Hi everyone
I have been quite interested in making my own ship model just for fun recently and personally I really like the newish Venture as it has a lot of really cool shapes and textures to play with in a very high resolution build so may possibly get that underway soon.
Its not my first time building spaceships either. In 2007 I designed and built single handedly a 7ft long $6000NZD film miniature of a re-imagined Starship Von Braun and UNN Rickenbacker for a film adaptation of System Shock 2 (Completely theoretical for my honors degree)
I was simply wondering from a recent forum search on this topic as to how many people who play eve could be interested in the same thing? Or if even CCP would allow someone like me to do this with their IP. I'm not talking about mass productions of every ship in the game, more along the lines of very limited runs of hand built then molded/casted display models, probably with working lights etc. For the Venture I mentioned earlier I was thinking of modeling that at a scale of 1:200 which would make its actual size 665mm, or 26 inches long, fully LED driven to include every strobe and the four main floodlights and engines. The rough figure I have been looking at to built it isn't that much, maybe around $250-350USD depending on how far I go.
A very brief history of myself: I am based in the capital of New Zealand , Wellington Have played Eve for 10 months and plan on many more as I absolutely love it ;-) Bachelor of Industrial design When I was a student I actually dealt with Asgeir Jon Asgeirsson and Cliffy B for design input on my 7ft Von Braun back in 2007 I've always wanted to work with CCP since my study days I have been working in the feature film industry for 7 years For 5 of those years I have been Senior modelmaker and concept designer for Sir Peter Jackson
Recently I have finished three and a half years making concept models for The Hobbit trilogy and while thinking about making my Venture, I saw a potential business opportunity involving you, the EVE community.
Now I have no idea if anything will come of this, CCP may shut this down immediately, the EVE community may shut this down immediately, who knows? If anything I would really like to see what someone at CCP thinks about this. The point is, I really enjoy EVE and the story around it, I'm highly skilled and passionate and want to build my own ship again, maybe even build quite a few!
I welcome every troll an positive/negative comment to see what you think.
Here is a link to a handful of photos of the 7ft miniature from 2007.
Thanks everyone, I know that was a bit of a read!

Honestly though, especially at your professional level (which I will believe while pouring salt down my gullet) your best bet would have been to run this by CCP in private first. Why do bikers wear leather ??-á Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.-á -- Paul Lynde |

Seriously however, I wish you the best of luck, what you do is almost a lost art due to CGI. I used to know several people in that business back when John Dykstra was the go-to guy for this stuff in the 80's. I learned a lot of respect for the craft watching them. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'Hodor'. |

Wow. What an amazing genius he was.
The only one I ever met of that troop was Harrison Ellenshaw who did most the SW:IV matte paintings. He came to a convention in Houston in 1980 and brought the one for the Tractor Beam Chasm for display (you could see Exacto knife cutouts all over it).

And so it begins, .here I have scaled wireframe renderings to be used for templates and who knows what else.
Created using TriExporter and Autodesk Maya via mentalray.
If anyone is interested the texture is a simple white Lambert with Contour Rendering enabled around every poly face, its found in the mentalray attribute options.
Approximate length of the images are 400mm which will result in a scale of 1:333 (rounded).

Your design Von Braun is a biological/mechanical ship? What is your concept or purpose of this craft in EVE?
Introducing this to EVE would be fascinating as a first ever bio/mechanical ship. A lore of nano-sciences horror, cybernetic virus outbreak, assimilating biomass, like another stage of Rogue Drone of evolution to sentient beings, as living ships in space. Not to delude the Sansha plot, but something really more fierce and darker than that.
I'd like to see Sentient Drones dependent on a strong hull tank, limited armor and intelligence comparable to Sleeper threats and a mix of Incursion mechanics. Maybe only to have these ships piloted with exclusive implants to interface the ship rather than a rack of skill books. |

Some of the Jove ships look extremely organic. BoBwins Law: As a discussion/war between two large nullsec entities grows longer, the probability of one comparing the other to BoB aproaches near certainty. |

Hi, you have raised some very interesting design topics there, bio-mechanics as a genre was a central part to the research competent of the Von Braun's design. The basic (off the top of my head) lore of the game System Shock 2 was that the sentient AI S.H.O.D.A.N. took control over two starships after she herself had been lost in space for many years on a station conducting biological research with viruses. This station was discovered by the crew of the two ships and she uploaded herself to them via a distress signal. S.H.O.D.A.N.'s experiments then find there way on board the Von Braun and infect the crew, most of them being absorbed into one large fleshy being called 'The Many' a hive mind that feeds from the energy of the warp drive. The Sansha of EVE would be a great place to start a plot line like this, although EVE online was never the reason for building the Von Braun, it's ideas could be used quite nicely. As with rouge drones, perhaps a sentient bio mechanical drone mothership could be introduced?? Drones are a hive mind themselves are they not??
Maybe sleepers find there way into K-Space via Capsuleer experimentation in W-Space???
The possibilities are quite endless :) |

Your have been told correct it's plastic, I have one and think its cool but it's definitely breakable, I've painted the bridge on mine to have the actual complete rafter look rather than a huge glory orange dot in the middle. |

All the best with your endeavour.
CCP used to produce a series of Battleship models using resin, though they didnt have weapons fitted. This was the Megathron Model which was sold through the previous incarnation of the eve store, but also produced the Raven, Tempest(?), and I think the Geddon.
There was also did the Navy versions of the ships, and i believe at one fan fest (2009??) there were a couple of Limited edition Ravens given away as part of a blind auction.
It would be good to have a group of ships from Frigates->Battleships for all races, the Gallante and Amarr would be some pretty nice models, some Caldari and Minmatar may be a little brittle due to their love of ariel like spikey bits (Raven, Tempest, Raven etc). |

It would depend on the courier, I think FED-EX charge about NZ$200 for a 10kg package to the UK/EU, I suppose it depends how quickly you want it delivered. There might also be additional local import taxes payable by the purchaser.
As with a previous poster I'd be very interested in buying one, especially if it was in a kit format which would keep the cost down a little. |

Hey, Thanks for the questions! The Von Braun took about 2 months to build and is huge, 7 foot long and weighs about 130kg. It also has about $6000 worth of fiber optic drivers and 800 meters of polymer fiber inside it!
I wond be working on the Venture full time so it will probably take 3-4 week at a rough guess and since I'll be using some electrics in her as well it would probably be worth quite a bit seeing as it's a one off and a decent size. I'm basically going for a full blown film able miniature with it.
Once I start building it I will get a much better idea! |

Im impressed by your craftmanship. Would love to be able to do that myself but unfortunately im better at blowing stuff up then creating it :)
Tho i do have 1 advice.
Your crafting something that is suppost to be completely like the ingame thing. BUT .. you have choosen to use 3 mining lasers (or was it Gas cloud harvesters?).
The Venture only has 2 turret hardpoints.
Imho that 3th one should not be on there.
For the rest keep up the good work :)

I'm not really trying to make an exact replica of the in-game Venture in term of being accurate with its statistics etc. Will it look the same? You bet!, will there be even more detail than the game version? You bet!
Games are limited by polygons, my fingertips and paint brushes aren't :-)

Baseplate for Gas Harvestor turret
First official part, lol. Made only from 1.5mm pasteboard and set solid with this superglue. Avetek is a distributor here, its made by a company called BSi International
Since there are 6 of these bad boys I will build one high detail master then ill be casting 6 of them. This will involve taking you guys/gals through my techniques and materials so hopefully one of two of you can see how to have a go at home. |

I am completely hopeless at anything and everything art related, but at the same time I really enjoy watching talented artists go about their work and creating their masterpieces from nothing.
So please do continue taking pictures of your work and posting them together with some explanation as you did above as Im sure Im not the only one who enjoys it! While I do understand the reasoning behind what you have said, others in the industry have said the same thing many times over. Those machines can save time but most often I'm just simply faster than one. Those two little parts today probably took me 20 mins tops. 3D printers suffer badly from an effect called stair-casing and only the best machines out there, the $100k+ ones, minimize that to a point where you cant really see it. Even then the part will need some kind of finishing. I personally don't enjoy clicking print at all as there is no satisfaction when its finished. For mass production, sure id do it, but not for this one of a kind.
I'm also going to be hiding electronics inside this model so printing one whole venture shape at once could be problematic. |

Here is where I am with the harvestor. The main tube looks big in the photo but is the perfect size, just a bit of visual foreshortening happening in the pic :) The curved tip was too small to practically make so I cheated there and used a tiny piece of a basic ballpoint pen, when the glue dries ill run my razer saw over the tip to get those grills/claw bits |

While the FoW rules could be re-jigged to fit, Spartan Games "Firestorm Armada" rules would possibly be more in tune and require a bit less work in the re-write department.
OP. Looks great so far, going to be hard work flying a gas harvester around using only the thrusters on an EVA suit

Why? you ask, the answer is this
I hate stock PC cases as there is never enough room and they all look the same a metal box on your desk, i have the internal design already made i just need the external model shape in a file format i can utilise in Autodesk inventor (if at all possible)
the planned case is a Deployed Kronos with Liquid cooling and 4 seperate computers inside said case with a dedicated lighting/liquid PSU if you could help me in any way with this project - i would sincerely appriciate it as i tried getting the info via CCP's petition system and the GM pretty much said "not happening, wont happen - look at the forums - triexporter blah blah blah nothing said was useful in any form as i had put up the petition AFTER trying to get the model extracted using triexporter.

Haven't checked this thread in some time, apologies.
Looking good so far...
You should totally do a Widow next *cough* *cough* Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person." |

Kiwi summer here at the moment so its been hard to justify staying inside to build spaceships haha. Plus I now have a new contract with Massey University NZ lecturing science fiction design
Hope everyone has been well over the last two months. Lets get this Venture on the road again!

For my next trick, I've hit a snag and finally coughed up a bit of $$!
I present to you the toughest most badass little foam cutter in the entire world:
The Proxxon Thermocut 230/E
This was one of the few tools used by the modelmaking team on The Hobbit trilogy all day long and we fed all sorts of foam through this thing, mostly polystyrene as that is one of the core products used on set. Its tough, we had only one and it lasted 4 years of everyday abuse plus the one spool of wire that comes with it was the only one we ever used. It must have like 20 meters of wire on it but we never ran out on the production.
We even made a jig so that we could feed 2400mm long sheets through it and it cut with ease haha
These are only $95 USD from amazon and is an absolute bargain for what you get.
On the other end of the spectrum I have recently started work with Massey University in Wellington, they have a couple of really nice machines too. If you have a few more dollars lying around, check out Manix hot wire cutters. Manix foam cutter
They are like the luxury option, Id love to own one myself but are much to expensive for me to afford at the moment.

Its finally here :D
My new hot wire foam cutter.
So now I can begin working on the structure that the turret sits on, and finishing off the harvester.
Ore cans, Ill make a really nice highly detailed version of this that will hopefully be reversible so then I can mould and cast 6 of them cutting down a lot of work.

Snag!!
The American way of doing electrical things is safer?? Lol? You run things at 115v where we run things at 240v. Had to save a few more pennies and buy a step-down voltage transformer. It's all up and running now and set to burn! (In a very controlled precise manner haha) |

Actually, it's the other way around. Higher voltage means lower amperage. And it's the amperage that kills, not the voltage. The reason 10,000V tasers don't normally kill is that the amperage is low. You're technically making your workplace more hazardous by using American electric current standards.
Therefore 230V/240V is safer than 115V/120V based on amperage being more dangerous. The math is as follows:
P = I*V Power (P) = Current (I) * Voltage (V) Watts = Amps * Volts
So in order to get the same Power (Wattage) with both systems, you need twice the Amperage.
*note: using 120V/240V for the example as it's cleaner, easier math. Also typical wattage in the USA is approximately 15A. Again, a round number so we'll use it too.
120V P = 15 Amps * 120 Volts P = 1,800 Watts [/quote wrote:
[quote="240V] 1,800 Watts = A * 240 Volts A = 1,800 Watts / 240 Volts A = 7.5 Amps

UPDATE
Unfortunately this is non-eve related, but fortunately its fcuking cool!
In NZ we have this competition which was started quite a few years ago to make am entire 7 minute long film in the span of 48 hours over a weekend.
I have entered in the competition the last 4 years in a row and this time was asked to take a role of Art Director for a very large one!
We had a crew of about 50 people and the prep time has taken up my last couple weeks organizing everything I could beforehand.
I cant show the current film but what I can show in my last two attempts.
48 Hour film festival
Film one in the puppet trilogy Dust Boot - Not One Tear
Second Dust Boot - Sleep Shepherds
The third I will show in due course when the rules allow! $50,000 real like ISK is up for grabs!

This thread is not dead!
Just to let people know I am still constructing my Venture! In a twist of pure awesomeness I'm now thinking that to keep it fresh and up to date I will now finish the colour scheme in that of the recently announced T2 variant, the Prospect.
I just need to extract a 3d model to get the shapes and sizes and we are off!
I have also been super busy modelling gold mining equipment for a series of dioramas in a museum, Links to those models below. Mining gear diorama 1 Model photo 2 Water jet cut parts for a functional stamper battery Static stamper battery model Cliffside railway Model photo 2

Good to hear about the updates.
Will the cliffside latest (non-eve related) diorama have actual running water? If a fish weighs 1 Kilogram plus half its own weight, how much does it weigh? (It's not 1.5kg btw) |

The one I showed won't, it will have simulated running water using clear resin. A very similar product to that used on the outside of new surfboards. |
