I've just started to record some adventures in EvE using Fraps. Now I've recorded a 16 minute video but of which the file size is 17GB (resolution is 1440x900), firstly is this a standard output file size for Fraps and secondly how can i go about reducing the filesize down to other videos I have seen that have better quality and are longer? |

Fraps do create some huge files. So it is a great idea to have either a large harddrive, multiple harddrives or an extra external one.
You can easily compress the filesizes. Either with video editing programs like sony vegas or programs specific for compressing and encoding videos (there is a program called Handbrake). Just bear in mind that if you want to edit stuff later then you will get the best results if you use the original file.
If you can afford it, then get a 1920x1080 monitor. It will be so much easier to work with videos at that format as it is the full HD format. My first pvp video: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=290563&find=unread

Thanks for the speedy response!
I've got a 500gb hard-drive and a monitor that can support 1920x1080, but assuming with that resolution the Fraps filesizes will be even bigger?
In compressing the filesizes does this affect the overall quality in relation to the original resolution (e.g. recorded in 1440x900, compressed it makes it look like 800x600)? I'm not savvy in the way of digital imagery.
The videos are more for personal reference when PVP'ing as i feel i can hopefully learn a lot in avoiding certain scenarios (like death! ) so unless i magically inherit a chunk of isk and instant PVP experience i don't think i'll be YouTube-ing them up soon. |

Compressing the files will not change the resolution. Infact you can easily compress fraps files without noticing any significant loss in quality.
So if you just wanna store the videos then record in 1920x1080 and then compress it. That can easly turn a 16min video into about a half GB despite still being full hd. My first pvp video: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=290563&find=unread

Yeah what I do is have fraps use that thing where it chops each file off at 4 GB
Then I load each of those into Adobe Premiere Elements 11, do edits if any, and then have it compile into an FLV I can upload to youtube.
In one case I made an MP4 and it was 2.36 GB and the whole thing was 26 minutes long, perfect quality.
Edit: I also use the default 29.97 FPS setting
Edit 2: Here's a result of some EVE recording, in FLV format it was 128 MB (and no I don't live in any of those system so dont try stalking me to get free cap kills hah) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn4_RVKzODQ The Drake is a Lie |
