Hey,
I know it's probably a bad timing to suggest changes of the skill-tree just after Odyssey - but perhaps it's somthing that can be considered in future addons.
I'd really appreciate if there was more possibility to specialize in ship-types. At the moment, I think it's rather a linear progression from figates to Battleships and Capitals, with Destroyers and Cruisers being more or less just a "step" on this way. You just fly small ships until you are able to fly bigger (and, somehow, better) ones. Of course there are some side-branches of the skill-tree, like Heavy Assault Ships and so on. But still, because for all of them you need the same core-competencies like Gunnery, Mechanics, Engineering and whatsoever, you are always able to change your specialization in about 10 days (things like E-war skipped out, I'm just talking about pure battle ships). So, when I'm able to fly a Battleship properly I will also be able to fly a Battlecruiser and it won't take me that long until I can fly a Heavy Assault ship. Which means someone who has invested a lot of training-time in fighting & flying skills will always be better than someone who has invested less time, no matter which ship he is flying. Which, in my eyes, sucks.
I personally don't want to fly anything bigger than a battlecruiser - it's some weird RP-thing, I just don't like those fat BS. But I see that this self-made restriction wont pay out - I can train as long as I want for "my" shipclass, someone who has trained just "Battle ships" (sic!, not Battleships!) in general will be as good as me in flying BCs. Of course I am able to fly a BS in a few days too - but thats not what I want.
So I would appreciate if investing more training-time in low-&mid-sized ships would lead to you being remarkably better in flying them than someone who has aimed for flying BSs & Capitals. You really should be able to compete with a BS although only flying a frigate, no matter if in PvP or PvE.
So how to do that?
First of all, I don't want to change anything about the skill-tree as it is - I think it's absolutely logically and okay that you need to train Cruisers in order to fly Battleships. I would just make the tree broader, adding more branches. Thus I would add skills like "Advanced Frigate Command", something that you don't have to learn on your way to bigger ships, but that gives a Bonus to flying the smaller ones. And I would split the Mechanics, Engineering etc. skills depending on your ship size. We already have that with Turret control, which is divided between small, medium and large. Why not do the same with Armor, shield, Propulison and so on, when there already are special modules for each ship size? Specialization for each ship type should need approximately the same time, so that mastering friagtes takes as long as mastering BS.
I guess this proposition is something many people won't like, because they want to be able to switch ship-types. But as described, they would be able to do so - they would just not be as good in those ships as people that spent more time training distinct classes. And I think it would make classes like frigates & cruisers more useful and "vivid", as they actually are just steps on the way to something better.
I'm looking forward to your answers! :)
Best Regards
