My advice would be this even if you want to mine, start off running agent missions first while you train some basic skills and make money. Due to some macro mining issues the "noob" ore that you mine sells VERY poorly now adays, and to mine the good value safe ore like omber and kernite ( both found in .06-.05 systems) you need some basic combat skills anyways to kill the NPC priates that spawn in the belts, but because of this you make more money running missions early than mining.
So run missions until you get soem basic combat and mining skills trained.
I'll let everyone else tell you the rest just had to give my 2 cents because early on money is hard to figure out how to get and you need some quick cash to get some basic upgrades and buy basic skills.
I also would suggest soon after reaching a reasonable level of operation to then train up your learning skills, they raise your stats which reduces the time everything takes to train, very important for the long haul in eve.

Have a REAL good look at your attributes before you decide to keep your new character for the next 5 years.
You will want your attributes relatively balanced with perc/intel 1-2 higher than memory/willpower and charisma 1-2 pts below.
Long term that will pay off with the ability to train new skills faster.
If your character has very high charisma/willpower/memory compared to the rest or perception/intel very low, you may want to create another character before its too late :)

I joined EVE because i heard i can do PVP here. The first time i undocked, I said 'ooooo so many targets to shoot'. Shot the first guy i saw. And poof goes my sec status and ship. That was so traumatic for me, it took me 8 months to shoot the next guy.
Welcome to EVE. You are gonna love it here.

It has been an exciting two days with Eve Online as I discover its subtle nuiances and amazing world. I have been completetly overwhelmed by the graphics, size and complexity of the game. Its the first MMO or I should say first game in some time that has captured my attention. You could say I've become jaded, but quite frankly in the last couple of years there has been very little that has impressed me in the PC gaming world as a whole.
Still more amazing then the game itself has been the response from the fans and player community here on Eve Online. The amazing advice in these forums and huge hug welcome reaches well into the game. I got no less then 4 people from this post alone that contact me in game, gave me great advice, spent a ton of time explaining the game to me and filled my bank account with virtual generosity. A big thanks to everyone, I think I got excatly what I needed out of this post (A good start) and I hope you guys keep up this ferocious devotion and enormous welcome to the players that come after me, I fully intend on using this post as a lesson on how to be part of an online community.
Thanks again everyone, see you online!!
