Pretty simple proposal: give players more tools for visualizing map data.
One major problem with the current starmap's display of data (and a major reason I continue to use tools like dotlan) is that while lots of useful statistical information is available through the map, the way a lot of that information is displayed isn't helpful.
Take coloring stars by NPC kills in the last 24 hours, for example: the visual difference between a system with zero, twenty, or 500 NPC kills in the last 24 hrs is pretty discernable, but once you go above that the graphical representations of larger numbers aren't visually distinct from those of smaller numbers-- a system with 500 kills looks the same as a system with 3k kills which looks the same as a system with 8k kills.
Give players tools so they can configure how the map displays information. Allow them to set different colors for different value ranges, for example, or control the size of visual markers. Let us customize our maps so that information comes across clearly regardless of what actual values are being represented.
At the very least, please revisit the display of information on the starmap. Even if we can't control the way data are displayed, at least make the default displays clearer. |

Also it would be nice if the F11 map didn't literally look like the starmap from Escape Velocity, a game from 1996.
EDIT: Actually I take that back: looking at it now it looks like the graphics have been revised at some point. It looks pretty decent. |
