Hi there!
Let me introduce myself. I am a 10 year vet of the on-and-off variety, pve:r, miner, industrialist and now of the PVP (well trying to at least) sort. An occasional poster and otherwise anonymous person in EVE. I just wanted to address some of these stealth SOMERgate threads all the while trying to be constructive and inspirational (to some and not all) along the way. Or however the hell you may or may not take it. Here goes...
The whole SOMER Blink issue is overplayed. So many have chimed in on this subject and I am honestly tired of it. EVE+SOMER Blink = Marketing. Marketing to bring the Bad, the Good and the Ugly to the game. All flavors, all races, all manner of wants, needs and desires out of a sandbox that is awfully deep for those who happen catch the merest of glances (oh, btw let me introduce ytou to this game, it is great and once you get stuck in you will have hard time leaving). Those opposed and those for. We all have our opinions. We all want to feel special, but to follow the flavor of the game over the past ten years - you're not. I certainly am not - my existence in EVE is obscure and I have simply "rolled-with-the-punches" as far as new things and expansions go. If you manage to make it. Good. Great. But you still s**t sitting down (or at least I think so).
Right, where was I? Marketing, this somewhat weird and inalienable thing that deals with players (wants/needs/desires), it is at times something unfamiliar to the die hards and bitter vets who want EVE the way they want their revenge - a dish best served cold (and I am not saying that all die hards and bittervets think this way). It is about the future and not the past. New players, old players, evolution and the future of EVE - now and ten years from now. We want bloodshed, pods that go pop, mayhem and all other things chaotic all the while bringing new blood to the game. We want fodder for our smartbombs, drones or whatever the hell else EVE has given us wreck destruction on the innocent, the guilty and whomsoever else that we deem worth of a charge up the Khyber (i.e. happens to cross our crosshairs). We want to watch the world burn, us with it and out of that chaos begins something anew.
Sure, you may argue it was unfair to the rest of the community or something, this argument is nothing new and nothing but a show of bitter vet tears or that you didn't give enough credit to Goons (who unabated have set the tone for EVE these past 6-7 years - with a tip of the hat to all levels involved past, present and future) , but the fact still remains - How do we move forward, as CCP, as Devs, as GMs, as ISD, as players of this game? What draws new blood in? What makes those *fracking* (pardon the BSG euphemism) ships go pop in a beautiful shower of metal shards and sparks? What makes it possible to survive as a MMO in todays day and age. Destruction vs Creation. Good vs Evil. The age old argument rears its head.
Will those who reap the benefits of winning (blinking home) a Guardian-Vexor jealousy guard their treasure or will they say screw it, let the damn thing pop majestically ("in-a-blaze-of-glory") for the betterment of having more players, more cannon fodder, more industrialists, more miners, more pvpers, more nasty pirates and more of everything simply because it is space pixels and we plow our hearts and souls into the thing that lets us unfettered be whatever our hearts desire. Mongrel. Wastrel. Dilettante. Havoc seeking entity bent on destruction. Or creative, filled with zest and joie-de-vivre of being productive and reaping the benefits of others misfortune to the tune of some soundtrack that was created back when the game was released. I don't know about you but I keep coming back for more.
And after this wall of text I ask you this: "Are you not entertained?"

Hello!
Allow me to introduce myself. I am Erotica 1. You may have heard of me. Over a year ago, I took the old isk doubling scam and created an honest game out of it. You may have seen the many forums threads, minerbumping.com articles, and other internet discussions regarding my now-famous honest isk doubling game.
If not, I'd like to extend a warm welcome! As a special promotion, I am entering all players into a drawing to win one of my Ishukone Watch Scorpions. Every investment counts as an entry. I thoroughly enjoyed your post and look forward to seeing you around.

Absolutely, but to those feeble of mind it is perhaps too much and thus they must resort to that age old axiom: teal; deer.
Read and find some inspiration since things that matter are not writ in stone. Stop. Smell the roses and have some fun once in a while. Or get exorbitantly drunk, yell at a lamppost and wake up next to a walrus. Your choice. Regardless, thank you for playing the Kumamoto roulette. I see a lot of words. I read those words, and came away thinking "Wait, what was the point?"
Are you saying that this event will provide marketing through "Eve-is-real" type stories? That the gaming media will pick up on it, and people will say "hey, that looks like a cool game. People get free stuff". I doubt very much that the player with this type of mentality will last very long. Sure, their $15 is worth the same as your $15, but I can't see them contributing much to the community besides complaining when they don't get free stuff. Now sure, there could theoretically be a situation where someone wins a shiny, and goes all Rambo and looses it in a blaze of glory. And it'd be fun and all. It'd probably get some media exposure, even if just on the local EVE fansites. But the big stories that people say draw them to EVE don't involve one yahoo going out and loosing a month's salary worth of ingame items. They for the most part involve month-long campaigns, or intricate scams, or massive fleet fights. I just can't see a realistic scenario where giving a random person a shiny ship results in masses of new subscriptions.
Are you saying that people have focused too much on the event, and need to move on? In that case, why bring it up again? People enjoy complaining. Let them vent, everyone knows they're venting, and people have stopped taking them seriously weeks ago. Thus by posting about it, people aren't taking you seriously either.
I'm sorry this came across as snarky, it's always refreshing to read a post that someone puts effort into, instead of the mental diarrhea that is so very common in these parts. [/sarcasm] |

Yes, and you have a point, but I want people/players to look beyond the simplicity of the issue and look more towards the potential - the roadmap, the next few years expansions. Sure we may not know what is stirring at CCP HQ, but we shouldn't be so quick to judge either. It may be about the here and now, but it is as much about next summer and so on...
I have hung around for 10 years. The times I have stopped playing have been about RL issues, work and leisure intermingled vs time devoted to EVE. Most agree that it is part acceptance, part acknowledging that EVE is part of you, part resignation to the fact that EVE is and can be a passion. Most of what I write in terms of posts and/or comments is meant as "tongue-in-cheek", i.e. part irony, part sarcasm but meant in good fun.

So what is the problem they try to solve when promoting an EVE casino that no one outside EVE cares about and knows about. Hell I don't even think someone who hasn't played EVE gets the idea of what somer blink is. So in what way would that be a good marketing instrument to get new players?
I don't believe the marketing/promotion argument, it makes no sense at all. And I don't believe the community service story either. I don't think I have to repeat the rest of the arguments why this just smells like a personal favor, they are all over the other now locked threads. |

And so we come full circle. Sorry, but your credibility is moot, my obscurity is not and due to the nature of EVE I will call you out for being a hack, shyster or whatever you call an individual who chooses to spend his or her time doing what you do. EVE is to some extent free in terms of expressing ones displeasure with an individual and their choice of vocation.

Ok. Fine. But I still think people too quick and too often cry wolf - specially after T20/BoB. You could argue that allowing hires of Devs with close ties to large alliances should be scrutinized without mercy and their positions within CCP held to a point where they cannot impact the game in a manner that would sway the game in such a way that it favors their original "masters". This is my opinion in regards to this since I am of the opinion that no single individual is ever so impartial or neutral and will fundamentally fall back to "old" habits. Most of what I write in terms of posts and/or comments is meant as "tongue-in-cheek", i.e. part irony, part sarcasm but meant in good fun.

OP posted his opinion on a controversial topic that sparked numerous discussions; Erotica 1 made a post to give a perfect example why the OP is wrong; OP and now you attacked Erotica 1 on a personal level - which is against the rules btw - without adressing her argument, without being provoked and without discernable reason.
I don't think I can agree with you.

Next thing we know, we'll be hearing from the tinfoil hat wearers the longrunning theory that I'm also in Goons, even an alt of both James 315 and the Mittani. Of course such ideas are silly, but internet spaceman forums breed those sort of ideas.
