Apologies for the title ... here is the background:
Technology, media and social interactions are evolving very quickly nowadays. Four years ago I could have only dreamt of this, but now it could make sense... and given CCP willingness to go quite far experimenting leading edge stuff e.g. Oculus, I am going to suggest it because it looks to me that VR is getting more a more a need rather than a feature. I was looking at another thread where someone mentioned about using audio to communicate with other users... well I thought, yes, but it would be best to use video... but then I thought... hmmm, how can that be suitable when everybody has an avatar? so no video because I have to use my avatar. But... video, avatar... why not get the expression of my face, mouth, eyes, movements, etc through a webcam and animate my avatar? that would be f********************* awesome. So I could have meaningful conversations and reflect either my anger or satisfaction when I tell off that mofo ... not mention that this would bring the social interactions to a whole new level. I am pretty sure CCP DEVs are skilled enough to make this, in view of the fantastic character wizard they already have. Just tailor movements to the input from the webcam. You may think, AH! issue with bandwidth! I say NO. What you do is read the points on my face by using my webcam and then send them to the other client, which will render them on my avatar... result: efficient, ultra cool feature which BTW, if you look at the character wizard, is basically already there, ready to be exploited
So now hate me, or like me... I want this!

Something about using webcams to animate the character portraits, is that right? Would I require a webcam to use EVE at all, or is this optional?
Also, know that every face is structured differently so your expression'll be completely different from what your avatar does, not to mention crappy webcams distorting the readings and some people pointing the webcams to their genitals for funsies. |

That would require insane amount of resources, especially looking at how EVE's characters are built/detailed.
Portraits are static snapshots. Generating everything realtime sounds godawful. Plus, as I've recently found out, facial animations aren't advanced enough to include sticking out your tongue for instance. Is it Hotdrop O'Clock yet?

But of course this is for one to one chat video / audio chat. You can't expect every avatar to be animated at the same time. You could have up to x number of parties involved for corp board meetings etc. I do not think this would be much resource intensive. |

Motion capture. The idea that actors will be replaced by warm bodies (i.e. cheap nobody actors) to animate avatars (aka glamorous actor/actress) on screen has been around for a while in sci-fi. The Japanese have a computer generated pop star, Hatsune Miku. With motion capture, kinetic, and movies such as Avatar, the tech is becoming more practical.
However, I don't think it's quite practical/cheap enough to animate MMO avatar faces to convey body language, etc..
