it works.
and that'S why the theories fill their roles of providing propper number for calculation quite well, but hardly explain anything. Just an opinion.
Same stupid stuff like electrons (which i have to deal with), wave-particle-dualism. "Wave-Particle duality means that sub-atomic objects should PROPAGATE as waves but INTERACT as particles" bah It's more about their configuration then... ok i'm to drunk. just want to do my chemistry without having to mess arround with that stuff.
I think Eve Ships use same kind of powerplant like in Star Trek. Black Holes (singularities, Romulan ships). Antimatter/matter reaction (Federation, most races do that) or some other chemical process with a high negative entalphy. Eve universe knows Antimatter and can use antimatter, powerfull. Propulsion take lot of energy, especially Warp drives (seem quite similar to star trek, too) and i doubt that solar collectors can collect enough high energy particles (photons, microwaves etc bla bla) to generate that much energy in a short time.

The Powerplants seem very powerfull since we can push their efficiency quite far (i.e.: cap recharge increase). Now the question is: HOW THE HELL DO CAP BATTERIES HOLD SO MUCH ENERGY!!!111

Cap battery's just have to be giant accumalators, hell that is all your capacitor / stored energy bar is.
There are a lot of items that can store a lot of power even in today's world, most power stations and transformers run capacitors that store a massive amount of power, the problem is that they are also discharging that energy extreamly fast. When the power gets cut from a station you will notice that it's not an instant 'lights out' effect, it goes down in a 'wave' as the power output and the stored energy dies out.
Now all eve has is better ways of storing that power, Batteries etc, that draw from the reactor and store it for later use.

i think the ships are all powered by fusion.

Edited by: Karl Shade on 15/01/2006 20:39:20 Since the ship db lists different propulsion methods for the ships, wouldnŠt it be logical to assume that this is also the main powersource?
For reference. Gallente: ion propulsion Ammar: fusion propulsion Caldari: magpulse propulsion Minmatar: plasma propulsion
Not a scientist myself though so maybe not.

Thousands of hampsters on wheels. "Lag" is when they all their tiny feet get tired at the same time.

Automated tutorial system "Aura" does tell us that our ships are powered by fusion reactors.
Sigh. If only poor Aura knew how few a people listen to her. She would cry neon tears.

Edited by: Laejar Rendas on 16/01/2006 09:07:54 Actually the average ship's engine room contains nothing more than a dozen floor to ceiling metal poles. What am I talking about? Centripetal Force.
Seriously, beyond the stuff mentioned in the first post, all I know is I don't pay for fuel and I haven't died of radiation.

OK. Forget what I said! I'm retrofitting my ship with that ASAP!

Yep. Every time we undock and start to fly, the divorce rate goes up.

Definatly fusion reactors for power for the starting frigates... It could offcourse be that some other ships have different powergrids, but I doubt it. After all, we know that no ship requires any form of fuel (of signifigance), and the only fuels widely available in space are hydrogen and solar power. Solar power is low-yield, and requires vulnerable external panels. Hydrogen is easily used to power fusion reactors.
How the power is converted into propulsion is another matter entirely... (I heard a rumour that the Amarrians used Minmatar oarsmen and drove them on with electroshocks... But I never looked inside one of their ships, so I wouldn't know)
