Current we use AU as a means of warping between gates, it takes such a long time to travel using AU, can we introduce Parsecs PC/sec for battleships??? It took me over an hour to travel 30 jumps. While it's fun to just watch spaceballs while clicking each gate during long travel times it really kills immersion.
How would people feel about having AU and Parsecs as a travel speed? I would pay ISK to travel faster. I would pay Aurum.
Congratulations. You've now discovered that EVE is one of the few MMOs left that offers its players a sense of scale when they move in the game world. This is a rare treat. |

And you do know those are actual famous lyrics by Queen?
That said, please educate me (seriously, I do not have a clue): what (if any) is the speed of sound in space? Since there is no medium present to carry any waves, how could that one be calculated? |

A Parsec is a UNIT OF DISTANCE, NOT SPEED or TIME. I thought this got famously cleared up in 1977. I guess not.
An Astronomical Unit [AU] is also a measurement of distance. 1 AU can also be calculated into time with the speed of light as the base of measurement as 8 light minutes.

For reference, light takes 8 minutes and 20 seconds to travel 1 AU. Electromagnetic waves inside the warp bubble have the same speed as electromagnetic waves outside the warp bubble. To be precise: The ship inside the warp bubble doesn't move at all. Actually, nothing inside the warp bubble moves during warp travel. Edit: And to be even more precise: One could say that not even the warp bubble moves. It changes it's relative position, yes, but not because it moves, but because it changes space surrounding it. To compare: A common misunderstanding is that people say that galaxies within our real universe drift apart, which isn't the case. It's just that the distances between galaxies increase, because the size of the universe increases. Mind. Blown. End of nitpicking. Minor point of information: V1489 Cygni is about 7.67 AU across. It takes light 1.06 hours for light to cross it's diameter.
...and we can bounce across a black hole in a few seconds in an interceptor...

Just to give you something to think about. 1 AU/s equals roughly 500 times the speed of light, the Leopard we got for Christmas does about 10,000 times the speed of light, and that's before implants. EVE ships are pretty speedy as it is. |

How about a ship that can be like a mage from WoW and can open portals. In WoW, when those poor helpless worthless carebears who are too risk averse to play Eve want to travel somewhere fast, they use a mage with a portal.
Opening portals from one place to another place for instant travel is just so carebearish, WoW-ish, and wrong....

Math, because I like it.
Let's take a look at the new Leopard shuttle. It's base warp speed is 20AU/s
The speed of light is 1,079,244,000 km/h An Astronomical Unit is 149,597,871 km
So, traveling at 20AU/s would mean you were traveling at 2,991,957,420 which is 1.75 times FASTER than the speed of light.
However, since a shuttle is a small ship, and a battleship is a large ship, it would only seem logical that it would move slower. Just think, you could be flying a freighter or an Orca or something. Then it would REALLY take a lot of time to get around.

ehm, a little bit quicker than that actually. I'll use rough numbers, but you'll get the idea. 1 AU = 150,000,000 kilometres. 1 c = 300,000 kilometres per second. 1 AU/s = 150,000,000 / 300,000 = 500 c 20 AU/s = 20 * 500 = 10,000 c So a good bit quicker than you're suggesting. |

Ahahahaha that's a good one. Just because we don't know anything that moves faster than light, that doesn't mean that there is nothing faster than light. In the dark ages alot of things were thought to be impossible till they got proven wrong. ;) Same goes for all the people who think that Earth inhabits the only intelligent life in the universe.
Just because we haven't seen or heard about something yet, that doesnt means it is impossible but such a thing is the usual reaction for the human brain. |
