This is a nifty little util
http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/
Allows you to generate and store 100s of secure passwords, whilst only having to remember one.

I make all my passwords the sounds I hear from round-housing people in the cranium.

One useful one I've seen is based upon words in the dictionary and numbers.
Firstly produces two random words, say "cheese" and "sheep", then converts those to l33t, and adds a single digit at the beginning/middle/end:
1cheese2sheep3 becomes: 1ch33s325h33p

There's always a comedian in the group.
There are some very good suggestions in this thread about maintaining password security. My current Eve password is 10 characters long and includes at least two numbers. I'm not going to go into any further, because some things do need to be kept secret.

This thread shows just how little people understand about passwords to be honest - replacing letters with numbers, adding numbers to phrases, in fact, using anything that is a corruption of a real word or words in any way, is about as useful as having your password as '12345678'.
I wrote a thread about how to have a secure password a while back. That site covers the same subject in more detail. Regardless of who the guy is, he's right in saying that a randomised, alphanumeric password with characters in is the best pw you can have.
Whoever suggested headbutting the keyboard is onto the right idea.

The problem is not 1 password.
The problem is not a password for a site/game you login to once a day.
The problem is having 25 such sites, each wanting a password, some of which you only use once every 2 months. Then having passwords for your computer at work, which you have to change every 2 months.
I got a good memory, but if you think I'm gonna memorize 25 passwords....
They really ought to come up with something better, like the RNG-tokens that some banks use for login.

Edited by: Wulfstan on 02/02/2006 15:38:08 Has anyone attempted a brute force attack against Eve then? Does the Eve client send logins over secure sockets?
IMO it's much more likely your passwords will be stolen by a keylogger trojan or suchlike than you being subjected to a brute force *****, so it doesn't really matter how complex your password is if you keep it on your PC.
I make sure my PC is patched up to date, running realtime anti virus and anti spyware software. A firewall (not the built in XP one) has rules showing what software can and can't access the Internet. Then I throw in manual scans with rootkit revealer every so often.
I keep my passwords on an encrypted volume and run NTFilemon to keep an eye on what accesses the file. IE if I open it in Notepad then NTFilemon should only show that notepad has accessed the file. The password to the encrypted volume is only stored in my head.
That's the best I can do. I keep really important stuff like banking details mixed up on paper and the PC so neither one along would be enough to gain access to real money.
Edit: ***** = c.r.a.c.k
