CCP,
It's been 10 years, and your game is aging badly. Have you ever considered EVE 2.0?
Set up a kickstarter, or get some capital some other way, and rewrite your Frankenstein code from the bottom up. That's all - rewrite it, make it tighter, make it cleaner, make it easier to adjust in the future. Take advantage of new hardware technologies and build in room to take advantage of future upgrades. And make it more compatible with walking in stations :)
And ****, just this once, sell it as an expansion rather than giving it away. Between start up capital and sales, you could hopefully spend upwards of $20 million giving EVE a much needed facelift, that'll hopefully allow you to 1) fix longstanding problems 2) run everything smoother (less TiDi, more responsive game) 3) add new features and upgrades without making it sound like you need the Rosetta Stone to understand how to code it.

Old idea.
Basically, you don't do a ver 2.0 for something that is still in development.

This game isn't like other mmo level base games. Eve has a very hardcore backbone of players. Those ideas simply won't cut it. I've played for over ten years now and I love the game. It doesn't feel dated at all. It feels different and unique compared to other mmos. Eve is a much more complicated game then say sto or wow with their different realms and sessions. |

Interesting, but not directly applicable. Mostly because it does appear that the problems with EVE's code are architectural, and a ground-up rebuild would make a HUGE difference.
EVE was initially designed with a playerbase of approximately 100,00 players in mind (like 20k concurrent users), and was designed that way over a decade ago. It sure as **** isn't optimized for using any of the current generation of hardware.
They're already giving us "expansions" that add next to nothing of value - why not spend an expansion with no up front frills, just a lot of back-end work (that's what she said?).
Improve/eliminate the need for TiDi. Improve the ability to fix bugs on the fly, or add features that take forever to code nowadays (T3 reftting, anyone?) . . . . better UI, across the board, better handling of server queries; long story short, a more responsive game that is in a better position to grow in the next ten years, rather than reaching a stagnation point where adding a simple feature takes a whole team half an expansion cycle just because of crappy code. |

Sadly, it would not work, because of code being polished all the time, they made this frankenstein really cute for those 10 years. No point in reviving another one. |

Huge difficulty just allowing T3 ships to refit anywhere other than a station.

Walking in Captain's Quarters (much less stations) being a computational nightmare.

You seem to be entirely unaware of the Carbon initiative.
For the past few years, a huge amount of dev effort has gone into rewriting parts of the Eve code-base from the ground up in a modular fashion that can be used across all CCP products,
Just because you don't see splash screens and advertisements doesn't mean that "Eve 2.0" isn't happening.
As for a total, ground up rewrite of every single system in the game, you're looking at a good 5+ years of dev time, assuming every Eve dev stops working on the game and works exclusively on the rewrite. |

You must be new here.
Life before TiDi? just wow. Node Crashes? I haven't had one where I've been for a few years. T3 Issue: So? What in this Universe (RL) is perfect? SMA issue. So? low pri thing for me. If I want a pi+Ķata, I'd get a real one. Freighter Salvage issue: So? I'm sure its on a list to-do Incarna - Why are you using that? One Second ticks - Think about it.... UI - It used to be worse "Jump" right next to "Bridge".

Please? So in the 2+ years or so that they are off writing EVE 2.0, what do they do with this EVE. Does is just stagnate or do they shut it down? Also, since they'll be wiping all my progress, do I get any of it back in EVE 2.0? As for selling an expansion, they could do that, if they want to lose 90% of the player base. I run 8 accounts. You think I'm going to pay an extra 8 times over to play EVE? Doubtful. Many others are the same. |

TIL EVE playerbase is bad at reading comprehension and has reaaaaalllllyyy low expectations.
And comparing cleaning up the code to WOW is just flat out ******** . . .
But to the non-trolls (and the one helpful guy who talked about the Carbon thingie I did not know of) can you think of a better solution other than status-quo? Seems like an efficient rewrite would almost demand new capital, and I don't know how CCP could do that short of a re-release/paid expansion, kickstarter, or (shudder) heavily ramped up microtransactions (NO, please)

Ohai! I don't know the first thing about software, but you should totally rewrite everything "better" and slap a 2.0 on the label. I'm willing to pay upwards of $50! I'm totally sure this will allow you to fix everything.
You can have that done by next year right?

Uh, first I'll point out that EVE already is "stagnating," I guess- they've been rebalancing ships for a while now, and that's about it. But remember, it's a damn sandbox, so how much more dev content do you really want? How could the game "stagnate" any more than it already is? Less moon siphons?
Also, wiping what progress? You create, name, and populate a new planet when I wasn't looking? Yeah you keep your isk and assets.
Only legitimate concern would be your claim that you would quit if you needed to buy eight expansions. But I'll tell you a secret - anyone who is running eight characters in a damn video game is gonna have a hell of a hard time letting go. They've already got you through the sack and back again, muhboy.
Unless you're equating this to Incarna (which could admittedly apply). To avoid a mass exodus, CCP would have to make damn sure that they actually meet expectations, and clean up the code to reduce and eliminate all of my previous concerns, making a game that's far more responsive to change and can handle a lot more people in one place at one time.

It was nice of you to admit you don't know the first thing about software - hell, you probably even read the fun link some other poster left, explaining why Netscape Navigator (lol) back in 2000 (lol) was bad for rewriting the code for their free software (lol) that was competing with an effective near-monopoly at the time before . . . getting replaced by an upstart browser which was rewritten from the ground up. High Firefox!
I imagine it would take two years to complete an overhaul, with EVE continuing to run the whole time, so many additional assets would be needed to get it done. And while you might be poor, I bet a lot of people would pay (some of them even gladly) if it meant CCP was able to drag EVE into the 21st century.
