As above, just sat in a safespot in an empty/near empty system doing nothing but looking at my own ship, not touching the mouse or any other controls, my frame rate has been bouncing around.
Most of the time it's at 4 FPS, then it jumps to 30 FPS and holds steady for maybe 8 seconds, then it climbs to 60 FPS for a couple of seconds and crashes back to 4 FPS for 15 seconds+, then the process repeats itself.
When Eve's FPS falls to 4 FPS, my whole systems performance drops to almost non-existent levels (if I alt-tab out of eve and open up other apps for instance).
CPU clock rate and temperature remains steady (no evidence of throttling).
This all seems to have started with Odyssey 1.1.6
Systems specs:
Core2Duo T5800 @ 2 GHZ (no O/C) Geforce 9600M GT 512MB (no O/C) 4 GB RAM Windows 7 Pro 64bit
GFX settings Custom (Low-Medium)
Windowed or full screen does not affect the problem (except I get 7 FPS in full screen mode when FPS drops instead of 4 FPS)
Cleared the cache, no effect.
Tested on multiple characters and accounts, same story.
Any ideas anyone? I'm wondering if some graphics VSync setting deep in my NVidia profile is effecting things, or that my GPU is overheating. But if this was the case, I don't see why the FPS drops in Eve would affect windows application performance at the same time. |

Problem solved, was the GPU overheating and throttling. |

Since Vista, windows has been using the GPU for application flair by default (Turn off Aero). It might have gotten better in a service pack or in win8 but I don't know. It shouldn't 100% load your GPU but if your GPU was already overheating by the game then it needs time to cool down to get performance normal. Also, when it's running hot any number of errors can linger not to mention permanent damage.
Take out your card, after it's at room temp, and use canned air on your GPU and slots. Make sure there is proper ventilation and there isn't too much clutter in your box preventing air flow. If that doesn't work get a new card :-)

That explains that, thanks. I've blasted compressed air to clear dust from my system. My graphics cards temp is down from 110C (where it throttles) to an icey cool 100C under load At least it's not throttling anymore.

this one makes any GPU go crazy hot, "interval on" cap FPS to 60, wich is enought, and your gpu will thank you (a lot) |
