So I've been running around 0.0 in my Helios hacking Data and Relic sites. I've never run a combat complex though. Here's what I want to do, and I want to know if it's possible and what suggestions anyone has. I want to spend a bundle of isk on a Tengu or Proteus - I can do either with high skills, though I've never bought one before. I want to fly around 0.0 safely, soloing the highest level of plexes I possibly can in areas of space where I might stumble across uber-valuable mod drops. I hate bubbles so I must have the interdiction nullifier and covert ops configurations. Yes, I know that messes with tank and dps, and one of my queries deals with this.
So the multiple parts of my query are: Which ship is better - any proposed fits gratefully accepted, as for every suggested one on BC there are plenty of comments saying "That ***** gonna die!"
I understand that there are areas of 0.0 run by NPC pirates where one can safely dock up in stations. That said, would it not be feasible to have two fits, one for the plexes and one for getting safely deep into 0.0. Once one gets there one docks up and changes to the fighting fit, at which point I'll be ok bouncing around nearby systems with my Helios alt scouting ahead for me. If this is indeed not a stupid idea, what would one switch out between the fighting fit and the travel fit?
Which areas of space will be best for my needs, i.e. 0.0 with dockable stations, plexes with baddies that drop good stuff, and baddies whose plexes are easy to complete solo with whatever ship/fit is suggested.
That's a really long question/s and my apologies for the long read. But all help greatly appreciated. |

I use a proteus in a vaguely similar role. IMO all 4 races T3s can do it sufficiently enough, though each has minor advantages and drawbacks depending on the NPCs in the region you are working. They all have an option for fitting type selectable damage. (drones for proteus).
Note that my usage - which is the proteus to complete escalations I've farmed up is generally viewed as a lot less aggressive by others than roaming space taking public sigs, so its likely my proteus will have an extended lifespan compared to one that is plexing everything everywhere.
You should be able to pay a T3 off in a few days though, so I wouldn't obsess about never ever ever ever losing it.

Also to deal with the fact that drones are large, AND subs are large AND ammo is big there is no reason when traveling about between stations you can't have some cargo extenders on a covops/nullfiied proteus. Just have to be extremely careful about undocking, if you get locked outside a station, a "Tokyo Express" proteus will splat quickly.

I have used both Tengu and Proteus a LOT. I pimp fitted them, but my goal was never consensual PvP. Only PvE.
Tengu seemed to tank better, and most importantly, if it capped out, the weapons keep firing. Invuln field got the passive resists nerfed, Heavy missiles lost range, and I haven't used a T3 since then, so Tengu probably isn't quite as good as it used to be.
Proteus has a small drone bay, and ecm drones let me be a little more aggressive. They allowed me to escape solo tackle on several occasions, and I have gotten kills in sites where the rats did my work for me :)Tank was really close, DPS was similar, but capped out = no guns. |

Thanks for those answers guys. Anyone have any insights into the location part of my query, i.e. if there are 0.0 regions with good loot drops in plexes, in areas where I could dock in non-player owned stations to switch between an anti-bubble travel fit and a plex fit? With baddies that one can clear a high level complex solo in a Tengu or Proteus? |

Venal, outer ring, syndicate for gurista and serpentis, there are smaller NPC spaces in geminate and pure blind with guristas. I'd presume that venal and syndicate belts can spawn officers. My experiences with syndicate was it was fairly hard to get the locals to leave you be, but is also very accessible and very broken up - ie different locals every few systems.

Thanks Tauranon. Could I ask you for your Proteus fit and how high a DED out of 10 rating you feel safe using it solo for? No worries if you prefer to keep it to yourself. |

Also, if I go without the change of fittings and go only with the covert/nullifier options, so I can travel anywhere in 0.0 without access to stations, what is the highest level of plex I'll be able to finish solo? Can I go as high as 7 or 8/10? |

I would not suggest you to blindly go to NPC null-sec regions. Whilst it certainly look better to be able to switch fits, thing is these regions are much more dangerous due to many PvP non-claim alliances living there.
I lived in NPC null-secs, I lived in claimed. And from my experience it's a bad, bad idea to try to rat in Curse or Stein. Even with scouting alt. Looks like you are not very experienced and I assume you will get caught in log-off camps, etc. So whilst it is quite possible that some npc null-sec regions are still safe and quiet, I would suggest you to begin in low-secs.
From my experience ppl living there are much less skilled in ganking/camping than habitants of Stein/Curse. So it will be good for you untill you feel you can try to visit claimed null-secs.
Since you can (and should!) scout with alt, you can skip Interdiction nullifier (especially if you go to low secs, where bubbles can not be created). But I suggest to use Covert subsystem at least for some time.
If we talk about ship selection I've never ever heard about any decent Proteus PvE fit. When I look at fits like this - http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/63680-Proteus-Solo-exploration.html I wonder if these people ever tried to visit even low-sec plexes at least once. Most of those fits are created just to look at high DPS/tank etc stats and feel cool about it.
It does not mean you can't rat with Proteus, however Tengu will do it better, faster, safer.
I farm Sansha/BR and as I know Tengu can solo most of plexes/expeditions from Sansha and Guristas. Including 10/10 and some really hard expeditions like The Ancient City afaik.
However it does not mean that YOU can do them. That is because station in 8/10 Sansha, and in some other plexes has sick tank (armor repping). To break it you need 1200+ DPS or....to use certain exploit that stops stations/overseers from repping.
Anyway I again recommend you to start from low secs. Dont waste your time doing relics there and don't waste your time doing data sites anywhere - it is not profitable comparing with relics in null secs and plexes.
Here is some fit for Tengu in Sansha space: [Tengu, New Setup 1] Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System Caldari Navy Ballistic Control System

A cloaky nullified T3 has the dps of a frig. This is unfortunate as it's exactly what you need for getting around. I flew though stain the other night and ran into 6 gate camps with drag bubbles and everything. Sooooo yeah.
Why not just do what others including myself do when in neutral territory: run 2 accounts. 1 with a cloaky-scouty-scanny-supporty-tanky T3 and a second one with some DPS brick like a marauder or faction bs to take care of business. Must have a spare high for a cloak while moving. Makes locking worse but that doesn't really matter that much in PvE anyway since you aren't gonna blap stuff that much. You just scout with the T3 for your brick and if there is trouble safe up and cloak.
Oh and mind you some plexes can be nasty for T3s. Neut towers completely wreck them aswell as web towers in some cases. Also many 8/10 and 10/10s loot structures tank like crazy. Some need over 600dps to break the tank and others over 2k dps. I'm pretty sure a covert config isn't gonna cut it, not sure about just the nullifier. If it does have the dps I still suspect it's gonna be like pulling teeth. |

You won't have the DPS to do it with a single T3, even if you spend a few bil on fittings. You will need either access to fittings services, or you'll need to put a standard cloak on the DPS ship and leave the scouting and scanning to a second ship, at which point your DPS can be a hac, a t3, or anything larger even.
Its my hope that the Stratios will change this. Fighting is Magic |

Even some 6/10s have overseers with a 800DPS tank which excludes most ships from soloing them.
This is where the new SOE ships will come in handy, put your Alt in one for scouting and then it can provide extra DPS for running the site. I sure hope they are not that expensive. |

Why do you want to go to null-sec per-se?
I have been comparing the "worth" of the "shiny" stuff dropping from 4-6/10 and 7-10/10 and it appears the 6/10's are the most valuable. This because there are no "Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane" or "Adaptive Invulnerability Field" in Battleship format. Expensive BPC's (Mach, Vindi, Nightmare) make up for some though.
The Angel 8/10 overseer building has an insane repair rate while you are inside 60-70km (don't remember exactly) of it. Which means your DPS is meaningless if you have no projection. With a solo T3 setup I imagine it might be pretty hard to complete a 9/10 or 10/10 aswel.
If you add bubbles to the equasion, balance would shift completely to low-sec, I'd imagine.
I've been cruising Great Wildelands a while myself, scout + Sentry MJD Dominix, and traveling was a pain in the ass! Now I just use MWD-Cloak trick on an Ishtar in low. |

The angel 8/10 is also extremely dangerous compared to a few other 8/10s. On the other hand, the angel (and serpentis) 10/10 has some excellent loot available and is super easy to solo. Fighting is Magic |

I've had 5 6/10s in a month in vale without roaming. 2 sigs and 3 escalations.

I use alt prober / scout in a cov ops frig and Ishtar for Guristas / Serps. Ishtar is better than T3 imo.
Proteus can run 10/10 Gurista / Serps but not with Nullifier / Covert Ops. It probably could but would take forever. In NPC null you have to be fast or your site will get stolen.
