Welcome Back, with carbonization mostly complete (im still seeing evidence its not entirely done yet) they should be able to fix alot more things much more quickly than ever before.
Now only if all the npc rats got better AI and gameplayability to teach players maybe they should pvp fit up a bit more.

Seems to me that this is "PLAN-B"
since microtrans flopped big time and CCP realized they couldn't make up for lost revenue by tempting existing players to spend flipping great wadges of cash on digital junk.
So they decided to boost subs the old fashioned way and are fixing and adding all those little things brushed off over the years as "welp thats just the harsh cold reality of eve" and that lost them a bit of young players and decent revenue.
it seems to me to be a choice between getting more cash and keeping eve the murderous playground it was or get new subs by severely reducing the harshness curve for n00bs and bears
bottom line is they need the money and will get it in whatever way works the best for everyone (in theory) The American public's reaction to the change was poor and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula, re-branded as "Coca-Cola Classic", resulted in a significant gain in sales, leading to speculation that the introduction of the New Coke formula was just a marketing ploy |

Morganta does bring up interesting discussion point.
Its very reasonable reason notion I can agree with. The 80 monocles sold in the first week was 240 months of subs being paid for them, yet its expected that this milestone cannot be met every week and wouldn't surprise me if the number of monocles being sold in the subsequent weeks cannot handel or recuperate the possible pernament loss of est 3,000 subs which would have been much more than the 80 monocles ever where able to replace.
Yet I would not be surprised if CCP continues to expand the microtransaction store and incarna, as arbitarly they did spend alot of money on these things and eventually every item in the NeX store WILL Pay for itself off in raw cost, eventually and then subsequentently start paying incarna off which I imagine was a multi million dollar project that is going have to rely on supposed sub increases due to incarna to pay off.
CCPs focus on FiS probably was attributed to the above, the environment was ripe for harvesting the FiS is though the colmunation of Project Carbon being more completed than to years ago when it started. So with thier largest bottleneck mostly out of the way, and now more than ever before more folks are on working staff that actually wrote most of the game and know its insides and how they work truely should be able to make much more effective and efficent changes with much less breaking of unrelated things.
Art Teams are now back in space with a small section still doing interiors. Core Team is off of Carbon and Incarna and onto New Eden again. Network Teams is likely already shifted after Incarna launched to the Dust Project.

One of the problems with Incarna are, that CCP forces themselves into short development circles.
One expansion every 6 month puts a lot of pressure on the teams and the problems with unfinished Dominion, Tyrannis, Incursion and Incarna are, that CCP is willing to cut important features and release unfinished content rather then saying that the 6 month time period is too short to do a proper job and the development have no time to complete their work because, because of development of the next expansion.
Incarna and the NEX store could have been handled differently and if CCP had included the 4 CQ together, in a more complete state and with multiplayer features then it would have been interesting. Now we get the 4 improved CQ but still no multiplayer and the development seems to be on hold indefinatly, which is a shame.
I was defending Incarna and CCP after the release, saying it was just a prototype of the real expansion, but now it seems we will never get the proper Incarna expansion. |

carbon is why they can change the UI scalling now
Carbon is why they can put in quick number based balaning changes without messing with code anymore.
Carbon is the tech behind the new shadow engine
Carbon is behind a lot of the planet effects

Carbon in itself == win. Incarna, WiS, absolute fail MT == fail.
As Morgana mentions, the winter expansion of BIG FiS changes/updates/awesome definitely has a "plan b" feel about it. Not so much that the stuff feels like they're rushing, or that things will be terribad broken ... but in that with all the updates/fixes/new ships/modules/etc it kind of feels like CCP is saying "hey guys! see, we still love you! please come back!"
Not that I'm complaining by any means. The Winter Expansion is just the first steps along a VERY long road for CCP to get back on track. Hopefully they'll stick to "keep people happy" for the following expansions (and DUST). |

Valkris Arkayne wrote:The DREAM of Incarna was brilliant - in-station and in-ship interaction, player-crafted clothing and items, player-run establishments, an expanded market/economy for station items, new gameplay options such as minigames, multi-player board rooms, and real-time status maps from other sectors. Properly implemented, Incarna could have brought in ten to hundreds of thousands of new players from the sim-crowd (the largest cut of players worldwide).
The DELIVERY of Incarna was a horrinble mess - only one room, no multi-player, no new gameplay, no new crafting, items for sale on the NEX store, a second currency system, code that overheated computers... and to top it all off, CCP released items that cost $40 to $70!! A monacle for $70, and no where to show it off !? Most micro-trans games price their items reasonably at $2 - $15... so the $70 monacle showed just how far off base CCP was from their players.
The backlash from both FiS and WiS players was astounding. FiS players were rightly annoyed that the space game had been neglected with zero payoff, and the WiS players were annoyed that 5 years of development resulted in a one-room cell, when lesser companies have created entire games in less time. As a result, subscriptions took a hard dive.
Since then, CCP has declared that they're going to re-focus on the space game. I don't see how ship trails, ship spinning, and new nebulae qualify as 'content', but that's where we are at the moment.
My activities in EVE will soon be little more than reading the newsletter and waiting for Incarna to come back... at which time I'll re-subscribe.
I'd like to point out to you that the RMTs were just supposed to be part of Incarna. There were other features, such as corp owned bars, that were due for release. I feel as if the community's response to the Monocle did dampen the prospects of said corp owned bars and stores from coming out. |

I think it had more to do with, what do we want to have players define fun in stations.... it may have drawn a blank stare at the time and discated for something that need to be sat down and discussed later which is what would have happened if the protests wherent so loud. So that portion of instations has been pushed back, IMO for the better of WiS as well as it gives them time to hammer all the bugs out in the world while the content stews in the background. Then when its go time it should be a smooth lego together some patching and done.

Incarna is still a good idea, if you deliver the finished product.
What they promissed :
- Walking around stations
- In station mini-games
- Social areas such as bars, shops ect...
- Avatar interactions
- 4 CQ
What incarna actually delivered :
- 1 CQ, with just a couch to sit on and bugs allover the place.
Only one question remains in my mind : How could CCP expect incarna to be a succes? If you promise to give a house and end-up giving just a bathroom, what else can you expect?
Point being : Incarna was a big mistake, WiS is still a good idea. They should just deliver the complete WiS pack when it's ready. FiS should be the priority, but WiS should not be burried!
Don't encourage CCP to make empty promises or Incarna will happen again! |

Frankly, I see a lot of hate towards one thing being directed at other aspects of Incarna. Are people mad that WiS was happening? Or was it the Micro Transactions? I didn't like the micro transactions but I was looking forward to walking on the big promenade.
Edit: Do people not remember that the Minmitar CQ was just the first wave, and that they had more coming out. Except then the news letter got leaked. And then stuff didn't happen for a while. |

Keep in mind that we are talking about a project that was work in progress for years. They have been spending ressources on it since 2008. In 2011, we get 1 CQ with the "promise" that more will come later. And we all know that CCP arn't very good with promises.
So yeah, after 3 years of waiting, one buggy CQ is a very poor job in my book. Incarna was a big fail, make no mistake. That's why people complained. Let's just hope they give us a bit more of FiS untill they get WiS right next time.

I don't understand why CCP has such a massive 3D modelling lead time... I remember making levels for unreal tournament back in 2001 (in unreal editor) and could get a decent sized level out in about a day or 2...
is the carbon platform really that difficult to model stuff for? or is it just a case of... the coding and concept design is the most difficult part...
any thoughts? |
