I don't see it, the reason so many EVE players rail against EVE becoming popular? Frequently cited is that it would attract terrible people, the likes of WOW has never seen.
The EVE community has its shining stars, and its flaming e-tards. Probably more of the former TBH. The average EVE player however, a brilliant bastion of character, maturity, and reason is not.
What exactly are people worried about losing? Tell me again about how every playstyle you dont engage in "doesn't require any effort" and everyone who does it needs to die in a fire. Be sure to mention about how you tried it once but it was too easy/boring/ethnic-homophobic slur.-á |

Because EVE is like that quiet cinema you finally found to frequent for your entertainment needs that historically has had very few screaming children, or obnoxious people talking on their cell-phones when you patronize it. As such, the last thing you want is for that cinema to start catering to people who take their children to adult-themed movies and those who like to talk on their cell phones.
The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the ho's and politicians will look up and shout 'Save us!' and I'll look down, and whisper 'Hodor'. |

I don't know everything must come to an end someday, but Ultima Online is still going on at least.
I suppose EVE will continue on for sometime. I doubt it will get any more popular than it is now. Most of the subs now are old players with more alts. "Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby". If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down. |

Meh, Help channel is about the nicest "community" I have encountered in any MMO, but it is moderated. As for actual community I have little experience except these forums which are a cesspool of hatred the likes of which WoW is not even close to competing against.
It is a bit like a narcissist, looks great to the outside community but the people familiar with it, the family and relatives, the actual player community, know better but tout it's virtues to be spared the rage and fury or loss of investment.
EVE is pretty stale from my limited perspective. Goon rules and everyone else falls in line and that is about it.
It is like being the new kid in town and going to the local hobby shop. You are never going to have your own campaign, even if you rent your own table and time, because the upper echelon has not only been decided and "won" but are typically not even playing anymore so there is no way to affect change. Imagine if you will a game, filled with 12 year olds who spam the petition button whenever they lose a "pvp" match because their opponent obviously used hacks and cheated.
Imagine, local, filled with even more chatter about your mothers exploits in the bedroom for money.
Imagine, constant TiDi because everyone is ISboxing 500 free accounts in the Ice belt each.
Imagine the forums, flooded to absolute server capacity with crybaby former WoW players wanting arena style pvp because highsec doesn't have enough fair fights, and low/null/WH makes their huggies pull ups fill with stinky fear paste.
Imagine, the sobbing of bittervets when they find that their 10 years of skill training don't mean **** when you can buy a Golden Megathron with built in 500% damage stats and 1000% tanking bonus due to their 30 day Armor boosters from the EAVE store.
Now imagine, that all of this could be avoided, by everyone just paying their subscriptions and shutting the **** up about F2P/P2W. Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

Yeah. That would be a problem. The solution would be to make it so you have to pay for the game or pay for a permit to mine ice with real money. You can donate the proceeds to Erotica 1. "Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby". If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down. |

And then you discover everyone but you is masturbating.
I mean, I love EVE but open up the blinds and you have **** jokes in corp names, 9/11 suicide ganks, bigotry, bullying. Really, there are some disgusting stories out there about us.
I'm not going to go on a "let force decency" tirade about how none of these things should be permitted, because I don't necessarily think that. But I have certainly been knocked off my high horse about EVE being a very adult acting community, even if it is mostly an adult community. Noone's talking about EVE being popular is somehow bad, people just don't want to be a part of tradeoff that will possibly be made in order to acieve that.

EVE going "mainstream" for lack of better words, would also (most likely) make it less of a harsh universe that it is, as new eden prolly couldn't handle 5 million griefers without a very strict set of rules and aids in form of game mechanics.
EVE is not for the average gamer, it's for the dedicated gamer that plans to invest years into the game. I fear the wide audience is not willing to do that and such the game would be forced to retain the 6 month gamers rather than the 2 year ones.

Because more people would play eve if it was free? I honestly don't think that's true at all.

That's probably the biggest locked door, the fact it can take a year to actually be good at any one thing. The idea that you won't really be useful to your corp or alliance in your preferred role for two or three actual years.
I actually left EVE for a long time, never unsubbed but never played. Now, thanks to a little "why not" attitude I can fly a T3 with all the SP i got while not playing. For people who notice the bank account dipping by $15 every month I think this scenario plays out differently. /c When I came to eve I didn't even know what a "hardcore" gamer was. I didn't understand EvE at all... I just knew: spaceships! cool! It takes a few months of playing, but when you start to 'get it' it opens up a whole new world for you... I think a lot of mainstream gamers just don't 'get' EvE yet, but when they do it may change how they play and how they view games and what's possible in general. I think educating the potential client base is the only hurdle.... a lot of people would be changed by EvE if they just gave it a chance.
EvE may not be for the "average" gamer... but once the "average" gamer plays enough EvE, I think they will cease to be "average".

How do you know anything about the Average EVE player?
Most EVE players play quietly, don't post on or read forums, and never make the news.
But as for your question of why EVE players rail against EVE becoming some crappy thing that appeals to the masses? Because most crappy things that appeal to the masses do not appeal to us.
Most MMO players ( a subset of video gamers in general) can't stand the things that make EVe great like it's "death penalty", universally available non-consensual pvp, CCPs light handedness about things most other game companies would call "griefing" and so forth. Most MMO players want and need to be spoon fed content and flop around like a fish with no fins in a sandbox game.
No thanks. EVE should stay Beverly Hills, not become South Central LA. |
