Well, before I discovered Eve I played a lot of Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. The gameplay of Eve reminds me a lot of Nexus. I enjoyed it enough to where I replayed and beat it multiple times (which is rare for me to do with a game). Freelancer was fun until the storyline mission was over, then it just ot repetitive.
I am in the process of checking out Homeworld 2. X3 also looks very promising, but my computer whimpers at the site of its graphics
What are your favorite space simulators?

I used to play a freeware game called Noctis . Its unique in that the game is based completely on exploration...there's a wealth of detail in terms of astronomy, there is a galaxy which rivals elite...plus you can land on planets and stuff. -------------------------------------------------- Loyalty, Integrity, Honour. |

Nexus was amazing to be fair, just it lacked the single player vs cpu option to make up your own battles. I think there's a program that lets you do it but I haven't tried it yet.

1. Homeworld 2. Elite 3. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident 4. Earth and Beyond 5. Freelancer.
P.S. X3 works fine with the 1.3 patch. Still sucks though. -- Proud member of the [23].

It fixes the performance--I went from 10 FPS on low details to 40 FPS on medium details.
But the game still sucks. -- Proud member of the [23].

Eve... duh...
I also have a bit of free stuff, like space station simulator, shuttle simulator and moon landing sim. I don't really play all that much space sims. I have played a few, but never very actively.

Freespace 2 is a hugely undervalued game, it's one of the greatest space sims out there, and it's sense of scale for the fleet battles is something I've never seen in a game before or since. For combat and pure adrenalin, it beats anything going (yes, even EVE). __________________________________________

The Star Control series... not really a sim, but a space game still. Grew up playing it. I still use the phrase "Launch Fighters!" to this day (sad, yes, but it's fun mkay?).

Homeworld was a great single player game, for the 5 or so minutes it took to complete. The gameplay was fairly poor, but the graphics and combat scenes carried it somewhat.
Master Of Orion 3 (didnt play the previous two) was absolutely awful. It got taken back to the shop a few days after it was bought.
Elite was the only truly good and lastable space game I ever remember playing.
Although the Starfox series on Nintendo was pretty damn good too :P

I recently got into freelancer and have been enjoying it very much.
Freespace 2 is utter class but if you track back further than that nothing touches Tie Fighter for amazing fights and the Dark lord of the sith himself. ___________

Independence War 1 & 2 are nowhere near as well known as they should be, given that out of all the titles mentioned so far they're the ones most accurately called a 'sim.' Semi-realistic physics which allow for some brilliant combat moves.

New SW game is a hell of a lot of fun too. They really did well with the space battles, simply because of the number of lasers flying around.
That's the top of my list atm, in no real order.
