Edited by: Samor Madur on 27/02/2006 16:36:07 The best fiction ever! Makes me proud to be a part of this game and community. The story telling is perfect and to get to know EVE history like this is awsome. Thanks CCP.
Just hope we get to see the Omega chapter. Feeling there is still much to write about.

The way I see it, this paves the way for Joves to enter the game with playable characters and equiptment. The problem that has been nagging me about them is that they're uber and everyone wants to be one. It ends up looking very similar to the Jedi Problem in SWG.
If we had another race that was on par or superior to the Jove, it might allow game balance to be maintained. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Alpha and Omega, beginning and end. :) There was a Alpha "prelude" section and there appears there should have been an Omega "epilogue" section as well. Gnauton seemed to indicate it would be published on Monday, but nothing yet. -- Lil Miner |

It would make game balance into "balance between the Jove and the other race", leaving the four current races in the dust.
No, what I think would be better is the following - Joves are not better than the other races. By the time they are released, their ships aren't much better than top-of-the-line empire ships either. You can't choose to be a Jove at character creation; rather, a PC can eventually become a Jove through genetic modification.
By making a Jove PC something somewhat hard to get and not much better, you would keep their numbers low. -------------------- Do you have a solution to the BM and instas problem? Test it against the bookmark requirements. |

Absolutly remarkable work. Awsome.
So we know better about who is the traitor who condemn our navy in the jove/amarr war. That's also learns us why they finaly became unaccessible.
Well too bad Faus died :(. He would have done a wonderfull emperor. Well this story make me thinking if a sarum member was not at the origine of the Doriam Assassinations.
P.S. There must be something else that make us unable to conquer the jove territories. Or try to allow us to come into it. Because more than logically we CAN jump into. How ? Remember jumpdrive ? We don't need ANYMORE the stargate, we just need to focus the jumpdrive of a titan (let's say the remaining Avatar class Titan sleeping in a dark hangar of the Amarr Navy) on one of the gravitic signature of the jove's sun and WOOSH. Here come the reclaiming. -------------------------- On the 8th day. Over created the mods. To have a good laugh. |

Unless there are hard caps on the precentage of players allowed to become Jove (which is a very artificial restriction), you won't be able to keep large swaths of players from doing it.
Have you ever played SWG? You'll sometimes hear players saying that it's too easy to become Jedi. It's not true, though, and I think it's important to study the reasons why whenever an MMORPG wants to keep a certain player class rare. Here's how you became a Jedi when the game was released:
There are about 30 professions (far less with recent changes). When your character is created, 5 professions are chosen at random, though you aren't told what they are. If you get the master level in all 5, the Jedi profession will open up to you. Holocrons (fairly rare items) will tell you what one of the professions is, though they'll never tell you the last one. Some professions have a prerequisite profession (like you need to master Artisian before becoming a Droid Engineer), so you can't necessarily grind one straight profession at a time.
Once players learned how to optimize grinding each profession, you could often master each profession in a few hours. However, it'd be a very boaring few hours, tediously clicking the same sets of buttons over and over, or attacking the same spawns, etc. Basically, the same types of players who happily jet mine Veldspar for hours and hours could easily become Jedi in a few weeks on this system.
So the fast path to Jedi is boring and in all fairness, I would have thought myself that this grind path would be enough to keep Jedi rare. But Jedi actually became very common. Additionally, it caused markets to crash as Jedi grinding the crafting professions would sometimes toss their wares on the market at a loss, making it impossible for players who really wanted to be crafters to be profitable, especially at the more basic levels.
The Jedi path was later turned into a quest-based system. I left the game not long after that (over other issues), but it's hard to tell if a quest-based system would have worked better if it was that way from the start. I don't think anything would have fixed the Jedi problem once they already became common. (That's not quite true. I'm sure the recent mass-exodus of SWG players has made Jedi rare ).
The big lesson in this is that if you give an uber-powerful item/ability/class/whatever that a lot of players want, it is easy to underestimate the resolve of players to get it. At the game's introduction, the profession-based Jedi system should have been, by all reasonable predictions, enough to keep Jedi rare. But the evidence that came later clearly showed that it wasn't.
This is a difficult problem to solve in a natural way. Any hard cap on numbers will seem unfair to players (see also: any t2 BPO thread). Anything that requires constant grinding will be overcome by players who are currently jet mining veld for many hours a day (and anyone else with a similar mentality).
IMHO, if we can't keep the Jove population low, then the next best option is to balance them against something else and then allow anybody to become Jove (or Jove's enimies). ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

The order are oviously people from people from earth the jove jsut don't know it. It would make sense since i don't see any other way for them to have such advanced technology since the joves achieved spaceflight again after jsut three centuries. Unless there aliens. Perhaps the people who created the solar system in which all it's plants are habitable to organic life.
