I have a question about 3rd-party apps per the EULA:
Quote: You may not use your own or third-party software to modify any content appearing within the Game environment or change how the Game is played. You may not use macros or other stored rapid keystrokes or other patterns of play that facilitate acquisition of items, currency, objects, character attributes, rank or status at an accelerated rate when compared with ordinary Game play. You may not rewrite or modify the user interface or otherwise manipulate data in any way to acquire items, currency, objects, character attributes or beneficial actions not actually acquired or achieved in the Game.
If I write an app that displays information about my character on another screen (isk, shield%, etc) outside of Eve, and it does not modify how the game is played, and has no capability of doing so, is that still a breach of the EULA? I am only planning on displaying information that would normally be a mouse-hover or a click away.
Reason I am asking is I am currently beginning to work on an LCD applet for the most excellent Logitech G15 keyboard, and I am posed the choice of either BF2 or Eve (since I play those two the most). EA has basically told me that as long as the app is read-only they are fine with it, and punkbuster should quietly ignore it. However, I play Eve a LOT more than I play BF2, so I'd prefer to make the applet for something I use constantly. I am just attempting to clear my path before starting, so I don't run into any undue problems (like, getting my account banned).
Thanks!

No it isn't, obviously, otherwise EVE Character Manager would be against the rules
However, a word of warning: do not have it update automatically all the time, or CCP will get very annoyed. ECM's use forced the My Character sheet down for 2 months. -- Proud member of the [23].

Unlike ECM, I'd be pulling my information from the eve client's memory space, due to the much more real-time nature of the G15's LCD. Besides, ECM cannot display what % of shields you have, or armor, etc. which is most of what I aim to put on the LCD. To keep it fair for the non-G15-owners out there, I plan on making it display said information in a small window on the desktop.

Ooh please do write a program for the G15, me and 3 of my friends would thank you. It would actually get some use apart from a glorified clock.

You know, on the box for my G15 it has a display where it had bullets remaining, health, etc. listed. There is NO built-in functionality to do this for 99% of games. As such, those of us with programming knowledge are then forced to make our own apps to display worthwhile stuff on the LCD. Kind of a pain, really, but I needed a little side-project to get interested in.
Don't take that as a knock against the G15, I think it is more the marketing monkeys at Logitech who are at fault on that one. I love my G15. Not only is it a completely awesome keyboard, the LCD makes it worth the trouble, and the G-keys are useful when applied properly. I have profiles for everything from Photoshop to Visual Studio programmed into mine. As a bonus, it appears to work properly with my new iMac (intel edition).
So, CCP, any good/not good comments? Pretty please?

If anyone thinks we'll see the optimus anytime soon and for under 700 bucks, they're crazy.

Recent versions of fraps and ventrilo have support for the G15 LCD, there is an app available here for teamspeak support. g15forum2.com has a few handy apps. g15mods.com is another.
Support seems to be trickling in and can only get better right . ----- Apologies for any rambling that may have just occurred.

You wont get an answer here. If you have a question about something like that, email support at [email protected] If the GMs feel its necessary for the Devs to see it, they'll make sure they do.

OK, I know communications between GMs and players are supposed to be kept private.
So, with that in mind, I did receive a response from the GM on my question, and he talked to a dev who said it will be fine as long as it does not modify the client, does not modify anything in memory, and does not alter the behavior of the eve client.
He also said some other stuff but I will hold that information a bit closer to me as it should not be relevant info for anyone besides me.
Long story short: I have my greenlight! As soon as I have a beta ready I will make it available. Testing will be done, oddly enough, on the testing server, and as soon as I have something ready for testing, I'll announce it.

Thanks for the offer, but I run a webhosting company in my spare time. Petabytes of bandwidth, we're talking here :) If for some odd reason my servers should quit on me or I need some other mirroring I will definitely let you know (and besides, once it is up for download you can mirror it if you want, nothing I can or will do to stop you.)

I think you're bordering on breaknig the EULA myself.
Most 3rd party applications I've seen have either worked on official CCP-sanctioned data, on byproducts of eve (cache files), or on the res files themselves. Pulling from memory space is going to be hard to do without looking at Python *self snip, don't want to tell you how*.
Seriously, email the dev team, else you will get a perma-ban. If you try without permission.

I think one of the reasons that Logitech chose(SP?) to not build the apps themselves is 90% money, and 10 % the fact that if players can build an app for THEIR game, it'll reflect the info that PLAYERS want in the app, and not what some marketing focus group wants.
I used a few similar apps for City Of Hero's. And they help quite a bit.
For me, anything that offloads HUD elements to my G15 is perfect.
And if you do get an app going, please post it to the http://www.g15mods.com/ http://www.g15forums.com/
web sites, as a lot of people with G15's hold off on games till they have G15 support.
I'd like to see a status bar on the currently training skill if possible. maybe a chat channel so we don't need so many on the screen. I don't see a big need for the Sheild/armor/hull as we can't remove that status Hud from the screen AFAIK.
I'll thank you in advance for anything you produce :)

Then how about discussing the features you'd want in the LCD?
For once, I too own a G15 since a few days (very happy!), and I'd like to see the following things:
Combat mode: Displays Target Shield/Armor/Hull, Tag, Speed, Transversal speed, and maybe some other usefull information (number of drones attacking it, average damage you did the last 30 seconds, as well as his, but those are harder)
General mode: ISK Balance, orders currently open, current skill training, estimated time of completion, mission status, that sort of stuff.
Traveling mode: Number of jumps left, speed, current system, although this stuff is already available on screen.
Trade mode: Select an item, and it will display the highest available price, number of jumps required, desired amount, usefull stuff that helps to check item prices from your cargo bay quicker, without having to open the market screen every time.
The thing with especially the combat mode is that you could enlarge the overview to contain all this data, but it would be much easier to show this on the lcd. The target the info is displayed on would of course be the one selected. Eve already tends to suffer from screen overload when you want to know stuff, and this makes things a lot easier.
If you pull this off, Logitech will most likely sell tons of G15 boards to Eve-players :)

Edited by: Two step on 19/01/2007 15:34:37 Thats interesting, when I petitioned about writing a G15 app 4 or 5 months ago I was told that it would be against the EULA and was a bannable offence. I would like to see an official CCP clarification on this.
(edit: doh, didn't see the dates)
