Why have PLEX for Good drives been stopped? I very much enjoyed the option of turning my pixel space money into real-world assistance. For those who have joined since the last one, these are periods of time where CCP collects PLEXs, which players donate to specific CCP-controlled players ingame. CCP then removes the PLEXs from the game, and donates the equivalent monetary worth to a charity.
But there hasn't been any large-scale disasters lately. I'm sure there are still charities that operate 24/7, regardless of media coverage of headliner catastrophes.
But they always use Red Cross, and I don't personally support that organization. Ok, why can't they set up a rotating schedule? For example, every month pick a different charity. Once month it's for a 3rd world development-related charity. Next month is for a food distribution-related one. Next it's for sick children... Or, set up, say, 5 separate collector characters, with each one being for a specific charity. So that any PLEX donated to that character will have its equivalent monetary worth donated to that charity. It would give people more choice in where they send their support.
But it'll drive PLEX prices up. Possibly. Or maybe not. I'm not an economist. If it got bad they could put more time between them. It's been, what, a couple years since the last one? Surely it wouldn't do any permanent harm to have another one.
But I don't want to participate. No one is forcing you to.
But this takes resources - employees' time to organize, financials to process, etc. Fair point, I have no idea how much time it takes to organize these events. But if people are willing to spend their free time developing Ocullus Rift prototypes, or that 2-d arcade version of EVE seen at Fanfest, surely there's someone willing to donate some time to this. Plus it'd be good publicity, surely that's worth something to the company.
Did I miss any reasons why this is a terrible idea? Does anyone remember dev posts about why they stopped doing them? [/sarcasm] |

I have no idea what you are talking about.
Something about PLEX.
Something about Red Cross.
Something about charity.
Is this a stealth "SOMER BLINK 'Redacted'" thread?
These guys...
They get sneakier and sneakier with their stealth. Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the comedian is the only thing that makes sense.

These days it's hard enough to find a charity outside of the Red Cross where the majority of the donated money doesn't go straight to CEO salary, bonuses or PR.
The idea of being able to convert in-game ISK to a real-life donation that helps people is pretty amazing though. God knows some players in the game could single handed donate a few hundred dollars that way without it even seriously hurting their wallet (in-game or out).
I'd like a fund raising drive for smaller charities throughout the year (as long as there aren't any major disasters). Community level charities that impact small areas of cities or towns. The kind of things you see in that TV show 'Secret Millionaire'.
There's plenty of stuff to donate to. If CCP has the resources to make stuff like this happen a few times a year that would be an awesome way of making a contribution to the world. Making EVE real, one step at a time. My YouTube Channel - EVE Tutorials & other game related things! |

I think the biggest issue is that as soon as they started doing them, the forums became flooded with:
"Why no PLEX drive for X event?"
People found something for every day of the week.
While donating to charity is nice, they are still a business that needs to make money. Charity is not good for profits. Even with tax breaks.

Given the current crisis in EvE
I would be for supporting a small community based (not our community but a small city establishment some where in the world, sorry thought I would add this to remove confusion) Gamblers Anonymous that is suffering from a lack of funds.
I know it sounds like a dig, but honestly it would be nice to help EvE re-balance the scales on this. Any spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors are because frankly, I don't care!! |

Would you volunteer to accept the plex to give out to the gambling addicts once they go through our 12 step program? See Bio for isk doubling rules. -áIf you didn't read bio, chances are you helped fund those who did. |

No but I would agree to the idea of sending a gambling anonymous community venue a cheque from CCP at the cost of our plex donations. My guess as to why the PLEX for good drives stopped is that they were based on writing off donations given from CCP's profits against taxes. In recent years I suspect surplus cash has been a bit harder to find.
However, CCP Eterne posted this in Vaerah Vahrokha's long running PLEX for Good charity thread in MD a few days ago.
CCP Eterne wrote:Just to let people know, we are currently discussing our next charity drive. I am unable to comment if it will be a PLEX for Good drive like in the past, but we have not abandoned our charity initiatives.
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=postmessage&t=68059&f=253&q=3796145
So, it looks like something might be on the horizon soon.
Btw, anyone wanting to make a donation in advance is encouraged to do so via VV's charity. She collected and donated over 100bil for the last charity drive and is currently sitting on another 100 or so waiting for the next one. If you want to leave the game but have your assets do something worthwhile this is a great way to do it. Even if you don't want to leave the game you can still make a difference in the real world with some of your isk.
As for those bringing the Somer stuff into this thread, please don't. There are two types of EVE player:
those who believe there are two types of EVE player and those who do not. |

Yes I did bring that stuff into this thread.
But I would actually like to donate plex to a Gamblers Anonymous.

Among other things, it comes down to how much this program was used. I don't know where I can pick up numbers (if there's such a place), but if it's not much then I can see CCP not supporting the program anymore. |

I don't. If you give it money to "help" the victims of a California wildfire, for example, it uses the money to buy a shiny new truck so that it can be filmed in the next advertisement for donations to help victims of California wildfires.

Because Eve players simply don't care? If you honestly believe that any measurable portion of the users of Eve Online are of the mindset to give anyone anything out of charity, you should check the dictionary and make sure your picture isn't next to the word "gullible".

There are as many causes as there are people who post here.
The few times CCP has tried to do the right thing in supporting some of these, the whiners came out in droves demanding that the one they like is more worthy. Arguments and threadnoughts took over page one as usual and CCP backed off supporting anything.
Can you blame them?
